I found the third act s**t but we all have opinions I guess.

The ending was a bit meh and a bit slow to get going, but some great lines.

"Can I get some ice cream?"
"What flavour?"
"Doesn't matter - it's for my ass"

2001 - I understand it's a classic, found it way too slow and boring for my liking
Interstellar - already mentioned as a rival
Martian - almost forgot about it, throw it in
T1 - not as good as T2 imo
T2 - best action movie of all time too - agreed
Jurassic Park - agreed, a genre standard
Moon - thoughtful and well acted, throw it in as competition too
Matrix - agreed, in fact possibly best sci fi of all time for what it wanted to do and how well it achieved it, also spawned a lot of derivatives
Alien - already mentioned as a rival
Arrival - already mentioned as a rival (pun intended)
Eternal Sunshine - not really a sci fi, more a character and relationship study, but I rank it as a top 10 of all time (imo, fight me)
I found a whole new appreciation for 2001 after reading the book. It makes infinitely more sense with that benefit.

The Martian is basically MacGyver in space. What's not to love?

Matrix. Revolutionary. Dud sequels sadly.

Contact. Carl Sagan is a hero of mine, you can see his fingerprints right throughout the film.

Contact is indeed underrated and I wish they kept making sci fi like that (we got Arrival and Interstellar I suppose as thoughtful sci fi with heavy family and philosophy elements and not a huge focus on big set pieces in space), but nowadays it seems a lot of the sci fi films I see are shallow, loaded with SFX and with little or no emotional investment in the characters.

Does Inception count? Because I enjoyed that immensely too almost purely for how original it was.

My top 5 (yes with Edge of Tomorrow) probably has The Matrix at the top.

Inception is probably marginal.

I agree with your first point.

The Mrs asked for the movie "Room" and somehow I ended up bringing this one home. She stills gives me s**t about it despite the movie being pretty good. I think we both enjoyed Moon more than the aforementioned Room, when I finally got the right movie for comparison!

Finally got around to watching Room last night.

It was the first time in a long time my eyes have been completely glued to the TV for the entirety of the movie.

Uncomfortable, made me feel sick at times yet completely enthralling and impossible to look away. Brie Larson was tremendous

Some of my favourite sci fi classics not mentioned

Starship Troopers
Robocop
Back to the future
Predator
Wrath of Khan

Starship Troopers - a brilliant satire with some memorable scenes, probably also a rival
Robocop - overrated imo, for superhuman vigilante cop in a dystopian near future I prefer Dredd (Karl Urban version obviously, which maybe should also be in the conversation for best sci fi)
Back to the Future - a good call, I am probably one of very few who didn't mind the third, the first is definitely a worthy classic
Predator - is it sci fi or more action/horror? Great mindless watch (and that's not a slight) but not exactly a masterpiece of film-making
Wrath of Khan - meh @ Star Trek movies, none were really groundbreaking or in conversations for GOAT, and imo I think the best Star Trek movie is actually the first reboot despite the constant lens flare, underdeveloped villain and it not really being in the 'spirit' of the original

Man, this thread makes me realise just how many sci fi movies I've seen...

Whats with the infiltration of American pick ups lately? I’m not car person but I hate the trend they all look hideous. Saw a couple months back Toyota is bringing their american pick up here
They don't seem overly practical to me. Around town they're too bulky and for 4WD'ing their ridiculous wheel base and weight makes things challenging. They'd be good for towing though. Highly expensive too.

Name a couple of cars that Aussie bogans used to purchase that stopped getting manufactured, then take into account the explosion of the 4 door ute market. It's not a coincidence

**** sake. Somewhere in this thread amongst all the absolute trash about sci fi someone recommended a movie that I quickly googled and it sounded pretty good. Think it was a thriller. Might've had Jamie Foxx in it? Halp.
