Collingwood are not the drafting guru's by any shot, but they had a couple of good years that really set them up.
StKilda managed to have a bad year when most other teams found gold, and yeah McEvoy is good, but your first round pick should be good most years.
Steven is the rare bit of gold among the scrap metal.

So, the 2007 draft was ok?
I like to think that last years draft was the turning point for us. I can see Ledger, Cripps and Sippos all becoming great players for us and I hope this year brings similar results.

Yes, last year was a positive. I actually haven't given up on Stanley, Simpkin and Winmar. Were I differ from a lot of people is Stanley.
Big men take time. Look at West from Geelong. Were was he last year? Drafted in 2006. Not getting a regular and struggling when he did get in.
Rhys is a ruckmen. Not a full-time forward. If anyone watched Sandy play Geelon,g in the VFL this season, they would have seen Stanley v Vardy.
It was a good battle. They both looked good.

I still think that Lion did a pretty good job of using top up players to replace a lot of average to good players over a very short period of time.
He was certainly a sucess in that aspect.
However time has proven that the young players selected in those drafts were below standard, or were not developed properly ( Howard started to play well in the same team when he was delisted ).
The recycled GOP's should have been a stop gap measure but the drafting has failed us.

Mate, you've got me, with generalizations like, " those drafts failed us". I suppose, I'll just sit back and enjoy watching, McEvoy, Steven, Stanley, Simpkin, Winmar, Cripps, Crocker, Ledger and Siposs play.

No look, I'd be pissed if we'de lost any of those youve listed, but you had to be talented NOT to pick some good players in the 2008 draft , and where is our first round pick.

Our first round pick is going to Adelaide. Now maybe the saints are right and he is no good. Adelaide see something in him. Are they right? Time will tell.
Our next pick in that draft was 47. Now, maybe Stanley is no good. A 200cm quick ruckmen. Maybe?? What if he is a beauty? As I have said previously too early. The players taken after him in that draft, that are any good, are, Taylor Hunt ( 182cm half back), Savage( 185cm approx) outside skillful. I may have missed one extra. But if you look at 08, after pick 47, there wasn't much left.

I'm happy enough with Stanley. In general I'd say I'm happier with our late picks than our early picks. I sometimes wonder if its because everyone else butted out and let the recruiters do their work. ( Though I believe Brad Howard was a recruiters smokey, and they were bluffed into picking him up second round ).

So 26 players under 24yo (with NO 24 year olds... interesting). There are only 20 players over 24yo.
Of those 20, one is already injured for a fair while. Of the others, a few are clearly depth (Polo, for example), and a few are potentially on a knife-edge, ready to be pushed out of the 22 if they're not careful.
I call "Rebuild". Not crazy rebuild, but yeah, pretty much. The best of the old is still there, and will be the main contributors, but there will be furious competition among the youngees to get a game - the best will rise, the worst will fall.

even if they do decide to do a full-on rebuild, now is the time to do it, with next year's draft set to be a ripper.

Not sure if this is the relevant thread, it concerns the list I guess. I wish we would lock BJ into a four year deal already, the media is going to be excruciating next year with the GWS rumours.

The oldest and most experienced hey. With the rebuilding going on currently this is great. Perfectly timed. We get two more good years out of our stars and two years in some cases three years developing their replacements

It looks like the club have attempted to address a shortage in the 20 to 23 year old age group.
Given that fact you'd have to say we have either drafted poorly or the youth development has not been good enough. I'd say it's a combination of both.
I've never been one to buy into the overall average age of the respective lists though. It's more about the immediate 22 and the players on the fringes of that.
I'd be the second oldest on the list, for the record.

Is Markworth really considered a mature age player? Younger than Crocker and Ledger.
Started feeling old in 2008 when players started being younger than me. Really kicks in when they're younger than my little sister haha.

I look back at previous drafts and shudder.
2004 - 4 selections*, one player left (Gwilt)
2005 - 7 selections, one left (Gilbert)
2006 - 11 selections, 3 left (Armo, CJ, Gears)
2007 - 12 selections, 4 left (Macca, Schneids, Boogie, Jack)
2008 - 14 selections, 3 left (Faz, Rhys, Head)
2009 - 13 selections, 3 left (Cuz, Peakey, Darch)
Thankfully the 2010 crop seems good, but there's a fair bit of pressure on the recruiters and the academy to squeeze some 50 gamers out of the 2011 draftees.
