RT was the best choice at pick 2.
He can be a cross between Tom Lynch and Dean Cox. He could be the hardest to stop key forward in the game.
McDonald will be more like a Jack Gunston.

Would take RT all day.

Honestly, this is arguably the most important development project in the history of our club. I have faith this selection pays off, but it's a riskier selection than, say, McDonald

Like I said though, upside is MASSIVE

He's struggled to stay healthy which could impact his athleticism in the long term (and noting in recent history, key forwards have struggled with durability), and I don't think the contested marking will hold up at the next level, not without something changing through gym work.

I do reckon he has a very high ceiling, seeing if he can get his body sorted and develop some explosiveness in his leap, the world is his oyster with that profile. That is not a sentence that gives me much solace at this point in time though.
He's just turned 18, weighs 100kgs and is 200cm tall.
He's growing into that body of his, give the kid a break. We'll have him for 10 years or more but he needs some time.
In the right program he'll thrive.
Of course he will hit the gym and by 21 you won't recognize his body shape from the one he has now.
What you should be excited about is his balance and second efforts. He has pace and a great work rate and is a lovely mark.
That's why he got chosen, Riley has all the tools, good pick.

Looked at his highlights again, that smooth silky pass through the corridor at 1.18 and the way he receives a handball receive at 1.48 and goals, are NOT attributes of most ruckmen.

Im used to seeing awkard kicks off the boot and there is at most and only two ruckmen (NicNat and Grundy) I would handball to in a chain to setup a goal for them to run into.

That Unofficial rule of not hand balling to an immobile ruckman does not apply here.

The beauty of this kid, is that he is a project in the making, there is no rush or urgency. We are a bottom 4 side in 2021, we have time to guide him and develop at his pace, be it fast or slow.

Wanted an elite mid with pace, seems odd with all our weaknesses we pick a guy who played ruck all season, the one position we actually have covered with our reigning BnF.

Heartened somewhat by the comments he will be played as a kpf.

Oh well, I wish him all the best as he develops into an elite forward.

A ruckman that plays like a mid? Dean Cox was a brilliant ruckman like that for a very long time. Would be good if he hit that height.

And that goal was on the left snapping across his body and he kicked a similar goal later. Given North selected Philips which was consider a "shock" selection, they might have been always after Thilthrope if we didn't select him with our pick or got news that McDonald was a huge flight risk which we also noticed.

Ogilvie called Thilthorpe the best South Australian player over the last three years.

That would put him ahead of all the SA talent (Luko, Rankine, Rozee) in the 2018 draft in his eyes

I'm pretty sure he was referring to this draft class over the last three years. Meaning he's always been the best among his peers, and hasn't just got there recently. I don't think it was a comparison to other years' draftees. I mean, if he is better than the 2018 class then he's the best for a lot more than just 3 years because that was the best for quite some time. I don't think that's what he meant.

We dodged a bullet by not trading Grundy. ROB is one of the best rucks in the league. Pretty disrespectful to our club champion.

Yep, recruiting Grundy would have torpedoed our rebuild before it even got started. ROB has developed into an excellent ruckman. I don't know what kind of money he's on, but my guess would be mid-range? In terms of output per dollar I doubt there's a better ruckman in the league right now.

I reckon you’ve picked a beauty here. Will pair with O’Brien wonderfully.

He’s like a more athletic Tom Boyd. Kinda. Great pace, great mark, can ruck for 20-30% of the game, and best of all he’s loyal as they come.

Unique player with a high floor and a higher ceiling.

Don't get me wrong, I get why we picked Riley and really, it's certainly realistic with his tools that he could be the best player in this draft (and potentially even the best player from South Australia in recent times).

If this is pick 9, I am over the moon excited with this pick, however I just don't see a solid everyday player if things go wrong and that lack of a fallback with pick 1 has me worried.

Mind you, I suppose that complaint could be tied to every likely pick 1 this year so it could certainly be some level of unrealistic expectations.

I think picking a 200cm ruckman who can move like that is am easy decision every year if they fill out properly and stay injury free, players like that are generational and can take an ordinary side and make them a premiership contender.

The risk with this pick is that oversized juniors frequently struggle to keep their bodies right thru their early AFL careers, and it's very easy to do an accidental knee as a young ruckman, which as Kreuzer and NicNat have shown is usually a recurring concern.

Having re-watched his highlights, I have managed to convince myself that this was the pick other clubs would have made if we didn't, but I'm still disappointed Hollands landed up at the GC, which is a waste of a good player.

Anyone who thinks he's done lumbering dinosaur has rocks in their head. Looks a special talent.

Watching his highlights now as OUR player, I can see why the Crows liked and picked him. Just like how the Eagles took NicNat at pick 2, years ago.

In fact NicNat would have gone at 1 IMO, if he was Victorian.

Given his age, he is going to add a lot of muscle to his frame, that is only going to make him superior aerially to outbody and outmark opponents.
