Could be worse. I’d be happy with 290

Top 7 batsmen getting starts, 6 of them scoring 25 or more, only 1 getting to 50. I notice Fraser-McGurk has decided he just wants to play T20 so what's the point in selecting him? He apparently doesn't want to play the longer form of the game. A couple of years ago I was comfortable with the thought Hunt would progress to Test cricket. For some reason we decided to make him captain, the wheels fell off and he's been nothing ever since. Lehmann made his 100 in the 1st match so we can't expect him to get another decent score for at least the next 5-6 games.

I feel like Waldorf and Statler, the two old guys who sit up in the box in the Muppet Show. I have no idea why I keep showing up every season. There's no pleasure in following the Redbacks. I blame the Chappells, Sobers, Favell, Richards and Hookes for this. They made the game so damned exciting to watch, it's in the blood.

We've got the Blues at 6-88 in the 2nd session.

Now, if I put my Redbacks hat on, we will let them off the hook with the last 4 NSW batsman scoring a combined 180 so instead of having a great first innings lead, it will be negligible.

And then of course, we will be bowled out for 100, with NSW getting home comfortably in their 2nd innings to win by 5 wickets.

I reckon you should be head coach. Always seem to have all the answers.

So-called "top order batsmen" this year:

Smith 21, 4, 11, 33. - 69 runs @ 17.25
Hunt 16, 2, 26, 7. - 51 runs @ 12.75
Drew 6, 1, 29, 21 - 57 runs @ 14.25

Geez.

Then of course, Lehmann gone for 8, Fraser-McGurk for 1. 6/111. Give it away guys and find another sport.
What's happened to Henry Hunt?

Couldn't stop making runs 2 years ago.....

Even as a Qlder I am glad McSweeney made the move to SA to get more opportunities, was always going to find it tough up here to get regular shield matches for Qld even though he was putting up massive premier cricket numbers. Glad we all are getting the chance to see him do what we knew he would start to do with more opportunities.

Just a theory, but it smacks of what happened to Nathan Adcock. Young talent on the horizon, making his way in 1st class cricket, has the captaincy thrust upon him when he was still cutting his teeth, struggled with the added responsibility. I hope he can work his way out of it.

I remember seeing the video of Tim Nielsen and then chairman of selectors James Pyke ambushing him at training and informing him he was going to be captain. Hunt had no idea about it and you could see from the look on his face that he didn't really want it but had to say yes in front of the camera. Nielsen and Pyke thought they were so clever. Since that time he's never been the same!

Wasn't there some bizarre story about the Australian selectors wanting the SACA to play Adcock because they liked his part time spin?

Truly dumbfounding.

That wouldn't have had much to do with his selection as captain. At the time he was making enough runs to be in the team. If Test selectors wanted him to bowl more, they would just direct the Redbacks to do this, no matter who was captain. It's not unusual for Test selectors to request certain players to bat in certain positions, etc.

I know at grade level we were forever getting directions from state selectors. That's why we were there, to feed the next level. I knew Nathan very well at that time and we used to talk cricket. When he was chosen as captain, I went over to congratulate him. A normally self-confident person, I was a little surprised when he asked if I thought he should be captain. To me, that indicated he wasn't sure within himself if he was up to the job, and through the season I saw his batting fall away.

Nathan burst onto the scene with 105 and then 188 in his first 2 innings. The only player who had scored a century in first 2 "A" grade innings was Gordon Greenidge when he played for Adelaide, so Nathan was in good company. He made 60-something in his next innings and many good judges around grade traps were touting him as the next biggest thing since Darren Lehmann.

It was a real shame that, for whatever reason, his 1st class career came to such an abrupt halt. I can never say for certain that captaincy was the reason, but I would bet it was a contributing factor.

Nathan Adcock was a spud at FC level. Imagine talking up a bloke averaging 23 and passed 50 five times in over 50 innings. If you take out his extreme outlier of a season in 06/07 (where he made 324 runs at 46.28) his career stats would read:

25 matches, 45 innings', 2 n/o, 866 runs, average 20.14, 1x 100, 1x 50

Simply not up to the grade at that level.

And he continued his negative effect on SA cricket as a SACA board member straight from the eastern suburbs/uni boys club...
