there are tv channels devoted to religious preaching, literally dozens in the US

There's more channels devoted selling steak knives and vegetable shredders however.

We don't live in the USA however.

In terms of outspoken anthiests/agnostics i bet you could name dawkins, hitchens, harris, shermer...

anyone else??

That fat dickhead from Penn and Teller?

LOL where are you trying to drive this argument now?

That fat dickhead from Penn and Teller?

...and the other one.

Ill look it up, and don't doubt for a second it is not possible for a non-religious war...but surely people cant argue religion through war played a huge role in history.

Getting off topic now anyway :)

It played small parts in the scheme of humanities wars. Only militant atheists will try to ply the line it's responsible for the vast majority of the planets conflicts.

How many Brownlows is that god has won? An amazing achievement, given he has no left foot. It must also be acknowledged though, that god isn't a good team man. He never attends team meetings, not that I blame him for this.

Most wars were not religous.

I don't see how it's different to any other personal pre-game ritual. The playing group is going to be split up doing their own things either solo or in small groups and I doubt any of them would bat an eyelid at a few guys praying in a corner of the room.
Non-religious AFL players are lucky they live in a society that is not dominated by one religion - foreign soccer players in Qatar or Saudi Arabian teams would feel much more excluded in the dressing room I'd imagine.

On one hand we have prayer rooms for AFL spectators to encourage people from all faiths to support the game, and then some people have a wobbly when the game's best player gives thanks to God - makes no sense to me.

Religion works best if it is voluntary, with no mind games or indoctrinatiom.

I thought this was going to be historical. Like apparently hawthorn used to have protestants v catholics in training games

I think the whole friday night lights style praying for god to help you win is a bit silly, and thats why I wouldn't do it. But if other people do it it has no impact on me so why would I care?

If he were attempting to pressure it onto others then that would be an issue with creating a hostile workplace but that doesn't seem to be the case at all here.

Tim Tebow thread

I think he just got delisted at Denver Broncos. evo bought a hoopty wagon off him, and there were worry beads with a crucifix hanging from the rearview mirror, and evo inherited them with requisite piety :thumbsu:

I will get down on one knee to pray for kosher blanket/s

I embrace

Well, does that go the other way too(i.e. religious acceptance of homosexuality, de facto relationships, abortion etc)?

In my mind yes. People shouldn't be so judgmental of others, if they want to do something, or believe in something, then just let them be and don't force your views down their throat and say that they're wrong. It's ok to discuss, just don't force yourself on them. You don't have to like it, you don't even have to respect it, but you can just leave them be.

Unfortunately as humans we're inherently argumentative and protective of our own views, so there will always be these differences of opinion.

History of human wars:
The history of human warfare goes back to the beginning of recorded history (and, no doubt, well before that). A recent comprehensive compilation of the history of human warfare, Encyclopedia of Wars by Charles Phillips and Alan Axelrod documents 1763 wars, of which 123 have been classified to involve a religious conflict. So, what people have considered to be "most" really amounts to less than 7% of all wars. It is interesting to note that 66 of these wars (more than 50%) involved Islam, which did not even exist as a religion for the first 3,000 years of recorded human warfare.

That is one of the most ignorant comments I have ever seen on BF. I just hope you don't think you are an Atheist because even this is a religion.

A stupid ignorant and biggoted statement based on your own opinion.

No it isn't. Which god do atheists worship? Where are their churches? Do they door knock on Sundays? Do they avoid paying taxes like all religions do?

Claiming it is is absolutely stupid and ignorant though.
