Round 15

With only 4 rounds to go, the RDFL race for finals positions is well and truly on, this week kicks off a couple of massive contests in the context of the final ladder over the remaining rounds, many of our questions will be answered!!

Wallan (6th, 5-9) Vs Romsey (1st, 14-0)
Last Time:
Rd 4 - Romsey 20.20.140 def Wallan 10.6.66
Prediction: Romsey win.

Macedon (5th, 10-4) Vs Melton Centrals (9th, 4-10)
Last Time:
Rd 4 -Melton Central 4.9.33 lost to Macedon 18.9.117
The Cats continued their recent run of solid form last week with a 29 point win over Wallan. All year they have gotten the job done against the sides below them on the ladder and will look to continue the trend this week against Centrals. Aaron Christianson led the way last week with 4 goals, while Jae Wilton continued his run of good form and is one of the premier mobile talls in the competition. The Cats strength is the talls across the park, Ash Fleming, Al Meldrum, Daniel Sandle, Pete Markworth, Mark Strickland and Wilton all provide excellent targets across the ground, but James Wright has been missing for a while now and the Cats would be hopeful that he can get back on the park sooner rather than later. After this game the Cats finish the season with Woodend, Romsey and Sunbury, so a big win here is crucial in positioning themselves for a finals campaign.
Centrals finals hopes were dealt a big blow last week when they were outplayed by the Hawks. With games against Rockbank, Sunbury and Broadford to come and a poor percentage, they will likely need to win against either the Cats or Sunbury as well as the other two, to make it. With the injuries they have suffered this could be a big ask, but they will certainly throw everything they have at the Cats, they are led well by Kane Bullen, while Brett Payne is an excellent target up forward. Travelling to Macedon for a win is going to be a big ask though.
How Macedon will win:
Run and carry, when they are able to break the game open with pace, the smaller brigade use the footy really well, once the game is open, the key forwards have much more opportunity.
How Centrals will win:
Make it contested. Centrals have bigger harder bodies, they will need a game of stoppages so that they can physically impact their Cats opponents. On Tony Clarke, that might be tough, but what do they have to lose?
Prediction: Macedon by 40 points.

Lancefield (12th, 0-14) Vs Woodend/Hesket (7th, 5-9)
Last Time:
Rd 4 - Woodend/Hesket 20.14.134 def Lancefield 11.8.74
The Tigers have 4 more games to pick up that elusive first win and they have opportunity in 3 of those, if they haven't given up on the season. Credit needs to go to the young guys that have stepped up and played 2 games each week to ensure that the Tigers are competitive, but they need to keep giving for 4 more weeks, starting this week. They have had a tough tough year the Tigers, but there is light at the end of the tunnel, they still have some talented names in the lineup and they just need to hit every game believing they can win.
When it comes to young talent, the Hawks lead the way, they have several youngsters that step up each week from the Under 18 side, as well as several young players that have come through in recent years. Their Captain is as brave as they come and he was an inspired selection from the coaching staff. The Hawks have plenty of forward options and can break the game open in the blink of an eye if they are allowed the space. This is a big game for the Hawks, with Wallan facing Romsey, a big win here will put them a game clear in 6th and a healthy whack of percentage. But if they underrate the Tigers, they could end up paying a hefty price.
How the Tigers will win:
Controlling the ball, on their home ground they have plenty of space and if they control the ball and control the tempo of the game to suit them, then they may just be a show.
How the Hawks will win:
Electrifying. The Hawks small forwards along with Ross Waters can turn the game in the blink of an eye, they know where the goals are and can bang on 4 or 5 in quick succession, that will put an end to the contest.
Prediction: Woodend/Hesket by 65 points.

