Toast Riley "Timo" Bonner

Good effort to play the game out as well as he did. Cops a lot of criticism for being soft but he deserves credit for toughing it out yesterday.

100% agree
Plenty of 'better' players (from all teams) would have gone off the ground.
Has to dispel any 'soft' criticism

Port Adelaide defender Riley Bonner has opened up on the off-season that saw his name linked to a move to North Melbourne, with the 25-year-old deciding not to "take any notice" of the speculation and "outside noise". Bonner, who was contacted for 2023, was tied into trade rumours around Jason Horne-Francis' move to Alberton after the former No.1 requested a trade to Port Adelaide at the end of last season.

To secure Horne-Francis, the Power was required to fork up a substantial trade package, with many believing a player might be needed to sweeten the deal and satisfy the rebuilding Roos. Instead, Port Adelaide handed over Picks 8, 43, 53, 57 as well as future 1st, future 2nd and future 3rd selections in a four-way trade that also involved GWS and West Coast.

Along with the arrival of Horne-Francis would be the acquisition of Junior Rioli from the Eagles, with the Power coming away big winners from the negotiations in hitting two birds with one stone. But in the lead-up to an agreed deal, Bonner's name was linked to an Arden Street switch with reports suggesting the Power were open to trading their half-back.

Speaking to News Corp, Bonner said the speculation surrounding his future wasn't a distraction, with the Goodwood product's priorities also lying with Port Adelaide. "We know what footy is like these days, it's a bit of a business," Bonner said."People are looking to move or come back home like the two boys we picked up. "But my sole focus was to stay in Adelaide and play for Port Adelaide in 2023 so speculation, rumours, that's all outside noise and my focus was to get my body right and come back and hit the ground running in pre-season.

"I guess seeing your name in the media it is either a good thing or a bad thing but I didn't really take any notice of it. "If it was to happen it would have had to come through my manager and myself and I didn't hear any noise or anything like that. "It is a good feeling, knowing that you are wanted and needed in the team I guess."

Bonner is crucial to our success this year. He offers a point of difference to our other half backs (Houston, Burton, Farrel etc.) in that he actually takes the game on with line breaking run. For all the "good kicks" we have in our backline they only ever seem to go long and down the line to a contest.

Surely spends more time on the wing with Amon gone?

I still remember Bonner against the saints in China in the half forward role- he looked an absolute star in that role and hasn’t been played there since. Think he and Farrell should swap permanently now seeing how Farrell did in the backlines towards the end of the year.

I recall that as Bonner kicking 3 from half back flank. Not sure where the half forward part comes from?

I'm glad we didn't trade a player, especially one who expressed no desire to leave in that trade.

Especially one who wasn't having issues already at the club. So it's unlike Wingard/Ladhams.

Only need to look at a club like Hawthorn, so called family club, that has absolutely torched itself from within with pushing out players like Burton too. Horrible path to go on. Look what an absolute mess they are now. Where as Geelong has kept on keeping on....

I don't see any benefit in doing such a move. There has to be some level of both involved.

He kicked 2, if not all 3, goals from outside 50m - including one on his non-preferred (right) foot.

Think he just drifted down the field and let fly with a few pings at the woodwork, and it may hav looked like they had moved him forward.

He’s a good player but not crucial and not a “point of difference.” He is virtually the same player as Farrell and Sinn - a running half back/wing with questionable one-on-one defensive traits, who can play half forward and who has a good, dominant left foot. You could probably add Jackson to that list too.

Will be like amon.

A nice player to have but would be quickly forgotten about due to the vanilla nature of our gameplan that extracts very little from our wingers.

Not since peak Polly have we had oppositions be concerned about our wingers

I am happy to retain Riley Bonner just as I would have been happy to trade him if he was willing to move on and the price was right. He wasn't and it wasn't so he stays put. This is a big year for Bonner as there are a few slots up for grabs, I dare say we will attempt to re sign Riley at some stage this year as he will be a restricted free agent at the end of 2023.
