Review Review of St Kilda drafting 2006 - present

Some of us were expressing concern during 2010 (and post 2009 with Lovett and even further back with Brad Howard, Matthew Clarke and Fraser Gehrig).

I called out "sack the coach" during the first game of 2007, though I did change my mind at some point, maybe march 2008.

OK, OK ... you were first :D

Looks like we were polar opposites. I joined BF to chat about where the _uck we were headed and what we were going to do in that year's draft to address it.

You got all positive after a year of bitching and joined?

Don't get me wrong. I want the guys to play finals and be competitive with the best of them. But I didn't think it was too hard to put some resources into recruiting and get some good kids to put some money in the piggy bank each year. Particularly when the team had players like Riewoldt, Hayes, Goddard, Dal Santo, Fisher, Blake, Baker, Montagna, Milne, Gardiner, Hudghton, Ball and Gram in it.

Maybe it is due to a background of watching the Saints though the 1980s, where a star like Lockett would occasionally appear to lift the gloom, but I like seeing the younger guys develop and come through the ranks.

SOS, in his interview with Leigh Matthews this year, described the forward press as "Ross's brain child".

I know what you mean though..

There were little snippetts like this though, that suggested that Tudor was "involved". ( Not sure what happened to the importance of kicking).

I didnt see the forward pressure thing coming.
Coming into 2008 I was pretty confident about:
1. The Saints having the best backline in the AFL with Hudghton, Fisher, Gilbert, Gram, BJ and Blake. Max was back and fit. Great depth with very promising performances by Rookie Jayden Attard, he'll be great when he comes back from injury... won't he?

2. Young David Armitage was surely going to have a breakout season, and Jarryn Geary had an impressive start to 2008 with 21 disposals in round 1.

3. Schnieder had a good name, and Stephen King would surely be an improvement over Clarke/Rix/Kosi.

4. Big Frase was going round again.. surely he'll kick 70 odd and Jarryd Allen had looked the goods playing for the Scorps. This was going to be Kosi's breakout year.

5. Young Luke Miles was on the rookie list, mature age and one of the fastest players out there.

6. Surely after making a return late in 2007, and after a preseason, Matt Maguire was due for a big return. Xavier Clarke seemed to be holding his fitness too.

Not very good at it am I

From 2005-2009 this is how the 3 clubs have gone

Saints 11 from 48 left
Pies 22 from 41 left
Cats 22 from 42 left

That has to be very worrying, but lets hope with Pelchan there it changes.

its no fluke,
they do have nearly 1 coach for 2 players or 1 coach for each player. Its no wonder they don't get rid of many players.

they have to spend their millions on something

Which sort of lines up with my other regret regarding the curse of Gehrig.
Some of the other teams seem to pick them up no worries.

Jack RIEWOLDT was taken after Armitage. Is there something about that name... nah plenty of Jacks around. Then there was Kurt Tippett taken a few after Howard.
We could have even got Jesse White with the pick we used to redraft Ferguson.

Freo picked up recycled Kepler Bradley well after the pick we used to redraft Gehrig.

Why isn't Mitch Brown, ( taken with Geelong's first pick a couple after Tom Lynch ) , disgruntled by the lack of opportunity? A question for any Tom's that may have got disgruntled and asked to be traded.

How annoying is it for the Cats to just grab Podsiadly out of the VFL.

Jack Darling last year.

Mitch Brown hasnt been available for selection very often. Broke his leg in a practice match and missed his whole first year, then he rebroke it and missed 90% of 2010 but made about a 5 game VFL comeback until he did his shoulder, then made into the team this year until he did his shoulder again. Has only played 2 afl games but he has rarely been available and hasnt played much VFL.

Whilst I'm sure you know him better than me, I couldn't help but be impressed with the 5 goals he kicked against Sandringham early in the season - after kicking 7 the week before.

I nearly choked on my brekkie when I saw the respective club summaries. Urgh.

The Academy will go a long way to addressing this, but it will take years to flow through. Hopefully the Saints can keep the resources in place (i.e. maintain funding) once it gets established.

when he has played he has been impressive, he has only played such few AFL games due to injury though, not his vfl form. If he had played as many games as lynch and walsh in the vfl i would argue that he would have played a lot more AFL footy. Brown has no reason to complain of lacking opportunity, he has been extremely unfortunate with injuries but once fit he was straight in after only a couple of VFL games.

Terry Milera (Trade - previously listed player, GWS)

Rookie-listed players
Out:
Steven Gaertner (Retired)
Robert Eddy (Delisted)
Tom Walsh (Traded to Sydney)

We have delisted 10 primary listed players and replaced 2 of them already - leaving 8 spots

St Kilda will most likely make 6 selections in the AFL National Draft using picks 25, 35, 37, 42, 60 and 68.

They most likely will also promote a rookie (?Archer) with a later pick filling the 7th spot and freeing up another rookie spot.

I wonder if they will promote a second rookie (?Curren) or make a seventh selection in the draft now that Dawson has quit.

The Saints were contenders during this period and had fairly high finishes. The draft picks reflected this so that even our first round pick was a high number.

Teams that the Saints are being arbitrarily compared with for drafting success often have had much lower picks, giving them a better chance of success.

Sometimes you just have to put you hand up and admit that our drafting has stunk. From 2006 (excluding 2011) the only two potential A-graders we've drafted look like being Steven & McEvoy. We completely butchered a superdraft in 2008 & a decent draft in 2009.

Looking at Geelong's and Collingwood's lists it's clear that good drafting is key, and that it can be done without early picks. We should never use having high picks as an excuse for bad drafting! Every year some good players are taken later in the draft - we just need to work harder and finding them and developing them.

I deliberately choose those 3 teams to compare it to as they have all won a premiership & been up at same mark as us over the period. If you go and compare it to Richmond or Port then thats when you dont get the fair comparison.

There is no doubt that our drafting in the second half of the last decade has been very poor. The core of the team remains the guys drafted in the first half of the decade with too few helpers since.

When reviewing St kilda's drafting from 2006 to 2009 I do think people have lumped in 2007 as poor. This l feel is unfair. If you look at that draft and compare it to Geelong's, who have two players remaining ( Simpson and Taylor) and then Colling wood who have none. St Kilda by comparison have McEvoy pick 9 and Steven pick 42.
On my assessment I believe St Kilda is at least equal to Geelong and has beatin Collingwood.

It's also unfair considering we've effectively gutted the club during that time (Butterrs ticket v Footy First ticket) which has seen a pretty massive fundamental shift as far as AFL clubs go, whilst Geelong & Collingwood have remained rather static in this regard.

Effectively it's hard to both recruit and keep kids at the club when you're spending nothing on the footy department compared to 4 years later expanding spending by 300% into the department and moving into multimillion dollar facilities. It's night and day stuff.

And if we fast forward to the 2010 draft and look at Collingwood, who have already delisted, Farmer and Stubbs.
I think there is some chance St Kilda's group of, Cripps, Crocker, Ledger and Siposs will at least match, Fasolo, Ugle and Seedsman.
