2nd Elimination Final - Sunday 2nd September @ Romsey

c8c32aae4c.jpg

Romsey - 3rd Position, 14 wins - 4 losses.
Melton Centrals - 6th Position, 9 wins - 8 losses - 1 Draw.

Last Time: Romsey 4.4.28 def by Melton Centrals 6.10.46

We only have to go back 2 weeks for when these two sides faced each other, and in that contest, it was Centrals getting the upset win and locking in a finals spot. That day of course was the day of the great RDFL floods and Centrals handles the conditions far better than the Redbacks who were without a host of stars. The Redbacks will this week welcome back a host of stars that have missed the last couple of games, while Centrals will go in full of confidence from the win 2 weeks ago as well as last week's come back where they rattled home to fall just short of the Cats.

Romsey - The Redbacks premiership defense has been an interesting one, they dropped the first game of the season to Riddell in a game they probably should have won, before going on a long winning streak which included an inspiring come from behind win against Sunbury and a demolition of ladder leader Diggers Rest. Then the Redbacks season hit a brick wall in the form of our wet winter, they seemed to struggle in the slippery and muddy conditions, a big loss to Riddell was followed by a tough loss to the Kangaroos and the dropped game to Centrals, but after all of that, the Redbacks managed to finish the season in 3rd position, a spot widely considered as the plumb place to finish.
Postive: The return of several stars into the line up will provide a massive boost to the confidence at Romsey Park, with a full list to pick from, it will be a very different Romsey side that runs out this week than the previous few weeks.
Negative: Performances in the wet have been below par, the Redbacks will need to respond if it rains all weekend and face a tough opponent who have big bodies and like a contested game style. Will also need to control their discipline if the game gets tight.
Key: The Redbacks list is chock full of talent, on every line they have star players capable of turning a game on it's head, these type of players live for finals football, it is where they perform at their best and where they will have their biggest impact of the season. The Redbacks need to manufacture some space on their home ground for Matt Davidson to work in, several times this year he has been forced to contend with extra opponents when teammates bring their direct opponents inside the forward 50, if the Redbacks can isolate each contest up forward then each of those contests will be tough to shut down one on one. The midfield need to carry and spread the ball to provide opportunities, at times the Redbacks midfield can blaze forward, and the backline needs to regenerate the run they had in the earlier parts of the year.
Wildcard: Mitch Farmer - Coming off a two week suspension will run into this game nice and fresh. His use of the ball is unmatched in the competition, the Redbacks in and under workers just need to do what they can to work the ball to the outside and give him space, if he has the ball in space 10 times going inside 50, the Redbacks will get 8 or 9 set shots.

Melton Centrals - What a fantastic year from Centrals and their first year coach Brian Wheelahan, they had a brilliant start to the year, disposing easily of the Tigers and Kilmore before having a run of terrible results that looked to have them on the back foot and out of the race for finals, but to the credit of the entire side, they were able to do what Centrals sides before them, had been unable to do, they worked through it and stayed positive, a draw against Macedon started to turn the tide and by the time they defeated Romsey in Round 17, Centrals were playing finals for the first time in a very long time.
Postive: The list is playing with confidence, and most importantly, they have identified the individual roles within the team and carry them out. The players have bought into Wheelahan's game style and are executing it well, the disappointing loss in the final round shouldn't dent the confidence too much as they were able to rattle home after a disappointing start to the contest.
Negative: Depth within the team might be tested now that we hit finals, it's a completely different level of football that needs to be displayed this week. A fantastic season to date will be all for nothing come the first bounce on Sunday, they have to be able to lift that output to another level again and it will be interesting to see how they respond.
Key: Making it a contest all over the ground, if the Redbacks are able to find their best players and ball users in space, they will hurt Centrals and hurt them badly, if Centrals are able to shut down and make the game stoppage after stoppage, they could be right in the contest. Around stoppages this year, Centrals have been fantastic, if they can create the stoppages and break from there, they have a forward line capable of scoring, they just have to avoid clear losses in the contest across the ground, if they continually create 50/50 contests it will frustrate the Redbacks into errors and give Centrals opportunity to score on the counter.
Wildcard: Jono O'Brien - Can play anywhere and in any role, this young Centrals utility just gets better every year he plays, has an enormous leap, so can ruck, but it is his ability to push to contests around the ground that give him the edge, if he is able to get around the ground to contests, then the Centrals forwards will get opportunities.

