Re: 2012 St Kilda player list

You have to wonder about Rix.
While I never rated him much, neither did I rate Pattison.
We had two years where Rix wasn't required.
2008 ( played 1 game ) and 2009 ( delisted at the end of 2008)
Then we got Pattison for the 2010 season.

Why not have just kept Rix???

I find all this churning around of mediocre players pretty frustrating.

Re: 2012 St Kilda player list

I find all this churning around of mediocre players pretty frustrating.

Same.

Rix was a 200cm meat-axe that was delisted in the same year that we drafted a reject in Colm Begley - the theory escapes me.

We then pick up Patto who, although being backup to the backup, was quite right in pointing out that adjusting to a Ross Lyon game plan (as a bit-part player) is not an overnight process. With the retirement of King, Gardi on the verge of retirement, and McGrath not working out, it was a strange decision.

Luckily McEvoy has been pretty resilient - if he wasn't we were horribly exposed. This is still an issue, but at least Kosi is now fit and Rhys is less of a praying mantis.

Re: 2012 St Kilda player list

Not sure if this is the relevant thread, it concerns the list I guess. I wish we would lock BJ into a four year deal already, the media is going to be excruciating next year with the GWS rumours.

Or finish last next season and Goddard leaves giving us band 1 compo.

Of course I would prefer him to remain.

To be fair to the Saints' recruiters, I noticed that the Zebs have signed Myke Cook, who was delisted by the Crows after 4 years on the list. Pick 38 in 2007 (noting Chris Mayne at #40 and Jack Steven at #42). Originally from A2R's zone (St Bedes).

Whilst not totally relevant to the thread, Will Johnson seems like he's scoping for a club (might not be at the Zebs).

Alias (Perth) and Cahill (Sturt) have gone home. Seems Vegas will too (Glenelg).

Cook - who will now be playing alongside our guys in the VFL - has played 14 AFL games, which is 14 more than me.

The point is that although we've had some really poor years of drafting, there is the odd gem like Steven - taken as a bottom age player in the same year as Cook (Steven could have played another year of U/18s).

Regards Steven pick 42, well done. I agree the Saints did well there. I think when reviewing drafting the important point is to note what picks the club had. In 2008, which a lot of people seem to forget, the Saints had picks, 13, 47 & 48 and then in the 60's and 70's.
I don't think even the harshes of critics could claim they are blue chip picks. The Saints took Lynch, fail? Well let's see. At least the club got something in return. Then they had to wait 34 picks before their next selection!
As mentioned previously, I haven't given up on Stanley. Now if he turns out a good ruckmen then we are well placed with two young rucks. May I also mention two of the hardest posts to fill. Just ask Hawthorn.
With the next pick Heyne who was taken after him that is a established AFL player?
Taylor Hunt and Shane Savage, looking ok but not established.
Remember the Saints took Simpkin in the rookie draft. Tom has along way to go but if he can establish himself as a regular back and we factor in the Saints were the Saints selections were, then things don't look as bad as some negative people claim. LET'S WAiT AND SEE!!!

Shame for Cook, had a chance but it seems no one on the Adelaide board ever rated him. Guess he got to live the dream 14 times at least though (Was an Adelaide supporter). Will be a decent pick up for the Zebs.

And yeah nice work for once with our recruiters seemingly getting that pick correct!

Well the whole 2007 draft/trade period wasn't too bad. was it? McEvoy and Steven drafted. Traded out of the draft, to get Schiender and Dempster. In my opinion, that's at least three 100 game players plus a handy role player.
Need to be careful here, as it may get too positive and then destroy the myth that the Saints are hopeless at drafting and trading.
But then again, they did play off for two flags and drew one. Lost the other by 12 points against a team that's won three out of five.
How did that happen?
Oh yeah, the papers/journalists tell us,"game plan". Must of been a great game plan as Saints can't draft or trade.
Lyon is a genius!!!

I went back a bit earlier. I picked a random good performing team and compared it to a random poor team and StKilda.

I'm Compared, Richmond , StKilda , Carlton
StKilda's drafting has been better than Richmond, but it seems like that Cats pick up a decent player over and above what StKilda pick up just about every year.

If the life of a good AFL player is 10 years. To get 22 good players, we need to pick up a couple of good players every year.
1 is not enough.

While the cats have been a little bit lucky with F/S they seem to do a good job drafting, and when they trade ( Ottens) they pay good money for a good player, instead of trying to find a bargain in the NQR store.

2004, Saints went with with 3 recyclers McGough and Ackland and Knobel. None were sucessfull. It was a crappy draft but there were still some good players in there if we'd picked more. We did get lucky with Gwilt . McQualter average to say the least.

Cats were ispired to trade their first round pick ( and Moloney) for Ottens.
Their later pick for Prismal gave them a player probably better than McQualter.
Nathan Ablett F/S was OK until he got sick of it.
Their very late pick for the useful but short lived Egan was probably almost as good as StKilda's pick for Gwilt.

Richmond with a plethora of early picks got Deledio pick 1.
But then they got Tambling, Meyer, Pattison and Polo.
Why couldnt we have got Troy Simmonds for Black instead of that stupid 3 way with Fiora. They got the recycled Mark Graham, and Luke McGuane later in the draft.

