Collingwood's Lachlan Keeffe and Josh Thomas are banned from the AFL until February 10 2017 but cab train from Dec 16. I dont follow the Pies closely enough to know anything about these guys as footballers. But with list spots available and a "shallow" draft, is either one worth investing in for 2017 forward?

I'm sure we would have heard more about them if that were the case (them being any good). Can they even be on a list at the moment - given the are banned?

"Collingwood has delisted Keeffe and Thomas but they are eligible to nominate for the draft and be placed on an AFL list in 2016.

The Magpies have promised to place the pair on their rookie list.

Keeffe, 25, is a versatile tall and had played 40 games with the Magpies before being banned while Thomas, 24, had played 32 matches after overcoming a series of injuries and is regarded as an excellent stoppage player."

They're both decent players and Keeffe played some very good football he's a big guy as well who under different circumstances would be good as he would be backup in defence. He will have missed a lot of football though and be 27 by the time he's able to play again so I'd look elsewhere.

They may find a home at Essendon or Gold Coast.

I'm not sure if it's been mentioned but would Ahmed Saad be worth a look?

Pure small forward with speed. Averages 1.5 goals a game. Puts the pressure on. Not 100% sure on his age and fully over all his stats but plays a position we lack.

What is the view of others?

We've got at least 4 players on our list we're paying good money to do just that (small forward), beats me why we rate our blokes so high when you look at his stats.
The small forward at Geelong is still an open position imo despite the hype of some. Lang, Gregson, Cockatoo, McCarthy, all look alright at times but no one has claimed the position yet.

I've read that like 5 times over and I'm still not 100% sure on where you stand with Saad haha.

Just looked up his stats, he avgs about 9 disposals, 2 marks, 3 tackles and a goal and a bit a game (career ).

His best year was 2012 where he played 16 games and kicked 28 goals, 10 disposals, 2 marks, just over 3 tackles and 2 inside 50s. Also isn't that old at 26.

I'd take a punt. Maybe rookie list him?

The only issue I see is that Lang and Cockatoo aren't small forwards. Yes, Lang in particular, plays forward but long term they are bona fide midfielders or at very least half forwards. They need time in the middle for their development.

We're building youth so at the present I don't see how they'd want to add to our numbers of wannabee's. They gave the best young player to Lang this year, beats me, because he goes missing for to often imo and doesn't kick enough goals. Same goes for Gregson.
Thurlow was head and shoulders better with Jake Kolo showing plenty as well.... But you're right we need a decent small forward.

Just shows how differently we view things. I would view Thurlow's 2015 was underwhelming at best, and I saw signs of real class from Lang starting to emerge.

Well there you go!..Thurlow av disposals for the year 17.5,..Lang 13.5 and he plays midfield.
I think Jacko did alright given his unfortunate start as well! Not quite Enright stats but he's on the way.:thumbsu:
Not that I don't see a future for Lang.

I was happy with the year of both players.

Thurlow's class is obvious, but he also showed at times he could defend 1 on 1.
I was expecting a strong year before he hurt his kidney, and I was really impressed after that setback.

Lang got better as the year went on. He anticipates the play well, seems to have good vision and is a smart ball user, all traits that suggest he'll have a career. He also showed great ability without the football, he tackled and pressured very well when the ball left congestion.

Although I don't see either as "breakout" candidate's. I think they'll both come back fitter and stronger, and improve on their 2015 season. I see both as having a pretty high ceiling.

The thing I liked about Thurlow the most was his kicking out from full back. Marked improvement on Bartel/Mackie. He actually would hit targets as opposed to kicking long to a pack.

One special thing I like about Thurlow is the way he can elevate and sit on his opponents head and take hangers. Deflates his opponents confidence and besides looks great! I'm hoping he'll ave around 20 possessions a game in 2016 because his disposal is first class.

What I like about Lang is he's a tough little bloke (not to little) I'm looking to see big development with him, I'm sure he's the hard working type.

The thing that impresses me alot with Lang is he seems to have very sticky fingers extracting the ball, just seems to be able to pluck it out of there, natural footballer.

More than happy to add
Martin
Wright
Adcock
Kavanagh
Wright a handy small forward (we need)
Martin very handy ball accumulator
Adcock played with most of our coaches, has been a sure player and captain for years at Brisbane
Kavanagh a very early pick knocked over by the injectors which gives him great credence in my view.

Underwhelming? The kid has just played his first full season of senior footy - coming off a significant pre-season injury, mind you - and you describe his year in that way? I thought given the factors cited he was very good.

Agree re Lang though. 'Class' is the right word.