Kilmore (10th, 4-10) Vs Broadford (11th, 4-10)
Last Time:
Rd 4 - Broadford 9.10.64 lost to Kilmore 18.8.116
A loss here for either side puts paid to any faint hope they may have of playing finals football. The Blues have just come off a couple of very tough games and will be looking to make a statement in what is a rivalry game. In recent weeks, Shane Jacobs, Alex Desmond and Brent Gordon have all been in good touch, but the Blues need a more even spread across the ground in games to ensure they not only remain competitive, but are dangerous, and that is where the Blues are at, they are dangerous, they certainly have the talent that opposition sides need to be wary of, but this season have seemed to struggle to show all of that talent each and every week. They face Diggers, Lancefield and Woodend in the weeks following this game, so could if all things go their way, finish on 7 wins, putting them in the mix for 6th spot, and a surprise against Diggers and they finish the season with 4 wins and a spot in the finals.
Broadford have had an up and down season. I wont hide the fact that I thought they were very disappointing last week. It took 3 quarters before they settled and started playing the football that they were capable of, before that they were ill disciplined, 2nd to the ball and at times disinterested. The Broadford faithful will be hoping they can bounce back in the big game against the Blues this week and I am sure that they can, at times they can produce a fantastic brand of football that will trouble many sides.
How Kilmore will win:
The guns, if Kilmore's best players fire, they will win the game, too much is left to this group which includes a young 18 year old by the name of Alex Desmond who will no doubt be a star. If the players outside of this group perform on the weekend, they wont lose the game.
How Broadford will win:
Hard, attacking football. When the Roos attack the ball hard they are a far superior side than if they are trying to attack the man. No doubt early on they wanted to take it up to Romsey, but they forgot the fundamental reason you play the game, get the ball.
Prediction: Kilmore by 17 points

Rockbank (8th, 4-10) Vs Riddell (3rd, 11-3)
Last Time:
Rd 4 - Riddell 15.12.102 def Rockbank 8.8.56
The Bombers are flying and every week stake their claim as a rightful premiership contender. Even with Mick Allen having a quiet week last week against the Blues, they still managed to boot 24 goals, with Matt Baird having his best game of the year so far and another small forward in Mick Sammut booting 4. The Bombers are peaking at the right time of the year and sending a message to the rest of the competition. They are the reigning premiers and deserve to be rated with the other premiership contenders if not ahead. The Bombers midfield has stepped up a notch in recent weeks, Peter Robertson, James Climas and Cam Casson in excellent form, while Grant Puxley has added another touch of class to the backline.
The Rams were belted last week, they lacked competitiveness against Sunbury and really need to respond this week. A spot in the finals is still there for the taking, but it is only wins that is going to see them there. With games against Centrals, Diggers and Lancefield after this one, they are another side that is going to need to pinch a win against a side above them to stake their claim for that 6th position. If expected, they have 2 wins, it means they will finish the season on 6 wins, it won't be enough to make the 6, so they need to strike and need to strike now, so this week is a huge game for the Rams.
How Riddell will win:
Options, they have too many for the Rams to shut down, Allen, Baird, Sammut, Elliot, Ruffell, its a list that would make any backline nervous and with the form that the midfield and half back line is in, they are getting plenty of opportunity.
How Rockbank will win:
Win the midfield, to stop the Bombers forward line the Rams need to ensure that the supply going forward is limited and under pressure, if the Bombers mids are given space to work in, it is going to be a very long day for the Rams.
Prediction: Riddell by 35 points.

Match of the Round
Sunbury Kangaroos (2nd, 12-2) Vs Diggers Rest (4th, 11-3)
Last Time:
Rd 4 - Diggers Rest 13.10.88 def Sunbury 5.6.36
This game marks the 25 year reunion and anniversary of the Sunbury Kangaroos to be held at Boardman Reserve and will be a great day for anyone who has been a part of the club since it's inception.
The Kangaroos are in great form, another big win last week against the Rams and another bag for Full Forward Chris Meacham who is in superb touch at the right time of the year. The Roos will be looking for redemption after the game earlier in the year marked their first loss of the season, the suspension and forced retirement of Aaron James and the career ending injury to coach Mongrel. The Roos were disappointed with that game as they had no answers for the Burra and many key players were down on the day. This time around will be far different as key players Dermott Smythe, Jake Powell, Matt Welsh and Ryan Hatty are in excellent form, while the forwards are scoring heavily.
The Burra will go into this game full of confidence, in recent match up's between the two, the Burra have had the edge, including the tough and hard Preliminary Final match up. Despite the fact that they continue to win, the Burra have found the going much tougher so far in the 2nd half of the season, although a big win against the Tigers last week would have them feeling refreshed and back on track. The key to the Burra continue's to be their versatility, Dan McCabe and Brett Caton booted 10 between them last week, but Caton is likely to start back on Meacham this week. Craig Marshall, Brad Sluggett and Jeff Heritage continued their recent run of good form, while Shaun Sims continues to deliver week in week out.
Why the Kangaroos will win:
Talls, the Roos have many targets at their disposal, many of these targets will be tough for the Burra to match up on. Kris Marsh may be forced to play more of a stopping role eliminating his drive. If the Roos can use the big guys in Cuffe, Meacham, Fishenden and Baker, they could be hard to shut down.
Why the Burra will win:
Contested footy, if the Burra can grind the Kangaroos down as they have in recent match ups, the Roos might find it tougher to get one on one contests for the bigger guys, this is where the Burra come into their own, being able to peel off and support each other around the ground. If they are able to get numbers to the contest, they will make it tough for the Kangaroos to find free and open football.
Prediction: Sunbury by 5 points.

