Obviously i have no idea about yesterday's game but you had a 3 time senior grand final umpire who has 3 years VFL experience and an at least 6 time senior grand final umpire yesterday.
A question not about broadford v romsey game. When is a ball out of bounds?
If a ball clearly goes over the boundary while in the air, then lands back in the field of play, is it out or play on ?

It is out of bounds the second the entire ball crosses the line. Doesn't matter where the ball ends up.

Who makes the selections for the interleague? Looking at who have been selected, they were picked before they even played a game in the rdfl.

I don't follow your competition closely by any means, but it seem the same reoccurring names coming up year in year out. Surely if the competition is getting stronger as it has been stated in the previous 47 pages then the standard of player in this side must improve somewhat and some new faces must be put up for selection. What was the result from last year?

I remember reading something about a significant jump in ranking if you win? Is this correct? Surely you would be going with a some of the big recruits to the competition and making it as big as possible to put the competition even further back on the map?

Do respective coaches have input on their own players or is it opposition coaches putting names up?

All EDFL senior coaches make recommendations on both sides of the fence, which gives a true indication of current form and players ability at interleague level.

Can someone inform me as to how big sauce is going settling in at Broadford since departing the two blues? Has talent to offer and would be good for him to get a couple years senior level experience and try and wonder back home later in his career.

New to the league, any reason why Paul sahlberg didn't make interleague squad?

I spoke to one of the selectors on sat about interleague and he explained that they have a team of blokes watching many games each weekend. He told me they take into account last years form, this years form, performances of those that played in game last year, new recruits to league and they only name players in the squad if they are keen to play. M Power is head coach and I know he uses his contacts across league to gather individual commitment levels because i know one of the big names has already told him they're not interested. this is probably why some of the stars of the comp don't even get named inc p sahlberg.

The squad looks fantastic except I cant see Luke Smailes named in the squad ? Is he unavailable or not interested ?

Thanks for the response. Some leagues enforce a 2 week suspension if they are selected and fail to commit to interleague. Obviously there are exceptions to this i.e.; injury, however something like this should be looked at if you are missing big name players and putting together a mediocre side. The league should be proactive in putting such clauses together if they are serious on putting the competition back on the map.

The mighty argument came up that we need to pay more to get more quality umpires into the competition.. some may find it hard to believe but the RDFNL has one of the best umpires associations in Victoria.. this is reflected on the awards and recognition won by our coaching.. the outstanding numbers on the track which would even stun that of most clubs .. when you get more than 100 on the track at a training night and that isn't your full compliment of umpires that run out on the weekend, that really says something..
We have had a trememdous amount of numbers that have been recruited to the VFL Development Squad this year with a number going on to VFL and AFL duties at the same time .. we have the talented Jordie Andrews who is sitting on the sidelines from injury but will make his AFL debut this year after umpiring the TAC Grand final last year.. Billy Mitchell speaks for himself..
Obviously the problem at times is that with good coaching and encouragement, comes the possibility that umpires will move on to high levels.. which they have and will in record numbers. If we had every former and current RUA that is currently running around, somewhere, running around on Saturday.. the talent would be mind blowing.. ultimately when some go up (to higher leagues), it requires the great skill of our coaches to get the next batch coming through.. and while numbers are high, the RUA would take anyone that wants to have a run.. the more the merrier.. but like your Under 18s and Reserves, sometimes the numbers are not just there.. if people want to talk recruitment, well, it's been done in recent years.. we've had new coaches and new umpires who have umpired in other associations, come to us and doing an exceptional job.. I can think of four or five quality senior umpires in our competition that umpired Senior footy elsewhere before coming here .. and that isn't a money thing.. that's appreciating the quality of the league.. the players, the administration, the RUA.. environment and so on..
I'm proud and excited with the quality we have in this comp and think everyone should be too :)

If the league went this way it would need to be stipulated in the registration / contract for this league. Need to be a bit careful as it might discourage players from coming into the RDFL. I understand where your coming from but ex AFL/VFL players probably don't want to play.
I reckon these games should be for players 23 and younger who might be looking to get recognised or build up there playing resume..

Yep I agree Turbo. The days of trying to force players to play and threatening them with suspension are gone. How can you really police if a player is injured or sore anyway? Make them get a stat dec or a doctors certificate? Easily done if need be. Suspend them if they play the week before and after? Yeah sure the clubs would support that.
No I think the league has got it right. Only pick and play the fellas who genuinely want the honour of representing the league and the experience of playing with the best against the best.[/QUOTE]

It's a good discussion point for nearly all leagues. I haven't seen many games of RDFL but do keep a close eye on the league as I live in a surrounding area.
The league does appear to have got a lot stronger over recent years and getting recognise. But on this interleague subject I'm guessing a Philpot or Cuffe or even Clarke might prefer to have the weekend off and therefore I would look to give an opportunity to a younger ruckman to showcase his skills with the best players. Some ruckman can be affected in local footy by how good there mids are and if they have a second ruck so putting them in the rep side might see them be known.. Same goes for a quality mid etc..

Then let the young up and comers umpire SNR games not 50 year olds who can't throw the ball up or keep up with the game that's all where saying at some stage u aren't as good as you once where just a view many hold as they say at some stage ya gotta hang the boots up
There are many factors I'd imagine, where umpires get put to certain games at certain levels.. like with any coach.. football, netball, umpiring etc.. not every selection is going to please every person.. the coach needs to be backed to make the right decisions.. no-one can say that a football coach has picked the best 22 that will please every member in the club to take to the field on a particular day... and perhaps consider that the guys running around in the Reserves or 18s that could push for senior spots may not be ready to step up, lack form, have injuries, have other commitments, need to rebuild their confidence.. there could be many other reasons .. sometimes that experience at Senior level would be crucial.. I know I'd kill to have a run around with someone in the 18s who had 20 years plus of experience with Senior football under their belt ..

If there are over a hundred at training there must be 12 that can do SNR and a retired umpire not need to return
Any way it don't matter what we think where just paying the money

That 100 includes juniors, boundary and goal umpires. We have about 40 saturday field umpires and the guy you think should retire is clearly still in our best 14 that need to do senior footy each week.

The weekends game broadford vs romsey was a great game. I was really disappointed early that romsey didnt capitalize on their opportunities and put the game to bed. To broadfords credit they kept coming back and at 3 quater time looked a chance of winning.
However romsey went up a gear and kicked 4 goals in about 8 minutes and were looking like demolishing broadford. However we received a send off and it slowed the momentum.

The thing is, rather than bag the umpires, i thanked them 4 the day, had a beer with semmo and asked him why my player was sent off. His explanation was a laugh but at least i asked him, he explained it and we moved on. Its not hard to communicate with the umpires, however bigfooty isnt the way to go about it, especially when its to try and detract from the victors performance.

Well said Mongrel it was a good win by the Redbacks especially after losing Matt Burkett early in the game. Matt was dominating. Hope he gets back soon. As for the umpiring i thought it was fine, maybe sour-grapes from Keston.
