Player Watch #?: River Stevens - North Melbourne has nominated him under the F/S rules

I'm not expecting River or any of our draftees to play AFL footy and that's how it should be.
That's Konstanty, RHJ, Payne and Harvey'v potential domain who might be more ready.
River's got his limitations, as did Arch, but I wouldn't count him out given the character of his old man.
There's a famous quote from NBA coach Rudy Tomjanovich that says "don't ever underestimate the heart of a champion".
River might not make it, but I like his courage, competitiveness, workrate and ability to hit targets by foot.
I think that's worth a punt on for a late ND or rookie pick given who we've taken recently.
If they don't select him then so be it. Hopefully they at least give him a run in the VFL team.
Yeah - has some really good traits that you'd think will suit AFL. Needs to be in the system for two years.

WT on River: "No commitment but River's had a pretty under-rated year. He plays a very team first game, he's a half-forward predominately, he covers an enormous amount of ground, he's only light, he has a real crack, he plays to win, think he's going to develop well."

Compared to his dad:

"He's got a fair way to go, he's made of the right stuff River, he'll come in , where ever he goes, and train really hard, and put his head down, he's a no fuss sort of kid"

Rookie selection sounds good.

Was he at the combine GR?

We’d pass on our (4th) last ND spot to get an extra rookie spot instead
And what happens if we pass with our last pick P86. But West Coast select him at P87?

Do we lose him, or do we then have to take him as our first rookie spot.

And what are the benefits taking him in the rookie and not the ND?

Benefit is we don’t have to lock him in for 2 years can just do 1

And honestly I have no issue if another club takes him he is very speculative

If west coast picked him at 86, they get him. Seems the chance we’re willing to take.

If he gets through, we don’t have to take him at the rookie draft, he gets auto-listed as a Cat A rookie.

Benefit of the rookie draft is list spot flexibility, as he would be on a 1 year contract vs 2 year from national draft.

Just on the passing of the previous pick, we can still match if he did get a bid. The Bombers did this two years ago with one of their prospects after passing with their previous pick.
