Re: Rhan Hooper

Why is it that Hooper plays his best footy when he runs away?

It was an interesting selection by Vossy. There was every reason not to pick him, so they must rate his footballing ability quite highly.

I'm excited at the prospect of him returning to the form he showed in late 2007. An in form Hooper will make a big difference to the side's fortunes.

Livewire small forward Rhan Hooper, who had been challenged by Voss to be more effective in support of twin towers Brown and Daniel Bradshaw, answered his coach's demands with three third-term goals. News filtered through from the Lions'changerooms at half-time that Hooper had again received a fearful serve from Voss, who told him he needed to lift if his side was to revive in the second half.

Tough love working for Brisbane Lions small forward Rhan Hooper
By Laine Clark
March 30, 2009

The tough love approach appears to be working nicely on Brisbane Lions small forward Rhan Hooper.
And just as well - it seems he better get used to it.

Fined a whopping $40,000 for repeated breaches of his player contract in the off-season, a chastened Hooper responded with a match-winning hand in the Lions' round one AFL victory over West Coast.

But instead of a public pat on the back, rookie Lions coach Michael Voss delivered a sobering assessment for the 21-year-old.

"Look, I don't want to sound bad about it but we've played round one - we are about consistency," Voss said.

"There's plenty through history who have played great one game and not been on an AFL list in six weeks' time."

Voss showed he had lost none of his footwork from his playing days, sidestepping every chance to praise Hooper despite his four-goal display.

Hooper was the spark that helped the Lions turn a 38-point second quarter deficit into a nine point win in their season opener at the Gabba.

It capped a remarkable turnaround for the Ipswich youngster.

He was almost sacked in the off-season but instead received the massive fine - and one last chance.

But Voss made it clear Hooper had proved nothing yet.

"Let's be clear - one game does not make a player," he said.

"What one game does is hopefully instil belief that they can do it.

"Now it's about application over a consistent basis week in, week out."

Voss would have been forgiven for giving himself a rap after Hooper's round one heroics.

Voss became Hooper's training partner over the Christmas break in a bid to keep the youngster focussed ahead of the 2009 season.

He made the unusual move after the fourth-year player had gone AWOL in the pre-season for the second time during his time at the Lions.

But when asked if he had gained personal satisfaction from Hooper's form, Voss said: "I get satisfaction out of every single player that gets rewarded for their efforts.

"We spoke about getting more goals out of our small forwards (and) we got a lot more crumbing efforts.

"It was nice to be able to get that off them, not just rely on Browny (Jonathan Brown) and Braddy (Daniel Bradshaw).

"But there was a lot of individuals who contributed to our team effort - Rhan was one of those.

"What we are after is getting effort every single time from everyone, not relying on one or two people."

But Hooper did not have to be told he still had much to prove.

He knocked back the chance to talk up his game against the Eagles, declining all post-match media interview requests.

"Give me two more games," Hooper said.

Re: Rhan Hooper

Really like that stance from Voss, he wasn't going to get a whole lot of praise because of pre season but it really sends a message through to players like TJ and Power to maintain their form and the one's that aren't doing enough to lift or someone else will have their spot.

Re: Rhan Hooper

When you think Voss couldn't do more to prove himself as a tough but fair leader, he comes out with this remarkable stance - and one many, including myself, feel strongly about: one game maketh not the man. Or something along those lines.

One can only hope he has a Brennan-esque breakout season.

Hooper took a major step towards redemption against the Eagles.

Voss and captain Jonathan Brown had gone public in the lead-up to round one with an ultimatum to the side's small forwards to pull their weight.

Hooper responded, providing the spark that led to Brisbane's 47-point turnaround.

In his short career Hooper has kicked four bags of four goals, but only once has he followed up each of those with a significant contribution the following week.

This week's public challenge from Voss is for a repeat dose.

"Look, I don't want to sound bad about it but we've played round one - we are about consistency," Voss said.

"There's plenty through history who have played great one game and not been on an AFL list in six weeks' time."