Prediction: It was only 2 weeks ago that Centrals knocked the Redbacks over, but the task will be far tougher here, Romsey will run out with a far different side to last time and will be eager to atone for that loss on their home paddock, on the flip side, if the Redbacks take Centrals lightly in any way, they will be in for a massive surprise. This list busted their butt to get to this final and are not going to go away without a fight, the Centrals line up will be well and truly up for this contest and they will push the Redbacks. Expect a close one until half way through the 3rd, where the Redbacks gain control and get the win.
Romsey by 30 points.

Qualifying Final - Saturday 1st September @ Kilmore

Diggers Rest - 1st Position, 16 wins - 2 losses.
Sunbury Kangaroos - 2nd Position, 15 wins - 3 losses

Last Time: Diggers Rest 10.13.73 lost to Sunbury Kangaroos 12.4.76

Don't pay too much attention to the game on the weekend, it was a fantastic game, but both sides were holding back. The game earlier in the year was a cracker with Brent Tuckey putting on a last quarter display. This game promises plenty, the last time these two sides faced each other at Kilmore there were plenty of fireworks, this game promises just as much.

Diggers Rest - What a season for the Burra. From week 1, they have proven that they would be the team to beat with a massive win against Macedon, they followed that up with a powerful display against Riddell in Round 2. The Burra have only dropped 2 games for the season, one against the Redbacks, where they were completely outplayed, but were without both Tuckey and former Bowen Medallist Steve Ruane. It took until the dead rubber Round 18 match against the Kangaroos for them to drop their second. The Burra have been superb all year, led brilliantly again by Shaun Sims who would be enjoying a year where not everything has rested on his shoulders. Craig Marshall and Cam Woods have been outstanding in the middle of the ground, while their forward set up has worked very well, Tuckey has been outstanding and Cole Laurie and Ruane provide alternate options.
Postive: The whole season the Burra have been waiting for this time of the year, leading the way all season, this is what the season is about. The Burra have the best spread from a stoppage or turnover in the league. They have an ability to shut down an opposition when they get momentum and then take control with spread using Jeff Heritage through the middle of the ground. Kris Marsh has had an exceptional year across the half back line and last line as the plus one defender, while Brett Caton has been back to the form he showed in the Lancefield Premiership year.
Negative: At times, the Burra find it difficult to score heavily, it can be the downfall that when they are controlling a contest, they are not putting enough space on the opposition on the scoreboard, this was again the case last week, where they dominated general play in the first half, but didn't score heavily enough to put the Kangaroos on the back foot, the Roos were always within striking distance.
Key: Without doubt it is the spread from the stoppage or turnover, the back half provide run, which allows the midfield to have several targets coming from behind the ball, the ability to spread opens up the forward 50 for the forwards to get one on one contests, especially Tuckey, who relishes the one on one contest and is rarely beaten. If the Burra can get on top out of the middle of the ground, they will control the run of the game. The Kangaroos have a big ruckman, and last week, they got on top of the Burra in the middle.
Wildcard: Shaun Sims - The skipper has gone about his business so far this year without a great deal of fanfare, but he is made for big games and is a real danger for the Kangaroos this week. The ability to win the ball through the stoppages and around the ground is important, but if and when it comes to scoreboard impact this week, don't be surprised to see Sims push deep forward to put his stamp on the contest.

Sunbury Kangaroos - The Roos have had a consistent year right across the board, much like their player list. In their losses this year, they have all come by small margins and all 3 from games where they were in front at 3 quarter time. This might have been a concern 6 weeks ago, but they have been able to rectify this situation in a couple of tight ones, namely against Woodend/Hesket, Romsey and last week against the Burra. The Kangaroos would have to be quietly confident with where they are positioned coming into this weeks game, especially with the results over the past month.
Postive: The senior side is so well balanced across the field, they have worked out where their players play their best football and released them to do exactly that. The back 6 work well together, the midfield, despite being the youngest group in the finals series, have played a lot of football together and know what their role is and are willing to sacrifice to ensure that the "team" has the best advantage and the forward line knows how to isolate in key times of the contest allowing one on one contests and variety in attack.
Negative: Despite the push back, the discipline issue still exists, though it lays dormant now, against the Redbacks a couple of weeks ago, the Kangaroos were fantastic with their discipline and again last week, when the game was in the balance, the Roos were fantastic. So hopefully they can carry that through for 4 more weeks.
Key: The Kangaroos are at their best when they play the game on their terms, dictate the pace of the game, the advantage they have is that they can do that in two ways, by taking the game on and taking it to their opponents or maintaining possession and building an attack, they will chip and control the ball at times and Diggers Rest will look at exposing that part of the game, the danger in that for the Burra is if the Roos get a break, they will flip their style and attack, putting scoreboard pressure on and putting it on quickly. The Roos just have to identify when to flip between the styles a little quicker, at some stages they can miss opportunity to flick the switch and sometimes take a little too long to go into maintaining possession.
Wildcard: Leigh Fishenden - The big fella can have an impact on the contest that can put an opposition on the back foot in the blink of an eye, is an outstanding tap ruckman, but also has the ability to kick goals and long goals at that, which can break the contest open, when he is on, we will see "Fish" attack the ball in the air with his hands in front of his eyes, if we see him marking the ball like this early, he is in for a big day.

