What a game at Boardman Reserve today...

Early in the first term it looked as though Lancefield were going to burn Riddell off the park, they were too quick and had Waters dominating around the ground. Chris Collins, Jay Shewan and Simon Choate racking up possession, the Bombers fought back toward the end of the quarter though, a long goal to Peatling ensuring that the Bombers were in touch.
The second quarter started much like the first, the Tigers seemed to have control of the game, much more of the football and the Bombers looked a little slow and having trouble coping with the Tigers run. A big quarter from Ruffell saw the Bombers having to switch Jason Allen to match up on the big forward. The Tigers over 5 goals in front and in complete control.
After half time the Bombers started to work thier way back into the game, the more experienced heads were starting to step up, but it looked as though they just couldn't eat into the Tigers lead. Dean Besanko, Leigh Coles, Cam McCabe and young Ben Sonogan were all working overtime as the Bombers cut the lead to 21 points at the final change.
The last quarter saw Ruffell kick the first of the quarter, many suggesting that was the end of the game, but 2 quick goals to the Bombers reduced the margin to 15. Ben Talbot replied after some smart play from Conway and another Tiger goal seemed to all but seal the game. But the Bombers kept on coming. In 8 minutes of brilliance, Cam McCabe turned the game on its head. Chris Meacham kicked his first for the day and Nick Ash, who was a surprising choice for full forward kicke another. McCabe then kicked 2 in a row and scores were suddenly level. Again, Coles and Besanko combined to clear the ball forward for the Bombers, before a loose ball out the back of the pack saw McCabe snap a point. The Tigers last roll of the dice was a turnover from the kick out and the Bombers pinched a one point victory. Without a doubt, Lancefield played the better football, but the Bombers just got the job done when it was needed the most to move into an intruiging match up against Romsey next week. For Lancefield, a match up against a full of confidence Diggers Rest at Woodend after such a disappointing low is a danger game.

Big week in the RDFL this week and I hope everyone enjoyed today..

3 - Cam McCabe (Riddell)
2 - Tom Waters (Lancefield)
1 - Brian Ruffell (Lancefield)

Completely agree, the same can be said about some of the talent on display this morning.. Both Woodend and Kilmore have some exceptionally talented youngsters.
What a great last 1/4 in the game today. Lancefield in front all day except when it matted most . McCabe saved his best for the last 1/4 and was sensational . :thumbsu:

be fair to say there have been some great games over the weekend, todays match must have been a cracker , what else could you ask for in a final , victory snatched in the last ten seconds of the game !

ventured out to melton yesterday to watch the macedon v diggers clash expecting a great contest instead walked away in shock and amasement.
great effort by diggers to peg back the cats who had all the play in the first half and went into the main break 4 goals up and full of run.
i was standing in amongst some life long loyal cats supporters and you couldnt wipe the smile of their faces, this is what they had been waiting for , for a long long time.
whilst they were keeping a lid on it you could sense that they knew that victory was only an hr away if the cats kept playing as they were.

once the siren sounded to start the third qrt thats is were it all went pair shaped.

diggers pounced on the hard ball and had all the luck go their way, first to the footy and were as tough as nails.
macedon look flat footed , tired and not interested, perhaps thinking that they had done enough in the first half to see them move to the next round?
given that they had played a rampaging burra side the week before and were very very lucky to hold on , you would have thought that they would,ve done their homework and learned from the previous week as the same thing was happening all over again.
diggers dropping men back a kick behind the play building a wall and pumping the ball back into their forward 50 as quick as macedon were getting it out.
the pressure was on the cats and it showed with turnovers and some poor skills leading to easy goals for diggers.
ben james obviously was no were near match fit struggling with a knee injury that limited his impact dramatically.

why would you have your best four players on the pine when you could see that diggers were coming and coming hard ?
i understand that they give some of their onballers a rest but when the heat is on that is generally when the cream of the crop rise to the occassion, never at any stage in the third qrt did any of the cats top line players fire a shot.
siren sounds to end the third diggers have out played the cats in every aspect and have got them selves a 8 pt buffer going into the last and also going into the last with all the momentum.
expecting to hear a passionate , inspirational plea/speech from the coach given what had just occured i walked away amazed and i wasnt alone in that thought.
not one sense of urgency in the huddle from anyone, blind freddy could have seen what was happening but for some reason coach lee didnt see it.
whispering to his players , are you for real ?
the side you have coached all yr is in danger of dropping straight out of the race for the flag and the best you can muster is a whisper?
what inspiration could any footballer get from being whispered to going into one of the toughest last qrts they could ever ask to play ?

the last started as the third ended diggers running all over macedon, lee had zero answers to hopkins and was completly out coached in every aspect of the game , hopkins was always one step ahead and this showed on the ground and the scoreboard.
even the supposedly ever inspiring captain christening from macedon had nothing , the only player out there try to rev up his mates was knight and he was fighting a losing battle heads started to drop and so did the chance to move into the nxt round of finals matches.
blade been great all year was terrible, fleming struggled after the main break, as mentioned earlier james was clearly struggling with a knee injury.
the skill level of macedon was poor to say the least wilton being a serial offender of turn overs and mis directed kicks, mills looked way out of his depth seemed to get pinged every time he went near the ball to slow with his decision making.
christenson had a clear case of the fumbles all day, hancock was the only shinning light down back but one man cant do the job of 6 can he ?
the forward line didnt exist after half time for a side to kick just two points in two qtrs of footy is disgusting, especially from a side who had showed so much all year long.

for a side to completly lay down like macedon did in a final was one of the saddest thing ive seen in footy, the players should be embarrassed, they should apologise to those die hard cats suporters who have weathered the storm of some extremely tough times down at macedon and stuck by them through and through. the look on some of those guys faces said it all they were shattered.
the coach should be told to pack his bags as clearly he hasnt got what it takes to lift his side when the heat is on.
all in all a very very dissappointing day for any macedon supporter, hopefully they learn from this
hope also the diggers guy who went off in that sickening clash in front of the clubrooms is ok as well.

good luck to the remaining teams in their quest to take home the cup and just remember finals are a funny game anything and i mean anything is possible!

yeah it was johnny ryan who went off, went and had some scans and he is fine, got a beut shiner though...he towelled fleming all day up until that moment.

I also hope that this week, with the best umpires doing the finals games that in all grades we have a return in protecting the player with his head over the football.. Lets remember that the person initiating the contact has the duty of care.... :thumbsu:

Lets hope next weekend that the umpires turn up. They definitely didn't show up for the Woodend, Romsey game. 2 imposter's trying to impersonate an umpire filled in.:eek::eek::eek::eek::eek:

Bravo today to the Burra, played an inspired 2nd half.. The 2 slick forwards in Laurie and McCabe proved too hard for the Cats to contain. Losing Sims in the first half would have made things tough, but the Burra well and truly stepped up. Steve Ruane was great all day, while Bev Green and John Ryan did the shut down job on Aaron Christianson and Ash Fleming until John came off after a sickening clash. The second half proved that the Burra did have the wood over the Cats, Darren Goodwin and Hancock were the standouts for Macedon.

Votes for the game IMO

3 - Steve Ruane (DR)
2 - Cole Laurie (DR)
1 - Darren Goodwin (Mac)

Standout's for the cat's ? was I at the same game ?

Too just kick 2 pts in a half of football ?

Cats kicking with a 4 goal wind in the last qrt ?

16 scoreing shots too two ? ( second half )

Must have been a big piece of wood

As a side note to yesterday's game, I would like to give a big polish to the umpires in the senior game. Especially Semmo.. Well balanced, well controlled game of football, there was no over officiating, especially when the game got tight.. Excellent performance..

Bowen medal night tonight, cant wait for it...

Most of the attention from my point of view will be to see if the Cuffe double can get up.. I wouldn't have thought there would be many times that a father and son combo have won the league best and fairest in 2 grades before, tonight there is every possibility that could occur, will be a big night on the Kangas table I would think (as it always is) :D

If that was a game where they didnt over officiate, i'd hate to see one where they did!!
Agree with the balance of decisions, was fairly even but just let the game go a bit!!

I heard on the grapevine that Fitzy has changed training for tomorrow night. Instead of normal training, all the boys will be out doing a rain dance! :D

thats a fair summary gav, considering the amount of jim beam cans you were putting away.and the amount of noise coming from the drunks u were standing with.lol. i do agree tho ruane was outstanding all day. his sweeping across half back with perfect reading of the play, and also his disposal was superb.however you forgot to mention a couple of things.firstly the best on ground award should have gone to glenn hopkins.his clear, precise instructions were right on the mark and his players responded exactly to his instructions.secondly i watched macedons finals game last year and commented then that they seemed happy just to make the finals, rather than have a crack at doing something in it.and this year, barring the first quater, once again their intensity and lack of leadership was far from what is required to win finals games.on the positive side however the cats have a very young side with many years of finals ahead of them.
also congrats to aaron blade on winning the bowen medal.and well done to jamie cuffe 4 an outstanding season finishing one vote away.

News just in, that should make some people happy.

Due to unforeseen circumstances, out of control of Woodend/Hesket FNC and the RDFL, the RDFL senior finals fixtures for this Saturday, September 5th 2009 have been amended as follows:

- All matches, which were fixtured to be played at Woodend’s Gilbert Gordon Reserve have been moved to Riddells Creek Reserve.

All fixture times and matches, as well as instructions distributed earlier this week, will remain the same. The only change is the change of venue.

Well done to Riddell FNC as they have offered their venue for Woodend/Hesket FNC to use, as they will still be hosting the event.

bit quiet on here today
some sore heads perhaps from last night ?

congratulations to aaron blade and all other medal winners, would name you but dont no any other names !!

I would like to say that the Riddell and Lancefield game was and absolute cracker and a well hard fought win by Riddell in the end and unfortunate to Lancefield, all forms of umpiring were really good and a good turn out as well.