Good luck to all playing this week, looking forward to a great round of RDFL football.... :thumbsu:

Well... What a weekend of footy it was!!!

From the Wallan and Romsey game, some observations...

Despite the fact that there may be some discussion points that will distract from the game, I will stick to the things that matter and are worth talking about!!

First of all, the performance of Wallan, the Magpies threw everything at the Redbacks on the weekend and deserve a heap of credit for the way they played. Matt Robertson was superb in the midfield, Dave Cornish was back to his best up forward and "Here Here" was superb in the back half of the ground, the Magpies played with a passion and were right in the game, their performance showed that if they can finish in 6th spot, they are certainly not going to be easy beats in the finals series.

Want to give a massive amount of credit to the discipline shown by the Redbacks players, in the face of adversity, every player put their head down and worked through the time of difficulty, this was the test that this group had to face and they came through with flying colors, if you bunch of young guys can show that sort of discipline for the remainder of the year, every single person involved at Romsey would be very proud to be associated with this group.. A big thumbs up boys... :thumbsu:

To Ron, in only his second senior game as a field umpire, showed the maturity of a 300 gamer, when the heat was well and truly on and things had been forcibly turned willing, the umpire with 1 game experience had a cool head and remained focused and in control, an excellent performance and a perfect example of how a game should be umpired.. Well done... :thumbsu:

Well put mate, everything you have stated was spot on! The Wallan FC can be very proud of their sponsors day and the effort which was displayed on the ground, no spite in the game, just played under very difficult conditions, Ron has a huge future in the game and i look forward to him umpiring our next game whenever that maybe, both clubs should be congratulated.

Think he just said what everyone was thinking after they read the article. Good team Romsey but known to stumble in big finals. The reference to Black Caviar was one im sure the coach regrets in hindsight.

Well if that is the way you read it you read it very wrong.. The coach was asked if Romsey "had to lose a game" before finals, he simply responded that he didn't buy into that theory, and then made the reference that Black Caviar never lost a race. The only reference made being that Romsey don't "have" to lose a game in order to win the premiership.

Re: RDFL - Round 4

I always look forward to your reviews but you seem to be doing more and more guesswork. You keep talking up the hawks as a top 6 chance, unfortunately they will be lucky to win 6 games this year. ?

Still waiting on your comments about this one too

6 Woodend Hesket 15 6 9 0 0 0 1053 1309 80.44 24
The Hawks have nailed the "6" wins and a still very much a top 6 chance...

Black Caviar is a freak, no doubt. But Moody picks and chooses her races - the majority at weight for age level - making sure the handicapper can't get a hold of her. Romsey can't pick its opponents. I don't subscribe to "having to lose one" either, but I did raise my eyebrows slightly when I saw Peddo's comments last week. I'm sure he wasn't being overconfident but it just didn't read all that well.

It seems everyone read it a lot differently to me.. It was a reference in response to a "have to lose a game" question only... But anyways...

Only natural that you "WOULD" read the boss's comments through rose colored glasses pal !..............It could be worse though mate..... people could have read it as just plain Romsey arrogance ???

Heard that Jamie Zerafa from Rockbank received a 14 week suspension last night for kicking!!!

One of the MOST despicable acts in football, kicking ! I couldn't believe what I was seeing when I witnessed this incident.
Young lad couldn't remember a thing at 3 quarter time, & had a massive red lump just above his eye & temple..........Guilty player deserves every one of the 14 weeks he got ! :thumbsu:
