I think some of the biggest confusion this season has stemmed from non-controlling umpires making decisions on borderline calls 50m away. Unless they sort this out so that the non-controlling umpire can ONLY call howlers because the controlling umpire is unsighted, I don't see any benefit in introducing more umpires. I think three is plenty as it is anyway.

Remove the bounce, make them full time by 20__.

I don’t think this will make things drastically worse, apart from more non controlling umpire confusion, but it certainly doesn’t strike me as something that will make things better.

Overhaul the system, stop just throwing shit at the wall.

How can they pretend to care about the umpires and not get rid of the bounce? The umpires have been asking it for years, and at the moment you have umpires judged on decision making and bouncing, who gives a * if a good decision maker cant bounce.
I love the bounce and would support having a specialist non-umpire bouncer who just does that and then leaves the field until the next time they're needed.

I've watched a fair bit of SANFL this year and the umpiring is so much better than AFL. I make some allowance for the pace of the game, but with SANFL you can predict almost all the time what is or is not going to be called a free kick. With AFL it's a lottery with over officiating in some areas (ruck infringements) and under officiating in others (incorrect disposal).

The biggest difference is the short amount of time they take to call a ball up, and then how fast they do it. Makes the game flow far better than what the AFL achieves.

Perhaps some sort of bounce robot or drone that could whip in, bounce it then take off?

This x1000

Anytime I go back and watch older games one thing that strikes me is how quickly ballups are called

Somewhere along the line the AFL decided ballups were an issue as they held up the flow of the game when in fact the opposite is true

Delaying the whistle allows for more players to get to a contest as the ball stops moving. This is then exacerbated by nominating ruckmen and other associated bullshit that takes more time allowing more seagulls to get to the chip

It’s all very counterproductive

It’s icky how obvious it is that the league is dictating how umpires interpret the rules. You can tell they want to call a ball-up or penalise incorrect disposal, but the AFL has told them they have to do whatever they can to reduce stoppages. Hence you get sides like Richmond dominating by having a swarm of scrappers that keep the ball moving forward by any means possible

Yeah 4 sure.

Get rid of in nominating a ruck etc

Yep

3rd man up
nominating ruckmen
1m separation between ruckmen

All solutions to problems that didn't exist (and in many ways they created further problems around congestion which is what they were apparently trying to solve).

If players block, hold or otherwise infringe in a ruck contest then there are rules in place and free kicks can be paid. But the whole nomination debacle is making the game worse.

And, lets be honest, these changes would hurt our team as we currently are. They would favour a fitter ruckman, plus fitter mids (getting the ball moving - thrown up or ball in - faster).

You have to nominate a ruck for the simple reason that the ruckman can't be inpeaded from the ruck contest by other players .

The nominating for the ruck just clarifies who not impead and everyone is on the same page .

Its fine the way it is ATM the ump just needs to call a ball up quicker and if your ruck is not at the contest then you will be at a disadvantage when another player has to ruck

Umps also need to call incorrect disposal more often . If you drop it , it misses your hand or boot or a team mate takes it from you its incorrect disposal .

Tunnel balling it out the back is not correct disposal.
