Rhan Hooper taking aim at midfield position for Brisbane Lions

RHAN Hooper underlined his value to the Lions with a four-goal return against the Kangaroos but it is the midfield where he hopes his greatest contribution will be made.

Although Hooper has booted 10 goals from only three games this season, he is still an optional extra. Brisbane are a better side when he plays but they have learnt to cover his absence in periods when he is unavailable.

With the over-reliance on Jonathan Brown and Daniel Bradshaw in recent years, Hooper's ability to pop up and contribute multiple goals each time is exactly what coach Michael Voss needs.

But Hooper has revealed a move to the midfield was raised in a frank discussion with Voss at the club's pre-season camp at Couran Cove. Voss was open to the idea and told Hooper if he could prove he had lifted his workrate, he would get a chance.

Then Hooper skipped some compulsory training sessions and was handed a one-month ban from the club, which cost him a fair chunk of the summer training program.

Then when he returned and forced his way into the side for round one, he injured his ankle and was absent for another seven weeks.

"That was one of the goals I set up during the camp at Couran Cove," he said.

"I knew I had to work on my fitness which was going really good until I had that hiccup.

"Obviously that set me back and slowed my push into the midfield, but hopefully if I can continue to get some kilometres into my legs and if that shows up on my GPS readings, they might give me a couple of goes in the midfield towards the end of the season."

Hooper said he had been advised to watch how teammate Simon Black played the game and there had also been the suggestion to work on his upper body strength.

His ankle injury assisted in that regard as the regular running work was replaced by extra weights sessions.

"They talked about trying to get me in there," he said.

"I watch a bit of Blackie and try to study his game, but the main thing is to get my workrate up."

Voss praised four-goal midfielder Rhan Hooper for his effort against North Melbourne, hoping the fleet-footed finisher will do a similar job against a potent Blues midfield led by superstar signing Chris Judd. Hooper has been an enigma at the Lions, yo-yoing in and out of the frame through injury, personal issues and suspension. But his ability to provide a goal-kicking foil to Jonathan Brown and Daniel Bradshaw could be a crucial part of Brisbane's make-up down the stretch.
"Rhan made the most of the opportunities that he had. It was great to see him get the rewards for some of the work he's put in during the past month. That sets him up to hopefully strike a bit of form in coming weeks," Voss said.

QUEENSLAND AFL PLAYER OF THE WEEK – ROUND 10
RHAN HOOPER

Rhan Hooper underlined why he is so important to the Brisbane Lions with an equal career-best return to the senior side on Saturday.

Hooper, in his first AFL game since Round 2, booted four goals in the Lions’ 18-point win over North Melbourne in Round 10 of the Toyota AFL premiership to earn “Queensland AFL Player of the Week” honors.

He had only eight kicks on top of four marks but his impact as a crumbing forward was pivotal to a win which hoisted the Lions to fourth place on the AFL ladder – their highest placing since Round 6, 2007.

His performance certainly vindicated shown in the sometimes wayward 21-year-old, who missed four games with a bad ankle and then was made to play three games in the Velocity Sports Cup before reclaiming his senior spot.

Incredibly, despite playing only three of 10 games, he sits fourth on the Lions’ goal-kicking list with 10 behind Jonathan Brown (31), Daniel Bradshaw (28) and Justin Sherman (15).

Glenorchy's Aaron Joseph continued his fine rookie season by containing Brisbane's Rhan Hooper for the second time this season. In an outstanding display, he kept the dangerous Lion forward to four touches during the Blues' nail-biting win at the Gabba on Saturday night.

Hooper touched the ball six times on the weekend, which continues another worrying trend. Eight of his 12 goals for the season came from two bags of four. His good days are productive but on his off weeks he is barely seen.
The defensive pressure that was a hallmark of his early career is also disappearing.
Port's small defenders, led by ball magnet Danyle Pearce, ran riot on the weekend and that would concern Voss more than Hooper's lack of goals.

