Some names I've heard them referred to:

Stephen Gilham: Gil
Beau Dowler: Growler
Liam Shiels: Lime

and a blast from the past...

Tony Hall: Soak

Heard Brendan Bolton refer to a player as Growler during his 3 quarter time address today. That's pretty much a lock on Dowler's nickname.

The nicknames I quoted are not ones I made up :)

1989, about half of the Hawks were at a country resort near my hometown. I met quite a few household names and ended up keeping in touch with quite a few of the squad until I went oversea in late 1994.

Tony Hall was injured (thanks to an Andy Collins tackle in a State game). His nick at the time was Soak purely because he liked a drink !

As for the others, cast your minds waaay back to Round 22 last season after we fell in a heap against the Bombers... Sewelly flattened, Max injured... elusive finals' spot missed once and for all....

There was an after match function in the Yarra Room. Upon leaving, the players left in groups of about 4 or 5 with security. One of the last to leave, my daughter and I shared a lift with Beau Muston, Travis Tuck and who I think (he was behind me so didn't get a good look) was Ben McGlynn. Beau Dowler was caught upstairs chatting to an elderly lady. On the way down to the ground floor, Beau M said to another player... 'Growler's still up there, is he?'.

Stephen Gilham. Training sessions... practice game in the pouring rain at Ballarat... it's 'Gil'.

Liam Shiels... I have heard him called 'Lime' at training. Probably to do with his name. Phonetically, l-i-a-m does sound like l-i-m-e.

Was that pre or post GF Garf?

If it was post, it would have been quite an experience being involved in the back to back celebrations

I heard this from Dermott Brereton and I don't know if he was making it up but he told me Andy Collins's nickname was knickers because John Platten dacked him one day and that's what he was wearing

i could believe that seen how fast he appears sometimes all you see is a blur then on the tv you see it is him slidding between 2 opposition players and snatching the ball i love it !!!:thumbsu::thumbsu:

it was on an episode on from the nest in 2008 before Brownie's and changa's 100th games. it is a pretty good nickname.

I heard someone from Hawthorn on TV (can't for the life of me remember who) refer to Stuey Dew as "The Eight-Minute Wonder" after his GF performance. This would undoubtedly have to be shortened for on-field purposes perhaps to "Wonder" ???

Chris Mew was also referred to as "BP" throughout his career (their slogan was "The Quiet Achiever" during the 80s although given recent events in the Gulf of Mexico....)

Chris Wittman was also referred to occasionally as "Taxi" or "Cabcharge". Dermott Brereton has told the story about how there was a state game down in Tasmania during the late 80s at the time of the pilot's strike. Both he and Wittman were selected to play (presumably with a few other Hawk teammates from the time) but because of the pilot's strike the game was cancelled. All the players were given Cabcharge vouchers to get home. Anyway, Witts used his to go home, told the cabbie to wait for him whilst he collected his ski gear and got back in the taxi for a free ride up to Mt Hotham for a weekend's skiing.

Taylor Duryea.

The mrs kindly pointed out that his surname looked similar to the terminology for unformed stools. Couldn't help but call him "runs". :D

Most of the players seem to call that guy in #23 "Franky" rather than "Buddy".

I also recall seeing Dunstall's nickname as "Beetle". Never actually heard anyon call him that, though.

What are the reasons for the nicknames of Whitecross, Birchall, Duryea, Gilham, Milne, Peterson and Shiels?

Also, players call Whitecross "Whitey". That was his nickname in junior football too I believe.

Another one for Birchall is Birch - just seems to be what everyone calls him.

Gilham could also be Gilly, Shiels can be Shielsy and Riley Milne could be Milney.

Great stuff .... and Hudson performed miracles just like Houdini! :)

Change Ayres to 'Conan the Librarian'.. that's where it came from, he was a librarian's assistant during the first few years. That and his hair, lol

Peter Hudson to just 'God' (moved to centre-half forward after Jesus came to Hawthorn)

Robert Campbell to Robbie

Lekkas was the Greek (another one)

As mentioned, Sammy Mitchell is Stumpy (from the clarkson interview)

Isn't Peterson called Chubby for obvious reasons?

And no, we all called McGlynn Mighty Mouse. Good luck to him with the Geese. And JK Cubed.
