Looking from a negative perspective, he could be saying he really wants to stay but damn it's hard choosing to turn your back on $400k extra per year. All these quality FA's are having to choose between cellar dwellers with plenty of cap space and current clubs with a chance of success but less available space. He's basically saying he wants more to stay but understands why the club can only offer what it can. Of course, I'd give him $200k of Mackays coin without blinking an eyelid. Too late for that though.

Yes some clubs may offer overs however I don't think it will be in the facility of $400k a year

Sloaney is also being smart in setting up some business investments so I don't think he will be hard up for a dollar when he eventually retires

It's probably the max difference in a perfect storm situation. Our lowest might be $650k and Saints might have $1m plus more of the extra marketing dollars available. I'd guess there'd likely be 3-4 clubs who will table a $200k extra per year offer. There is a chance that there's a club who will offer in the vicinity of $400k more, but maybe not too much of one.

When coupled with his quotes of footy being business now you could look at it as he would love to stay, but it is hard for him to justify staying given the amount of $$ he will be sacrificing compared to what other clubs are prepared to offer above us. Whereas a loyalty bonus to 1 club players would help reduce the financial gap in the equation that he has to decide on and help sway it our direction.

Not saying thats the case but thats the concern for mine and why you can't 100% say those comments are a positive sign (apart from the fact it does demonstrate that he likes it here and would be happy/wants to stay but not necessarily that he actually will)
He is the luke hodge of our club , more than just kicks, tackles and relentless run. Pay him accordingly and if someone offers a ridiculous amount at least we are in the ball park. He is going to be a great finals player with his game style and off the field, around the club he is the heart and soul so pay him accordingly. A few tough decisions will need to be made on players that won't be around at our next flag tilt despite the fact they can still contribute.

Judging by what was said in Caro's article, CC's comments and Mark Bickley's comments on 5aa, Sloane is ready to sign but he wants a longer contract than what the club is offering. Sloane wants a contract that will see him at the club until the end of 2019. Given that he is already contracted for 2015 that is only a 4 year contract, the club has shown with Mackay they don't have an issue with 4 year contracts, so they should be jumping at that offer. My guess is that rory wants his new contract cover the 2015 season, for which the club has already balanced their salary cap so it is going to cause a delay for them to work out how they can do that.

I very much doubt afc will have a problem offering Sloane a long-term deal - in fact I think they would prefer it! However, given it's longer duration, it may take longer to work through. Patience ;)

When the saints are offering 800k a year and nobes is saying we can only give you 450k max it probably takes a while to meet in the middle.

Would be incompetent and we would lose more players in the long run if we just offered up more than plan to get it done quickly.

Surely sloane won't be offered less than 600pa

If Mackays getting $400k and we offered Sloane $450k, I wouldn't blame him for pissing on Nobles shoes before walking out the door, never to return.

All the talk has been that the sticking point is contract length not dollars.

Given the cap goes up for a 5 year deal he should be getting more than $600k per year. I'd say $3.5M should be more like it. We are taking about one of our top 4 players.

5 years is a long time and a big investment.

Maybe he gets $700,000 for years 4 and 5 but only gets $400,000 year 1 and $600,000 the 3rd and 4th year.

Have to factor in Cameron and Aish's combined $1.5 mil a season.

I think $3.5m is fair for sloane. If we are offering less then $600k then I'll fill out the paper work for the pre season draft for him.