Geelong : Good, StKilda : Average, Richmond: Extra pathetic.

2005
StKilda , Watts trade. No good. Sam Gilbert , Yep Michael Rix ... better than Ackland
Raymond and Sweeney, misses.

Cats: Varco , West and Stokes probably a good outcome , only missing with Gamble
Richmond.: Struck out.
Geelong: Good, StKilda: Average, Richmond: Very Poor.

StKilda : Only really Armitage, Birss trade didnt work out. We redrafted Ferguson ( could have got Jacobs for the ruck ).

Cats: Selwood, Djerkurra gave a late trade pick in 2010. Hawkins (lucky F/S), Hogan (still question Marks ).
Richmond: Jack R = Good, Edwards OK ish, Collins became Grigg.

StKilda Poor, Cats Average, Richmond Good.

2007:
StKilda Dempster Schnieder trade = Good. King Trade =Good.
Ben McEvoy Good. Jack Steven=Good. Fraser Gehrig????

Cats: Harry Taylor, Dawson Simpson pretty good.
Tigers: Mc Mahon ??? Cotchin, Rance, OK but with all their early picks they hardly did better than Geelong.

StKilda Good, Cats Very Good, Tigers Good.

2008:
StKilda Farren Ray trade OK.
Tom Lynch, Stanley Heyne , well they are all still on lists I suppose.

Cats: Mitch Brown, Motlop, Hunt. Pretty good again.

TIgers: Vickery OK , but otherwise an ordinary lot.
StKilda Poor, Cats Good, Tigers, Poor.

Let me state, Geelong's drafting is second to none. They are outstanding but if the Saints didn't fair better than them in 2007, I'll barrack for Collingwood. Seriously, do you believe if the Saints said to the Cats, "We will give you, McEvoy, Steven and Schiender for Taylor and Dawson Simpson", that they wouldn't seriously consider this.
Would you trade those players for Taylor and Simpson? Is Dawson Simpson good?

My error , but they were still good that year.
My point is they seem to pick up a couple of AFL level players each year.

My error , but they were still good that year.

Note they rookied Mummy in 2007, which has given them Mitch Duncan (2009). Very good.

How about popping into 2009 when they went for Menzel the next choice after the Lovett pick?

Christensen (#40) and Vardy (#42) vs Winmar (#32).

Peake was a good trade, but they went and rookied Pods!

Thanks, appreciate that you can see both sides. You are spot on about Geelong. But I do believe there has been a perception in the footy world that the Saints have been hopeless in the draft and I honestly believe this to be incorrect.
09 was poor from the fact that the Lovett and Jesse Smith gamble didn't work. I don't think anyone one would disagree that both boys could play. Winmar is still a chance and we did get Walsh. Unfortunately, things didn't work out there but once again we got something for him and it helped with this years draft.
What's also forgotten is in, 07,08 and 09 we traded out of the draft. It is only in 10 were we kept our picks and in 11, for the first time in ages, we actually traded to get picks.
Geelong very rarely trade out of a draft. They invariably trade in. now that's a philosophy we need to adopt.
Remember, if you want to accurately review a draft, look at the clubs picks and where they are.

Agree completely.
But I can see why some trades seemed necessary.
Justin Peckett (retired)
Stephen Powell (retired)
Cain Ackland (delisted)
Thompson, Andrew (V+)
Gehrig, Fraser
Hamill, Aaron
Voss, Brett
Harvey, Robert (V+)
Fiora, Aaron ( Replacing Black)

Along with injuries to Maguire and others not long gone ( Aussie Jones), there was a fair whack of the 22 to replace.
The draft from 2003 - 2006 had been no great thing for the Saints either.
We ended up with a lot of plug gap players ( Gardiner, Birss, M Clarke ).
The good trades we got ( Schnieder , King, Gardiner (eventually) Dempster and Ray ) allowed the Saints to have the crack at the flag that they did.

But I cant understand why this approach was perpetuated. We were still mucking round getting Polo and Gamble four years later.

Nexus_Bert is next. ;)

Brooks was ruined by that knee injury, Beetham never wanted it enough, and Lovett was a blunder of the highest order.

Ackland was top ten B&F in 2005, and rightly so, but late in 2005 injured a knee and was never quite as effective. He was clearly an upgrade on Knobel, but we never got really consistent production out of the ruck position after that until King and Gardiner in 2008/2009.

The knee injury is irrelevant, what we paid for Brooks was lunacy. However you slice it, picks 8 AND 34 (later upgraded to 6 and 31 after Carlton's salary cap penalties) for an unblooded ruck who we had overlooked the year before with picks 2, 5 and 13 (he was taken at 15) was dumb at the time and incredibly dumb in hindsight. I still rate it as the worst trade we've ever done.

It's certainly not irrelevant - he was never the same player after the knee injury, so that turns a poor trade into a horrendous one. On the other hand, he may have kicked on without that knee injury, but we'll never know. I suspect trading that much for a player who plays in a position the coach doesn't see as important was foolish, but a fit Brooks and Koschitzke swapping in the ruck and forward could have been something to see.
