Reiwoldt talking to Geisch during NAB semi finals

Oooooh, one questionable call in our favour outrules the unstoppable barrage of unexplained calls in your favour in the third quarter. Cool story bro. You'd be screaming and sooking far worse if you were on the wrong end of this.

Have to laugh at Saints fans complaining about the umpiring, when it could be argued that if it wasn't for the umpires in the last two finals series they wouldn't have had the chance to embarrass themselves on the biggest stage of them all two years in a row.

I actually think is the way it should be.

At each game, there should be an "umpiring director", that is approachable by the captain of each team at any break.

This way, the player(s) never have to approach the actual matchday umpires, and any "pertinent" message that a captain gives to the "UD" on the day can then be passed on to the umpires in a sensible manner.

Also, any explanations needed can also be handled by the designated "UD" on the day.

But hey, that makes too much sense, so the AFL will never introduce it.;)

excellent idea.

It would stop the unpleasantness that occurred last night. AFL is all about appearance, and having a captain on the bench talking to the umpires Director during a match is not a good look.

Nick will probably get fined, as he knows darn well he is not allowed to do what he did. Like it or not he went outside the current rules.

Someone needs to ask Giesch how St Kilda constantly gets away with their defenders scragging their opponents intentionally and letting the loose 3rd man up mark easily.

Not sure why theres so much discussion about the umpiring in a NAB cup game that was won by what 45 or so points was it? It's hardly like it made a difference. The majority of the frees were ok anyway based on current interpretations. Also we saw stuff like Jetta's goal get claimed as a point even though even in slow motion you couldn't see anyone get a hand on it. The reason the frees were so in our favour was because the saints were getting thrashed in the ruck (yeah ruckman 193 cm and shorter doesn't really work ) and so our midfielders were always first to the ball and as a result kept getting frees.

Giesch probably just told Roo to get his hand off it

Get your hand off it, Essendon got the majority of 50/50 calls going their way and quite a few frees that weren't even there. Most neutral supporters are saying the same thing so it's not just sour grapes from St Kilda supporters.

The Goddard free and 50 metre penalty for a bit of push and shove was pathetic. The Essendon player started it and Goddard just retaliated.

Agree we got the rub of the green. That said, we were first to the ball... but still got many of the 50/50 decisions.

In response to the first part.. if you flip a coin 100 times it will not come up 50 heads, 50 tails ;)
In response to Goddard retaliating and getting done for it, you telling me that if you're retaliating you could just come along and uppercut a bloke and everything should be fine as long as the other guy started it? I would've thought it's simply smart play by Melksham to do enough to suck Goddard in, and the man that I think should be your captain didn't show many brains in this instance.

Could not believe the comment that it is perceived that Crywoldt gets harshly treated by the umps.. wow! Watch footy much? Gets free kicks during the season when a player lays a fingernail on his tricep.
The one thing that stood out to me last night is Goddard either: doesn't know the rules of AFL or thinks he's bigger than the game. The way he looks around when things don't go his way, it makes me think it's the latter.

So under what rule would they fine him for being in breach?
He's the captain so he's perfectly entitled, under the current rules, to talk to the umpires.
I'm not sure there's actually a rule that bars anybody from talking to the Umpires Director?
And if there sin't a specific rule, why 'would he know darn well he's not allowed to do it'?

Haha. That video only goes to prove my point. Let's go through the decisions, shall we?

1. The "soft" Ablett free was similar to what Ling gets pinged for. If Ling was doing the same thing to Hayes or Dal Santo, you'd be howling for a free, but it seems OK for Jones to do the same. Funny about that.
2. The Mooney push in the back was all Dawson's fault. If you look at the reverse angle, Mooney was standing about 5m off the pack, but Dawson buffeted Mooney into the contest. Nothing in it.
3. The "throw" against Varcoe was just an open handed slap of the ball, something you see numerous times. Play on.
4. Wouldn't have classed that as in the back, but Jones should've got a free for holding the man as he clearly handballed before the Varcoe tackle.
5. Hawkins was merely holding his ground. If a 100kg plus guy pushed his opponent fair and square in the back, he would've have been pushed forwards, not able to jump straight up like he did.
6. Hawkins played on, but the ball was stripped out of his hands by the Gilbert tackle. No prior opportunity, so play on.
7. I'll give you that one. Blatant shove in the back by Johnson.
8. Didn't get a clear view of it, but it didn't seem much in it.
9. Johnson was off balance due to a tangle of legs when he turned around. He didn't run into Montagna with his head down, Montagna ran in and tackled him high. Unfortunate, but that's a free kick any day of the week.
10. Gilbert might not have had much prior opportunity, but if he made the effort to at least look like he was trying to move the ball on, he should've been OK. He didn't though, so it was holding the ball. Fair enough too.
11. Head over the ball. Dal Santo momentarily had his arm around Stokes' neck before the forward momentum of the tackle forced him to make contact with Fisher's legs. Technical, but it was there.
12. Similar to above. Selwood had his head over the ball and was gaining his feet before being poorly tackled by Gwilt. Free any day of the week.

In the end I've heard 1million times already this year "who cares about the NAB Cup?!" but it seems all the sooky St Kilda fans do when the frees don't go their way and they don't know the rules so they wonder why. But then when they lose the game they just act like the game never even existed.

It has been a very long summer for them.

Sadly, summer really is the ONLY long thing they have going for them....

it's only the NAB cup when we win. If we'd lost, it would be a sure sign of us having a horrible, terrible year