Prediction: These two bitter rivals have already had a couple of close games this year and this one is likely to be no different, with plenty of forward line space at Kilmore, both sides forwards will have plenty of room to work into, the forward line that can manufacture that space and give several options opportunity could gain the advantage, both sides midfields are sure to put on a bit of a show and we should see some centre clearance work at it's finest.. Cracking game coming up, if you are considering coming to Kilmore and tossing up, do yourself a favor and bite the bullet and get to this game.

Freak!

Gritty 14 point win by the Kangaroos today at Kilmore.

Had they have kicked a bit straighter, I suspect it would have been a greater winning margin. Diggers were in front on the scoreboard most of the day, but Sunbury just kept on coming at them. Also thought that Sunbury showed great discipline throughout the match, where free kicks were at a premium, and there was a large amount of stoppages.

Turning points in my opinion were Phil Kauffman's third quarter, were he led Tom Gleeson a merry dance, finishing the quarter with three goals (could easily have been four). Secondly Fish into the ruck after half time was a major positive factor for the Kanga's, as he won almost every centre bounce and and hit out for the half, bringing the running brigade into the game, Sunbury also started to get well on top in clearances and stoppages.

My best on ground was Bobby Johnson, Sunbury Kangaroos. Followed closely by Jason King and Jake Powell.

Was a funny old game yesty, how bad was the field kicking at times? Couldnt even put it down to pressure coz a lot of it was from blokes on their own. Diggers seemed to be keeping the Kanga's at arms length then Kauffman gets em going in the third, Diggers went forward several times early in the last but couldn't seal the deal before Sunbury ran out the final 10 minutes really well.

Agree with the comment about the Big Fish, I know f**k all but surely he's a ruckman who can drift forward and not a forward who pinch hits??? His impact in the last term almost single handedly got the Kanga's going by providing first use.

Amazing effort by Romsey today, Davidson snagged 14 as finally we saw the Redbacks field the best team of the year .... all bar Lee Erwin??? I hope the "c**ksuckers" as they were referred to by the Kanga's huddle at 3qtr time yesty are up for the challenge at Kyneton this week as if so it shapes as being a cracker!!!

I agree doona that fish was definitely the man that swung the momentum in sunburys way. Yes and also Kauffman. I'm not sure about what was said at sunburys huddle at 3 quarter time. I was there but didn't hear anything like that. Did u hear it yourself??? Anyway sometimes be careful what u wish for. But I must admit I spoke to a lot of sunbury people Saturday and none of them rubbished Romsey.

Yeh I heard it, right after the side was read out. Something like, those Romsey c**ksuckers gobbing off from over the fence, lets show them what they're in for ..... or words similar. Guy I was standing next to questioned why there was a need to mention Romsey. Massive crowd around the huddle so unsure if it was Chris in his adress or just one of the players, coulda been a supporter but something to the effect was definately said.

Anyway it's gunna be a rippa, just like last years GF was. Hopefully the weather and grounds are just as good for week two of the finals.

Yeah ok. Well there was only about 5 Romsey people there and I didn't hear anyone mouth off at any stage. Oh well if they need to invent motivation good luck to em.

Thought the exact same thing, I camped near you as ya know and most banter was coming from a lot further back on the hill than from the handful of Romsey lads. Nothing wrong with a bit of banter though this time of year if it extracts the best out of people I reckon.

Want to say well done to Wheels and the Melton lads, didnt end the way you hoped but they've come a long as all rival clubs have acknowledged. Coulda easily chucked it in at quarter time, become undisciplined but they had a real crack in the 2nd and 3rd terms but the gap was to big a hurdle. No one can control 100% of the game and there were definite periods where Romsey were forced to react a little.

