Saw great game of footy at macedon on satdy. Both teams looked the real deal. Macedon had most of footy but lancefield much more efficient up forward. Tim Detman was best on by a mile. The big rig looked very good in first half but then injured his right leg and couldnt run much, irwin also went back onto him and did good job. Waters dominated ruck but kicking around ground was poor. Dorman was pretty quiet most of day but kicked some special goals in last quarter. More injuries to cats though will make it tough versus riddell this week. Blade broke hand in 2nd quarter and will miss a couple and the big rig is also out until romsey game i hear. With fleming, james and wright already out for extended periods the cats have a tough month ahead. The tiges will bounce back aginst diggers this week.

Great game and agreed Dettman was clearly BOG, although I doubt he will get votes for it. In a conversation I had with an umpire after the game quote from umpire "Gee it was hard to pick best players today" reply from me "You would have noticed number 10 clearly bog must have had it atleast 35 times" reponse "Oh yer but i did notice him make a mistake that cost them a goal, and i kept getting him and number 11 mixed up" -11 spent almost the entire 2nd half on the bench. I dont normally bag the umps because I have given it a crack and its a tough job but these blokes did not have a clue who the best players where. Dont know enough about the league and winners of the medal to comment if they are worthy but based on the conversation these guys should not be voting. Hope the other umps have better judgement otherwise you might as well call it bowenlotto.

8 rounds to go and a couple of big games this weekend....can't wait!

The woodsmen are hosting Broadford this weekend and this is a game that Woodend can not afford to let slip. I agree with IMS that the 2nd roos will be tough to deal with in the last 8 weeks and sides can not underestimate them. In saying that though, Woodend should be too strong at home. A loss here would be near fatal considering the run home they have. Woodend - 21 points

Disappointing to hear that Wheels is out for the rest of the season. It has not been a great year for Melton, but they do have a chance against Wallan. Neither of these sides wants to finish on the bottom and it should make for a good game. Wallan have put in some good games at home this year, and I am going to tip them on that advantage. Wallan - 25 points

Saw Rockbank last week and while there is improvement, they are still a fair way off. Sunbury - 60 points

Kilmore are going to have good 8 weeks of shaping the 6. They do have 4 winnable games and an upset against Romsey or Sunbury could go a long way to kick starting next season. Romsey at home though should prove to strong. Like Woodend, they can not afford to drop this as there last 6 games are going to be very tough. Romsey - 33 points

BIG GAME 1 - Lancefield Vs Diggers Rest. 3rd vs. 4th, this is going to be HUGE. Can an under manned burra do it again and knock off a team sitting above them? They have won 7 on the trot now and are definitely one of the form teams of the comp. They do have a tough draw home but guys like Shane Marchewka, Brad Sluggett and Mick Kilty have really stepped up over the last couple of weeks and when Sims, Ruane & Clarke come back should have a good run into September. The Tigers will be seething after last week and I think that diggers will struggle to match up on the quality talls that Lancefield have. I keep doing it but I am going to tip against the burra. Lancefield - 10 points

BIG GAME 2 - Riddell Vs Macedon. 1st vs. 2nd. This is the start of a big 3 weeks for Riddell, they have 2nd, 3rd and 4th all in 3 weeks. This will show us exactly where they are. It is too bad that the cats will not have TBR, it would have been great to see a good old fashioned shoot out between him and Meacham. The cats at near full strength would be worth a big thought, they seem to get themselves up for the big games. But with the quality players they have out I can't see them getting over Riddell. Riddell - 17 points.

Good luck to everyone.

i did not go and watch the game but i heard it from your senior coach that lancefield were disapointing as i was with him at a party on saturday night

Yes mate, disappointing is probably a fair assessment, but you stated we had the game in the bag and let it slip. Neither team on the day had the game in the bag until the siren sounded, I can assure you.

