Not sure why so many are giving up on a possible win, while we are non favourites, doesn't mean a win would be a shock

I think having unrealistic expectations is a primary sauce ( sic) of irrational angst post match.
We are going into the match with:

1. blokes who wouldn't get a game if Martin/Williams/McGovern were available
2. playing against a seasoned and experienced well drilled side who dont have to think too much about where they should be at any given time in any given situaiton around the ground- which makes them react faster and easier
3. mismatches everywhere on the ground in terms of ability in key areas
4, fitness issues with Weitering/Casboult and McKay - all three absolutely crucial to key match ups.

'giving up' isn't my mindset - realism is. If we manage to pull a win out of this - it would be fantastic. if we can stay close to them for most of the game- again - fantastic. if they jump us easily and then coast for a typical win - well we have better players to look forward to getting back on the park next week.

This is an important game for fringe players to show what they can do and maybe get re-rated - but re-rating works both ways- there are blokes not playing and available today who I would trust in contests much more than a few selected that is all I will say about the selection 'stuff' going on.

Clearly Teague has a plan in place for this game and I look forward to seeing what it is - given his selections.

Realism also tells me that we are underdogs for the exact things you have highlighted.

If Teague has learnt anything from last year, it is to combat our greatest weakness, lapses that allowed sides to get a run-on, yet we never really had a blowout loss.

if we get within four goals I’ll be very surprised..... if Levi is a late out, the ruck line is decimated.

Let's remain positive

Games aren't won or lost around a player or 2

ok I’m positive that we won’t get within four goals.

I'm really excited for tonight's match, sometime's we can lose focus on who's not in the team but I think we've got quite a balanced side which will give provide a good showing.

We've got decent mix of role players such as Newnes, JSOS & Plow that are important to our structure, but we also have a fair few players who can create some energy which could give us a point of difference from previous years, I think that guys like Willo, Saad, Fish, Fog & Dow will all have a moment tonight that will ignite us.

We don't need to beat Richmond at their game, we just need to make sure that we get our game going and be switched on from the first bounce.

I'm interested on peoples thoughts regarding match ups, in previous years Weits has done the job on Lynch but Riewoldt has got off the chain against Jones. Do we look to switch that up this year?

Looking forward to see if Fishers hot form continues, a real asset if he can consistently have impact from his position. Would like to see harry get off to a good start this year and kick a bag of 4. And want to see some 4 qtr efforts from Dow, LOB, Willo etc, the next crop
Have Fish, Fog or Hazza down for 1st goal.

Im pretty comfortable with the team. Very blue collar, based upon work effort and consistency.
Hopefully back to normal quarters, Tiges having a shorter pre-season and hopefully still a hangover, we may be able to outwork as the game goes on.

myblueroan I share your sentiment of course.

however- when faced with a classier outfit - the best way to counter it is to deprive them of time and space and confidence. That means tackling hard and often and making the most of the forward entries to add more pressure. We have the blokes to play this game style and beat them - a few happen to be unavailable for duty on this day unfortunately.

simple as that.

I just hope the side makes Richmond 'earn' their win tonight - and that means being close if not ahead of them at 3/4Q time.
Stuff that.
I want us to smash 'em 4x4.
Leave 'em bewildered and chewed up with their stripes in disarray.
Hard to find footage of CaptainCarlton doing this...but you get the gist. Us V Dusty.

Richmond are system based, they run hard, pressure & defend well both individually and as a team, use the ball well and always do the 1%ers.

Very minimal 1on1 battles will impact the result too match unless Dusty or Cripps have outstanding matches.
TBH this is what 'worries' me about Richmond.

I dont think their team is bursting with stars on every line but they have had a great run of recent success.

This means the systems in place and execution of game plan is their strength and they can stay at the top end of the ladder for a long time.

If you rely on stars you fade as they do. If you rely on system and game plan your opportunity is much longer.

Thats a mean cat ...

Completely understand where you're coming from here mate but I have a slightly different take, hardness at the man & ball shouldn't be something that you pick & choose dependent on who the opponent is, if you're going to batter Mills, you'd better be prepared to go equally hard against JPK, Parker etc.
As a side, we've got to reach the point where playing with intent is the expectation, being able to point to isolated incidents over the year where we bullied soft targets isn't good enough and has been one of a few issues within our footy club for some time.
Clubs that have achieved success and I'm thinking Hawks, Swans, Tigers & Cats here, wouldn't be patting themselves on the back for roughing up a Heppell, a Mills or a really green GWS side.
Much the same as in Rugby where the big fellas will run at the play makers to wear them down a bit of bastardry will always remain in the game, it's the consistency of effort that is key IMO.
Fair call. I'd suggest it would be incumbent upon the Swans to protect their young star rather than us choosing another player to target. Things like the Mills incident have always happened to test youngsters. Remember the unsociable Hawks? They did these types of things regularly.

I don’t think you should be allowed to touch a player unless in the play to bring us inline with all major, mature sporting codes around the world
If you saw the same actions in any other code it would be vilified as the puerile act of meathead stupidity it is
It sends a terrible message to kids and the community.
The sooner our game moves on from senseless acts of intimidation the better
Have you watched much AFL?
