? Rick MacGowan coming to Hawthorn

Just heard on 5AA he has quit Sturt in SANFL and coming to Hawthorn as an assistant coach. Has ties with Clarko from Central Districts days.

His name was mentioned in some of the other threads on coaching appointments, with one poster very confident that the offer had been made.

Well done to the poster that first mentioned that - can't remember who - but he certianly seems to be a good coach in his own right.

Here is some info posted by an Adelaide supporter on the Todd Viney thread

Rick has a exceptional footy brain
played 250+ games in the sanfl
won premierships as a player
won numerous club B&F awards including in a premiership year
Ricky was Dew's mentor when Dew started playing senior footy at the age of 17
has excellent player development capability
has excellent player management skill
was coached at Central by Clarko
has been senior coach of sturt for past 2 seasons
in 2007 took sturt from bottom to the finals in his first year as coach

In his two years Sturt finished 5th in the finals and then he took them to a prelim this year. Apparently Sturt aren't the most cashed up club and he has had to get the nest out of the resources he had.

Sounds like a great appointment.

Well I was only quoting Dewies CDFC premierships in the sanfl..... but I will never be one to turn down being reminded of Stewies third quarter heroics on the 27th of September 2008.

Yep, Rick was a gun centerman in the SANFL. Was one of those guys who got looked over by AFL scouts for one reason or another and just dominated in one of the feeder leagues during the 90's and early '00s

Never understood why he never considered the draft when he was younger.

That's why I was barracking for the Hawks in the Grand Final. (Plus I was getting sick of Geelong...)

Understatement, it's a sensational appointment.

I should hate MacGowan (Woodville West Torrens Supporter, Centrals have flogged us in 5 Grand Finals), but I don't, the bloke is an absolute champion.

Very intelligent, excellent football brain, loves his players and they love him.

I'm disappointed we didn't grab him at the Crows, he'll do an excellent job for you, and will definitely end up as an AFL Coach.
