AFL Toast RND 16: Defeated the Swans

Yep. The Happy Clappers are up and about.

It was a good win but we were lucky that they squandered chances and we were surprisingly accurate. Don't forget it was looking like a carbon copy of most of our other games at QT. Then 12-23 scoring shots at 3QT.

Good win, but let's not get carried away with where we are in the context of the season.
10pt win against the swans is worth a good 30 when you factor umps.
ridiculous 2nd 50 was classic Ess v Swans umpiring.

In the 4th I was happy win or loss. I thought we'd done a terrific job all over the ground to that point against quality opposition.

How's DUZZA in the chain for Stringer's goal (half way in...heck watch the whole thing)...
He tackles a big body in McCartin, army rolls as the ball spills out, springs up on running feet to grab the ball before it hits the ground

He's a bit of a conundrum atm, does some really nice work but also not immune from stuffing up big time. Really like him as a player though, never stops, needs to stay in.

Yeah umpiring was shocking as per usual, but hardly surprising.

All I wanted was to see effort and it was there, a stark contrast from earlier in the year. Which is great. Vindication no doubt for the happy clappers it seems but I want to see more efforts like that to see out the year. This week vs Brisbane will be a good test for us.

You’re a bit doom and gloom aren’t you.

One day we will win a flag and you will say, but they had more scoring shots.

I'm genuinely in awe of D'Ambrosio's kicking. He never misses a target - but more than that, in his third game, we are regularly going to him to pull off game-breaking kicks. Every single time he gets the ball I look to see who he is kicking to, and a few times today I thought "man. He's shanked that". But then inevitably it hits one of our players that I hadn't even seen. Just genuinely unbelievable in how good his vision and capacity to pull it off, really is.
Dare I say it - reminds me of Mark Mercuri (yes, I know it’s only early days but no harm in dreaming….)

What?

They weren't efficient in front of goal was the obvious point. Not sure if we'll be afforded that luxury regularly.
But going by your logic, we would have won against Brisbane and Collingwood, plus been close in games against Carlton, Port and West Coast yeah?

How many scores did they create from our direct turnovers entering 50 ?
Swings and roundabouts . We do not turn it over they do not score. Same theory.

Except we dominated possession, clearances, contested possessions (46-26 in the last quarter!) and the midfield battle after QT. They had a run of 8 behinds in the 3rd quarter (some of which were difficult shots at goal). If they get a goal instead of behinds, then the ball goes back to the middle where we had a 50-50 chance of going forward. Sydney would then not have dominated the territory like they did in the 3rd quarter, which means they wouldn't have had that many scoring shots.

Stats alone doesn't provide any context. Otherwise people would have assumed we were better than Brisbane in round 2 given we had more scoring shots and inside 50s.

Exactly. The pressure lead to a lot of those missed shots at goal.

One thing that does shit me is after the year we have had, when we all know it’s been shithouse, we finally have a glimmer of hope. It was a gutsy, hard fought win.

Yet, I come on here and we have a few people say “hang on, we are still shit, don’t forget that.”

There has been 11 weeks where that has been said and then some. Just let us have it.

We were lucky not to be down by 7 goals about 8 minutes into the second quarter but from then onwards can anyone honestly tell me you ever thought 'holy s**t, we're lucky the swans aren't kicking straight'

They only had 3 misses from then on that you would expect them to kick, every other point was either from outside 50, on the boundary line & contested kicks/snaps around the body.

It's not like they were transitioning the ball uncontested then hitting their forwards lace out 30 metres out directly in front of goals and missing.

Our equivalent was kicking them out on the full (3?) or landing 50cm from the behind post and bouncing out of bounds (2?) which resulted in the grand total of 0 points/scoring shots.

The game changed when our structure changed and the swans 'inaccuracy' didn't play any role in the outcome of the game.

... unless any team thinks you only need to lead comfortably after a quarter and a bit to guarantee a win...well they definitely blew it then. 😲

Worth pointing out that the midfield trio of Parish (-11), Shiel (-1) and Merrett (-5) all had less of the ball but felt like a much stronger impact on the team.
I couldn't make the game to see off the ball like I usually do but on the several wider shots I noticed all were positioning themselves defensively better around the contest and moving back quicker than usual to impactful spots. The defensive effort was excellent compared to usual. There was a lot more trust in their team mates to get the ball if they stayed defensive and didn't try to do it all themselves. The individual numbers dropped but it was selfless and far better balanced across the midfield.

Merrett talked after the game about the leaders needing to set the example. If he was referring to this as part of his comment then I'm thrilled and want to see it forever more as it would mean the penny has dropped.