Hooper in AFL trade rumours

Former Ipswich Eagles coach Michael Rush believes there’ll be no shortage of suitors if the Lions decide to put Hooper on the table.

His assessment of where he's at:

According to Rush, it’s that inability to push into the forward line for long periods that is holding him back.

“Rhan’s got the potential for it,” he said.

“At the moment he’s got the engine for no more than a five-minute burst.

“It’s up to him whether he wants to do the work to get that extra dimension to his game.”

TROUBLED Brisbane forward Rhan Hooper has almost certainly played his last AFL match for the club with a trade deal soon to be worked out.

Re: Rhan Hooper

That's no surprise about Hooper Grim, however the speculation about Nathan Brown intrigues me. Is he supposed to be coming over as a player or an assistant coach of some sort ?

He'd come fairly cheap either way, I would think.

Gee we'll have half of Richmond soon.....Raines, Tuck, Brown. Can we fit in Schulz as well ?

Rhan, your football was like a **** tease, all flash and little pay off:D:footy:.

Anyway, best of luck Rhan, I hope that you knuckle down at another club and don't end up like a Damien Cupido & Aaron James, and waste your talent.

Hmmm, think the delisting may have had a lot to do with the large salary/minimal impact catergory Rhan falls into.

Actually thought that 2010 was going to be his year with the Lions; a full pre-season coupled with the return of McRae to teach him a few tricks had me thinking he could finally produce :(

Anyway, good luck with whichever club picks you up (unless its Carlton, Collingwood, Essendon, Hawthorn, Port or St.Kilda)

Re: Rhan Hooper

Yep - Swallow's a pretty decent pick up and wouldn't be out of place in our line up. Having said that, the Hooper selection has moved from a punt gone wrong to a reasonable each way bet. Let's hope in two years we'll be discussing it as the roughie of the decade!

Doh!

Looks like he's going to be training with Richmond, as well as a bit of controversy over how much we need to pay him out for next year.

RICHMOND's ambition to add speed to its attack has led it to Rhan Hooper's door, with the former Brisbane small forward to begin pre-season training with the Tigers next week.

Hooper is due in Melbourne today, having spent the week driving south from Queensland where his time with the Lions was officially brought to an end last week in circumstances that appear destined for arbitration or even court.

The 21-year-old was contracted to Brisbane for about $330,000 in 2010 but there is now dispute over how much, if anything, he is entitled to after being delisted last Friday. His manager, Peter Whitehead, said yesterday the matter would be first taken to the AFL's grievance tribunal but stressed Hooper's priority is to start again a once-promising career that petered out this year.

One of the Tigers' many concerns throughout the season has been a lack of ground-level speed in the forward line, something that did not help the side kick goals or bring pressure to the opposition as it was working its way out of defence.
Not sure that Rhan was that much help to us in that area but a change of scenery will hopefully help him mature and become the player that everyone thinks he should have been by now.

"He's young, he's got talent and he's a quick, small forward and we'd like more of that type. But we can't overlook the fact he's been delisted under contract, either."

Indeed.

Best of luck Rhan. I am sure that all of us wish you the best and hope that you get things back on track.

Exhibit H your honour in proof that players have to be massively overpaid to keep them from interstate poachers.

Exactly.

It was a lucrative offer from Terry Wallace's Richmond two years ago that drew the Lions into countering with a $1 million, three-year contract they have now terminated without compensation for the loss of his talent.

I can't remember whether or not they played the "go home" angle given he was drafted locally... although I do seem to remember something about his family having moved to Victoria since then.

He shouldn't be paid out after all the wrong doing he did at the club with walking out, attitude problems, etc. Why should we pay him? What the Lions should've done in January was cancelled his 2010 contract after failing to return to the club fit after his walk out.

All depends on exactly what the terms of his (or the standard) playing contract are. AFLPA would've had a field day at our expense if we had sacked him IMO

I think the only way you can look at this is his contract was a failure, we should budget for paying him out in full and if we are able to successfully argue a smaller pay out it is a small win for us.