Scintialting opening term by Romsey today, but Centrals weren't disgraced one bit in the way they fought it out.

Was just wondering in the 18s have they got the match ups wrong cause I thought it was the highest placed winner to get the double chance?
Should change it from sunbury v kilmore or wallan?

Yeah I agree, centrals definitely came to play. Next weeks games should be massive. The gf rematch and riddell vs diggers. Both diggers and sunbury are probably looking forward to playing against someone other than themselves too.

I agree, Fish was the player that turned the game Sunbury's way in the second half on Saturday.

Should be a cracking match Sunbury v Romsey. Wouldn't surprise me if Riddell beat Diggers in the first semi final. Is that match still being played at Riddell, or has it been changed to another venue ?

Yes well done to all the winners this week end. Went over to Kilmore yesty, thought the game was pretty ordinary really. At least the first half was anyway. Strange game actually. I kept feeling Diggers always had Sunbury's measure then the Kangas come away with a pretty easy win in the end. Kilmore put on a very good day, ground was good, weather was fine & the umpires gave a pretty good account of themselves. :thumbsu:
Went to Boardman today. Well done to the Bombers on a gritty hard fought win. Make no mistake Macedon were very good today. They had a red hot crack & hit every contest very very hard. I reckon the Cat boys left nothing on the sidelines today & thats just the way I'd think both coaches would have wanted this final played. After all you dont want "Soft" games leading into a Finals series,...... I would have thought !
Anyway Boardman Reserve as a venue is ok. BUT, Ground surface was absolutely shit, bordering on flat out dangerous. Whoever signed off on that concrete paddock deserves their arse kicked. I have NO idea HOW, with all the rain we have had of late that you can get a ground to that rock hard condition, but they achieved it. At the risk of stating the bleeding obvious. Muddy grounds make for poor standard footy. Rock hard grounds make for DANGEROUS footy ! There was just NO "give" in that surface whatsoever. And the centre wicket area.........well that was just plain suicidal ! I dont know how the Cats faired, but the Bombers are thankful that they only have the ONE serious injury as a result of that ground surface today !
And finally the Umpires........................................ ................................................................................................If that lot today are 3 of our best then we are in very very bad order thats for sure. I have numerous examples of their ineptitude, as I am sure anyone who witnessed the game today would have ! But what is the point of highlighting that rubbish & smearing our "Brand" when there is NO WAY KNOWN they will get another Final !............... They cant, laziness & incompetence MUST not be rewarded !

Roll on next week. :footy:

Yeah I agree, centrals definitely came to play. Next weeks games should be massive. The gf rematch and riddell vs diggers. Both diggers and sunbury are probably looking forward to playing against someone other than themselves too.
Centrals definitely didn't come to play it was a 10 goal 1st Quarter to Romsey wasn't it. Can't wait to play another team other than diggers. Crowds at Kilmore and Sunbury were quite good. Still the Big 4 teams are up n about. Macedon will rue some chances and bad direction at times I did like Al at quarter time telling the boyz to wake the f up, they seemed to respond. Off to Kyneton this week hope the crowds can get out there playing so far is a joke. Diggers v Sunbury should have been played closer to sunbury just for the crowds sake, ah well atleast we played on a good ground in great conditions. Go Roos

I did... This comment is a mile off the mark....

Provide any evidence that any injury came as a direct result of the playing surface....

Tough call on the umpires.. we didn't see the game obviously because we were at Romsey but the standard of umpiring as a whole is really good in this competition.. the depth is tremendous and there is a lot of youngsters coming through striving to make an impact at senior level.. the future of the competition is looking strong but when there are many that continue to rubbish their decisions and down play their performance.. by all means, suit up next season on a Wednesday night training session, get yourself a whistle and give it a crack because its not easy and it is far harder to umpire in a finals match of any kind that any during the home and away season.. the level of coaching and expertise, faith and ability shown in those getting games is of a great professional standard and there is no doubt that Michael O'Keeffe, Glen Shilling and the team are giving their all to ensure that that the association maintains its credentials as a well officiated competition.. before anyone has a crack at an umpire.. why not have a crack at the players instead? They are the ones that are making mistakes.. the umpires are doing a great job and only those who have given it a crack, have a greater understanding of the game.. the understanding of a decision paid or not paid because of positioning.. interpretation.. etc.. the performance of umpires this season has been far more of a higher standard than the playing efforts and that alone is still an understatment..

This isn't having a crack at you mate.. just wanting to highlight the difficulties of a gig..

It's easy to make assumptions from reading a scoreline but if 2 people who were at the game made those comments about Centrals then maybe we can take their word for it! Getting smashed for a quarter of footy by quality opposition doesn't mean you didnt come to play! Davo possibly put on one of the greatest individual quarters of footy seen in this comp!

On another note. Of the four remaining teams after the weekend, who do you see as likely grand finalists. I think it's hard to go past Sunbury v Romsey. Having said that though any if any of the four teams play at their absolute best on a given day anything could happen. Who do you favour to get up in this weekends semi finals. I think they will both be very close games. Went for a look at the Kyneton ground today, and it looks in great condition, not sure how the Riddell ground is looking ! Any injuries of note after the weekends matches ?

Call in ANY time you like, your always welcome. I'll put the Kettle on & you can do an examination for yourself. Maybe you really do know more than the Doctor ???

You know what ? This is where you really lose me Pal !.........................................We didnt see the Game ????? Then WHY F****** comment ???? Where's the credibility in that ??? I DID !
Of course we have good Umpires in this Comp'.... most are very very good at what they do ! For Christs sake I saw 3 in action on Saturday. That is why it becomes so glaringly apparent when you see BAD ones putting in "Just" another shocker yesterday !

Have Umpires & Umpiring just suddenly become above scrutiny has it ??? o_O

The 3 blokes doing yesterdays game were ordinary, to say the least.
And just for your benefit (one of those that NEVER actually saw the game) I'll tell you why.
These 3 were lazy. Making calls from way too far from the action. Continually got blindsided & guessed or never made a call at all because of that. One notorious Umpire that shall remain nameless (we ALL know who he is) & just refuses to "observe" but instead insists on being a high vis' participant got himself 2 x 50m penalties yesterday for 2 goals. One to each side. Both totally ludicrous & unnecessary decisions.
I'll tell you about the one that happened right in front of where I was. Umpire pays a free kick to Macedon, runs in to show Riddell player where mark is. Another Macedon player picks up the ball from behind the umpire & tosses it back to his team mate, but it is well wide of the mark. Umpire sees that the ball has been incorrectly returned to the player & awards a 50m penalty against Riddell !!! The other, was a 50m penalty the Riddell player talked him into paying !
This same attention seeking "****" of an Umpire topped off his day by reporting a player for making contact as he was going back with the flight of the ball in a marking contest. Terrible decision ! Happened right in front of where I was once again. Ball gets kicked high into the wind, hangs there for what seems an eternity. One player shows great courage & goes back with the fight in an attempt to mark. Two players clash. No one injured. BUT old "I want my time in the Spotlight" picks ONE player out & reports him !
Mind boggling stuff ! And all that Umpire's insisting after the game that the player should TAKE the week wont stop the NEVER before been reported player in telling his story AND getting off come tomorrow night !!! :thumbsu:

And whats this crap about having a crack at the players ??? Did not I say just a few posts back that Saturdays game was pretty ordinary ??? & It WAS !
And lets NOT EVER forget Mr Chris, that EVERY single Umpire in this Competition is a Professional, & by that I mean - They get payed ! BY US !!!...... Not every player does, nowhere near it !!!
That alone should give us a wee right to make a comment dont you think ???

& are you SERIOUS ??? "Only those who have given it a crack have a greater understanding of the game"
Here's what I think you should have said pal - "Only those who have given CRACK a crack have a greater understanding of SOME umpires umpiring the game" !!!

Oh &.........This isn't having a crack at you mate. Just highlighting the difficulties of UNDERSTANDING the gig !

How would that provide a direct result of injury from the playing surface?

Are you serious ?
Being tackled & driven into a ground that rock hard !!!
& did you even look at the centre wicket area ??? I scuffed around a little with my shoe at the massive drop away which was obviously the side of the pitch & I reckon I could feel the concrete just below a sprinkling of sand. The 2 levels were bad enough, but a concrete surprise lurking just below.....Please !
Player safety should be paramount pal, no exemptions !
Hey dont take my word pal, talk to some players. I did !

you serious champ? 15 minutes from woodend, an easy trip up the highway, your starting to sound like those flogs from macedon who complained when then boundary line was to far from the fence, have people in sunbury heard of cars? or even a train??
