Would Ablett be on much coin? He went back for personal reasons and to win a flag.

They've traded a ton of guys in and normally there is a premium to get someone to move clubs - Dalhaus, Rohan, Henderson, Stanley, plus those you mentioned. Also guys who've had breakout form the last few years like Stewart, Blicavs, Duncan would have had improved contracts.

Dahlhaus, Rohan, Henderson and Stanley aren't exactly the elite of the competition. Every club has a Stewart, Blicavs and Duncan but we don't question how they are retained.

Anyway, I think this kind of discussion is largely pointless - none of us are privy to how most players are paid - you, me, Caro and Tom Browne only have access to certain numbers:

- Contract lengths and expiry dates
- If they are a recent draftee - the base salary is known
- The total salary cap (and salary floor) per club

Speculation about total numbers per player, front-loading and back-loading, ambassador and third party payments, and other match bonuses are just that - speculation.

Ablett's retirement would immediately cause a lot of money to be available.

The 'topping up' includes players like Steven and Jenkins whose salaries are at least half paid by St Kilda and Adelaide respectively, and Menegola, Miers, Ratugolea etc who may be mature age recruits but would also be paid not very much in their first two years. Which other players apart from Dangerfield, Hawkins and Selwood would be getting paid the big bucks?
Miers is only 20 or something

What are everyone's thoughts on the GF winner? I'd like Geelong to win, as I think Richmond have had enough success, but I am not at all convinced by them. They beat 8th placed Collingwood and a flakey Brisbane who never looked in it. Tigers also smashed them late in the season.

Unfortunately I think the game will break open in the second and Tigers will win by about 5 goals.

As for who would I prefer to win the GF ... given the two teams that are left, its sort of like asking me how would you prefer to die, be shoot or electrocuted.

The Tiger Army have been obnoxious at a level surpassing the Hawthorn Clowns ( I know its hard to imagine ) and their team has many campaigners in it:
Lynch, Riewoldt, The Diver Grimes , Captain Brylcreem and the one with a room temperature IQ Dustbin.

Gee thats enough to dislike them.

BUT that gets trumped by one single tosser that I would be pissed if he won a Premiership Medal.

Dangerego the leagues biggest narcissist... and that's a breathtaking feat out doing the Fremantle captain.

So for me FU(K Geelong.

I want Richmond to win.

Prediction Tigers by 21.

100% agree. Stuff Geelong, would prefer them to suffer more GF pain. Besides, though I also despise Richmond, they probably deserve a dynasty. Funny to think that they were on the brink of sacking Hardwick at one stage - wish they had ☹️

I genuinely won't know who i'm barracking for till part way through the game. The last time that happened was 2013 and only because i was there.
I get that when watching some neutral games, I sit down thinking I want one team to win only to find out 10 mins in I'm barracking for the other team. All sorts of reasons like an individual act of poor sportsmanship to reacting to the commentators support for one of the teams. And sometimes just cos.

I seriously hate Richmond. Dangerfield and JSelwood give me the absolute shits but three prelim losses in four years is enough lols for me. Go Geelong. **** Richmond. They don't deserve to be anywhere near 2001-2004 Brisbane or 2012-2015 Hawthorn but they'll be spoken about in the same light if they win.

They’ll likely be up there again next year too unfortunately.

Only hope is they lose some fringe players (Broad, Markov) in the trade period that tests their depth. Surprised that someone like Norf hasn’t thrown stupid money at a player such as Castagna. Pry a small forward from the premiership team a la Dan Butler last year at well above the odds pay when in reality they’re an average player at best.

Lot of their better players will be getting close to or the wrong side of 30 next year (Dusty, Riewoldt, Edwards, Cotchin, Lynch, Prestia, Houli, Grimes & Astbury) but you could arguably make the same claim of our list in terms of top end talent being in the 28-34yo age bracket (Gov, Shuey, JK, Bunga, Gaff, JD, Nic, Shepp & Reddo).

But unfortunately their kids look good (Bolton, Balta, Graham, Ross, Baker etc).

I much prefer the Richmond I remember from around 1987 to 2016. All the bandwagon fans that have come out of the woodwork after 2017 are absolute insufferable flogs of the highest order.

Question: do you think the grand final winner photo will take place as per normal or they will be socially distanced?

The kids always look good in a premiership team. I remember that the hawks had some great depth during their flag run, didn't turn out so good once the real stars retired.

Richmond's gameplan will be cracked soon enough. Should have already happened but coaches are a stubborn lot. I expect them to flog Geelong and for a new team to break them open in the finals next year.

They obviously are well run, but they've also been topping up for years to try and win a flag so should be right at the limit salary cap wise. Who's eating the big pay cut to get Cameron in?

They apparently have money available that was going to be there for Kelly had he decided to re-sign with Geelong.

Cats have also been planning this deal for the past two years, they have had plenty of time to map out how they balance the salary cap.

Credit to them, I'd say they (along with Brisbane in more recent years) have by far the best off-field management in the competition.