Having said all that, we were down on our best performance and missed by a kick against a quality side, so there's positives to come from it. Add Chris Collins to the midfield will be a bonus as well.

my tips for the week

woodend to beat broadford in close game but expect broadford to come hard.

wallan to beat melton centrals in a close game.

sunbury to beat rockbank

diggers rest over lancefield . lancefield were dissapointing last week they had the game in the bag and they let it slip

riddell to defeat macendon riddell have very good form and will win pretty easy

romsey easy over kilmore no stopping the gaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaazzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzaaaaaaaaa show:thumbsu:

you obviously werent there last week lancefield macedon clash was one of the best games i have witnessed this year.
i have sat and watched some ordinary bendigo fl games and also have watched some painfull ballarat fl games and saturdays match between lancefield and macedon was by far the best game ive seen for a long time.
lancefield were never in front at any stage but were always within a kick of macedon, great match by two teams going very very hard at it.
if you can find one lancefield or macedon supporter who says that this game didnt have it all then i would be very very suprised indeed

You & me both pal, you & me both !

What was I thinking !

He's none other than The Big Rig. Calling him by his actual name would be an insult.
physically he isnt that big its the size of the crotch cobra that earned him the big rig name.
should be a good contest at riddell this saturday, but with macedon missing a few very handy players i think the bombers will come out with the points, having said that macedon will get a great account of were there at coming up against the best side in the comp of the last 4 years

Re: Mid Season Review

In the past I have copped it when writing about my own side... I agree, the draw will play a role in where sides may or may not finish, I think that any side from 2nd to 7th can make the finals or miss out.. I am confident in my sides form and ability to make this years final series, in fact, I believe that they may even finish as high as 4th.. But just my opinion... :thumbsu:

How many burbons to have your own side. :p

I had a look at the draw this week and noticed that Woodend don't play a home game in the last four rounds . Is this to get the ground up to scratch for finals ? If this is the case when was that decision made that they would be getting a final, and when to the League announce other venues.

I've been saying this for five years, Woodend's ground should NEVER host a final.

There are four, and I repeat, four grounds in the RDFL senior competition which are suitable for September action.

1. Lancefield - Big, wide open ground with lots of parking, good facilities and function area.

2. Macedon - Same as Lancefield, except for parking.

3. Romsey - Only problem is visitors changerooms, although that shouldn't be a problem from 2010 onwards.

4. Riddell - Not as good as the above three, but has a fair playing surface and is centrally located.

These four venues should be used exclusively in the RDFL finals series. I don't care if Macedon gets the GF, Lancefield has the prelim and all four share the opening two weeks of finals, but the likes of Kilmore and Woodend don't deserve the opportunity.

Kilmore's ground is played on the side of a mountain, and if you're kicking to the southern end in the last quarter, you're very much up against it. Meanwhile, nine times out of ten, assuming we've had some rain in the lead up six months, Woodend's ground will always be a quagmire.

I didn't mind the double-header at Melton last season, but the second ground is shithouse, and there's a reason they considered filming the movie Twister at MacPherson Park - its so fuking windy.

spot on there nicholls , would loveto see the grand final at macedon , perhaps the interleague game was a trial run for those at HQ to see if all would go well ?
add diggers ground to a ground never to host a final , disgustingly windy there and you cant see the score board from the other side

I played in a couple of junior grand finals at Diggers Rest, very bad memories.

Riddell flogged Cats today in cold wet day at riddell. was close till 3rd quarter where they piles on about 7 goals to none. mccabe all class, meacham should have kicked 10 and whittard very good through middle. For cats the only one to fire was the bulldozer Goodwin, shit he must be hard to tackle.
Riddell clearly better team at this stage but cats had a heap out and will struggle for a few weeks until their return.
Any other results?

Matt you no 3/5ths of nothing about grounds in the RDFL im sorry but your opinion does not count in these matters or anything else to do with this league why should these clubs get all the finals and other clubs miss out on the money i agree Lancefield GF always if other clubs put there names up for a final they should be given a chance

Which grounds deserve finals then?

Lets go through them

Broadford - ground is too small for top class finals footy.

Kilmore - ground has a giant slope and kicking goals towards the southern end in the last quarter is too much of a disadvantage. A lot of emphasis on the coin toss.

Wallan - surface simply not up to scratch at the moment. Very windy after they cut those pines all those years ago. Has potential in the future though with an upgrade though.

Woodend - Quagmire.

Sunbury Kangaroos - Ground is starting to come good, but very easy to sneak into. Need a shit load of volunteers to make sure people don't skimp the gate fee.

Diggers Rest - Pretty much no fencing to keep people from sneaking in, and the wind is absolutely sheisenhausen.

Melton Cental - Centrals' ground is too small for good senior finals footy, and the Bloods' ground is awfully windy and not good for viewing.

Rockbank - It's Rockbank.
