BATTERED Richmond hero Matthew Richardson has little chance of playing against the Brisbane Lions at the MCG on Saturday.

The 34-year-old star forward, who kicked his 800th career goal on Sunday, went into the Sydney clash under a cloud because of a buttock strain but emerged with an unrelated hamstring strain.

Richmond club doctor Greg Hickey said yesterday Richardson had an old problem that had flared. Medical staff have been managing tendinitis in Richardson's hamstring since the start of this season.

"Early in the first quarter against the Swans, Matthew aggravated a long-term niggle in his hamstring origin tendon," Dr Hickey said.

"He will have some scans over the coming week. We will try to settle the pain and he will need to do some strengthening work."

Richardson yesterday told Vega radio he was unlikely to play against Brisbane after pulling up sore.

"It's pretty sore. It's not getting much better, so we will have to see what happens this week, but it might need a week off," Richardson said.

Nathan Brown has overcome a groin injury and is available for selection, while Kane Johnson (knee) is still a month away.

Ben Cousins, Trent Cotchin and Kayne Pettifer all got through their game without a problem for Coburg in the VFL on Saturday.

Looks like Sarge will get his chance.

Re: Richo out for 10 weeks?!

Life after richo begins this week folks. Build a bridge and move on. Let's bring in the schulz and the hughes of the world and get them to step up.

Re: Richo out for 10 weeks?!

Yeah, yeah, I understand all that and it could be a blessing in disguise.. we will find out who can/can't play once and for all.

But, to not have the great man out there for 10 consecutive weeks, especially if we barely win a game, will be devastating.

Re: Richo out for 10 weeks?!

I love the Great Man. I think he is a champion. Our only champion.

However purely froma footy perspective it is good. We have to learn to live without him, to walk alone without the Big Fella to bully some life into them.

We are not finalling this year and the seasons has been put to bed early so We have an opportunity to have a relatively quiet season of list development and team building with the likes of Nahas, Lids, Cotch etc learning to play together while the Blues etc hog the highlights.Good thing.

The fear is that without Richo TW will simply hang onto Browny, Simmo etc in the hope of saving some of his reputation beforehe leaves but the hope is that he dies the right thing by the youngsters in the list.

Re: Richo out for 10 weeks?!

Press conference set for 11am.

Now we'll get to see who wants to step up and take over from the big fella.

Re: Richo out for 10 weeks?!

Its a great loss, you never wanna see champions miss a game, especially 10 game.... Hopefully he plays on one more year.......Good Luck Richo:thumbsu:

Re: Richo out for 10 weeks?!

Im currently at school and when I saw he was out for 10 weeks I think I almost fell off my seat...WTF NOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!! on the brighter side it will really show whether our team will be able to cope without the great man when he is gone.

Re: Richo out for 10 weeks?!

Upgrade Browne, and drop Patto. Time to see what our young talls Putt/Browne/Vickery/Post are capable of. If we get another LTI then uprgrade Gourdis and see what he can do. Playing well in the magoos from reports.

Re: Richo out for 10 weeks?!

given his history of hamstrings (although clean of late) it could be the end... older blokes take longer and if you look at Llyods injury which was similar (although his was ripped off the bone) 10-12 may actually be the season especially if he chooses to continue next year as bringing him back for 4-6 matches might compromise is pre season / future...

either way I love the big Richo man and despite my (forced... i do barrack for the blues after all ;)) hatred for the tigers he is a true champion and hopefully it isnt the end!

Re: Richo out for 10 weeks?!

Pretty sad to see him suffer this sort of injury. Easily one of my favourite players outside the Crows because of the passion he shows for his club. Players like that are invaluable and make the heart and soul of the club. Lets hope that this injury came before the game on the weekend though, because it was really crazy to send him out there the way he was.

I do agree with many people on this board though, your players seem to kick to Richo regardless if he is in a bad position and often ignore better options. This was especially evident on the weekend when they went to him even when he was behind on a lead and had no chance or making ground because of his inability to run at full speed.

I don't get the Nathan Brown hate on this forum though, don't watch you week in week out but I've seen a few of his games and he didn't look uninterested. Maybe moving back into the forward line without Richo will give him one last chance to shine....

Re: Richo out for 10 weeks?!

Hmm - lets see.

Now on 289 games.

Returns in round 16 = 7 games played to end of season = 296

Team gets into the eight - just = 4 more games and The Cho retires after playing his 300th in a winning grand final:D:D

EDIT - That theory's out the window - age had it wrong - according to RFC he's on 282 not 289 like the age said.

Re: Richo out for 10 weeks?!

Brief outline of the press conference

  • Surgery required
  • At least 10-12 weeks
  • Would look to play on next year
  • No relation to buttock injury
  • Sustained in first quarter, but did no more damage by returning to the field on Sunday
  • Has had hamstring tendinitis for about 12 months now - on and off
  • MRI scan last Monday confirmed strain to buttock, improved all week and by mid week was all good

Re: Richo out for 10 weeks?!

Hickey, Cameron in presser.

Richo undergo surgery.. partial tear, 10 - 12 weeks. Round 18 minimum.
The club expecting him to play next year, Richo wants to go on with.
Thought it was aggravation, thats what Richo thought. Already torn the tendon when he went back on.

He came back on because hes had hamstring tendinitis for this season. Had it for 12 months. Like a chronic condition.
Last week he had buttock injury, which he thought was completely different. Last Monday confirmed that it was a buttock injury. Not a very common injury, 15 cases in rugby which none missed matches. He improved in the middle of the week and was fine (buttock).

Then Barlett interrupts mid sentence.

Thats it.