Daniel Bradshaw backs Rhan Hooper to give Lions goal-scoring edge
Article from:

BRISBANE sharpshooter Daniel Bradshaw last night backed wildcard Rhan Hooper to kick the 40 additional goals likely to be needed to propel the Lions into their first AFL finals series since 2004.
Bradshaw (75 goals) and Lions talisman Jonathan Brown (70) carried Brisbane's goalscoring fortunes on their broad shoulders last season.

But there little else to crow about in front of the posts in 2008, with the now departed Anthony Corrie next best with 21, and Hooper contributing 19.

The lack of six-pointer contributors was a major factor in the Lions' failure to make the top eight for the fourth year in succession.

But a revamped game plan under new coach Michael Voss had Bradshaw confident that Hooper can not only kick another 19, but also the extra 21 that Corrie provided.

"To get about 40 goals a year from Rhan, that would be great," Bradshaw said.

"Our small forwards are probably playing a little bit differently this year, a bit closer to the goal and not so far up the ground, so hopefully the guys like Rhan will have a few more opportunities to jag a few goals.

"We're trying to take it through the middle more and open the forward line up a bit more. We need the small players to be at the feet of the taller guys, so if we don't mark it they're there for the crumbs."

Hooper already has four goals to his name after a brilliant performance in the Lions' nine-point win over West Coast Eagles last Saturday at the Gabba.

His challenge is to back it up tomorrow night against Carlton at Docklands.

"Last week would have been good for his confidence and hopefully he goes into this week ready to go," Bradshaw said.

Hooper did himself no favours by turning up to pre-season training late, copping a $40,000 fine as well as the ire of Lions legend Voss.

But Bradshaw praised the 2005 national draft selection for the way he had applied himself since.

Hooper has been named on the interchange bench for tomorrow night's clash but could yet start in the forward line.

Re: Rhan Hooper

I've been very happy with Hooper's first two games. It's unrealistic to think that he'll get multiple goals every week, but I think he's shown improvement from last year in that he is making more of the opportunities that he's getting. Hopefully he can continue to be a dangerous presence in every game, even if he doesn't always kick a bag. If he can at least get multiples every second week, then it'll be a good return.

I noticed this last year, but more so this year, that Hooper is actually a pretty good mark in a contested situation for someone of his size.

Hooper was unable to take part in a closed training session at the Gabba yesterday but the Lions remain hopeful he will show signs of improvement as the week wears on.

Assistant coach Justin Leppitsch said Hooper would be given until game day to recover.

"He'll have to do a fitness test to be right for Saturday," Leppitsch said.

"Hopefully, he'll get up for Saturday. It is his ankle and it's just a minor roll, so it is one of those things that you tend to wait and see.

"Once the swelling subsides you tend to be all right to run around and play. It is just one of those small tweakers.

"It will be a call made late in the week, maybe on Saturday morning."

BRISBANE Lions small forward Rhan Hooper is a late scratching from tomorrow night's match against the Sydney Swans.

Despite being named in the Lions' 22 on Thursday night, coach Michael Voss confirmed on Friday that Hooper would be replaced by veteran Tim Notting on the bench.

The livewire has kicked six goals in the first two games but has failed to come up from an ankle problem and is expected to miss just one week.

Re: Rhan Hooper

Any idea on Hooper's return? Has he been training with the main group?

Unfortunately, considering Hooper has now missed three weeks, it might be a bit of an ask to bring him straight back in the seniors. We could sure use him against Essendon this week though.

Haven't seen him at training in weeks although there have been a few closed sessions lately and Hoops may have been at those.

Hooper finished with four goals and spent plenty of time on the bench as part of his return from a month out with injury

Selwood’s likely absence may not open the door for goal sneak Rhan Hooper to return, despite his four goal haul in the reserves after a month out with an ankle injury.

Leppitsch said Hooper probably needed more time in the reserves.

“Ideally we would like to keep Rhan going and gaining his fitness for another few weeks,” Leppitsch said.

“He played on the weekend and did okay but as far as playing at his best, as far as running and spreading, he just didn’t have the match fitness on the weekend.”

Re: Rhan Hooper

for someone who has walked out on pre season training, 'Strong Work Ethic' will be exactly what Voss will want to hear. He will get recalled to the seniors on the back of that, rather than any amount of goals kicked.
