History

We have a 2 all win-loss record which gives this game much importance as only 2 clubs, Port and Freo, have better win loss records against us.

Round 6, 6 May 2012

The Season so far

Both Clubs are well out of contention and are now playing out the season with a view to next year, and pride. GWS started the year brightly with their best win coming in round 6 against the Hawks 108 to 98 off the back of their worst loss which was to West Coast 120 to 33. At one stage 6-2 and more recently 9-6 they looked a real chance to play finals. Tough games in the last 5 rounds and a high entry level for playing finals this year have ended that hope. It ought not be forgotten that the loss of Mumford in Round 11 cost them greatly in “stand up” power on the footy field. In round 8 Mummy had 47 hit outs to Jacobs 25. In round 10 he had 51 to Martin’s 38.

Our season to date does not need summarising in more than one word – disaster.

Last Time

We were unceremoniously belted (see above). In the third quarter, our best, we kicked 4.1 to their 8.5. Our season was already over as we were coming into the match on 1 win, 6 losses. We were still missing Kreuzer and Cripps was out but Juddy, Murphy, Gibbs, Thomas, White, Armfield and Yarran (17 disposals, 5 marks, 1 goal) all played. Mummy had a picnic with 47 hitouts to Wood’s 23 and Coniglio, Treloar, Shiels, Ward and Greene feasted.

Pre-game form

We come off an encouraging win in a meaningless game against a hapless and lethargic Melbourne. Already down in the midfield with the loss to injury of Judd, Gibbs and Graham (a rare “find” in this horror season) we have now lost (surely) our captain who has been in fantastic form, certainly since the change of coaches. Our injuries have even affected “depth” players like Thomas, Army, White, Holman, Sheehan, Byrne and Warnock. And then there are the players who aren’t playing – Yarran and Henderson.

GWS are missing not only Mummy but also their captain, Davis, whose absence in large parts of the second half of the season has no doubt contributed to the loss of muscle for GWS. Shiels is another important out with 5 30 plus possession games in the first 15 rounds and since out injured. Buntine, Smith and Scully round out their losses to injury. After running Sydney close to lose 90 to 111 in round 3, last week, with finals still a remote possibility, they were completely uncompetitive to lose 44 to 133.

Expected Teams

There is no point “playing the kids”. We are already giving games to players unlikely to escape delisting (Ellard, Dick, Watson) and giving games to kids who aren’t ready will only spoil rather than enhance progress given how thin the team is. We must replace Murphy (Holman or Smith in?). If Caz is fit he should come in for Menzel, who either isn’t fit – shoulder problems – or has a touch of Hendo virus.

FB: Docherty, Jamison, Buckley

HB: Simpson, Rowe, Tuohy

C: Curnow, Cripps, Bell

HF: Boekhurst, Watson, Everitt

FF: Walker, Caz, Tutt

Ruck: Kreuzer, Carrazzo, Whiley

I/C: Ellard, Holman, Jaksch, Dick(S)

GWS

It is very hard to predict their side. Players that may have been carrying niggles might have corrective surgery now finals are out of reach. Presumably some of their team who have been playing all year are a bit cooked and could do with a refresh. News is their first round pick in last year’s draft, Pickett, has done enough in past weeks to earn selection as a small forward. Their team last week was:

FB: Tommy Bugg, Aidan Corr, Ryan Griffen
HB: Zac Williams, Joel Patfull, Heath Shaw
C: Nathan Wilson, Adam Treloar, Josh Kelly
HF: Rhys Palmer, Andrew Phillips, Cam McCarthy
FF: Will Hoskin-Elliott, Jeremy Cameron, Jonny Patton
R: Rory Lobb, Toby Greene, Lachie Whitfield
Interchange: Stephen Coniglio, Caleb Marchbank, Callan Ward, Nick Haynes

Match-ups

Kreuzer, Rowe and Caz will be too much for Phillips and Lobb. The spread and carry of the GWS midfield should be too much for Cripps, Carrots and Curnow with support from Bell, Tutt and Whiley. Any of Cameron (Jammo), Patton (Rowe) or McCarthy (Jaksch) are better than Caz (Patful) and Watson (Corr) among the tall forwards.

Prediction

You would not be informed to know my prediction. I have barely got a Carlton game right this year. I thought we would beat Brisbane and thought we would be badly beaten by Melbourne. Given our outs and lack of depth I can’t see us winning 2 weeks in a row. GWS to win by 17 points.

Bit too early to say, but I'm getting it out of the way.

IN - Liam Jones (Ugh!), Blaine Johnson, Tom Fields, Nick Holman / Dennis Armfield

OUT - Marc Murphy (Shoulder), Troy Menzel (Shoulder), Kristian Jaksch (Ankle), David Ellard (Omitted)

FB - Tom Fields, Sam Rowe, Matthew Dick
HB - Kristian Jaksch, Zach Tuohy, Dylan Buckley
C - Kade Simpson, Mark Whiley, Andrew Carrazzo
HF - Blaine Johnson, Matthew Watson, Blaine Boekhorst
FF - Andrejs Everitt, Liam Jones, Andrew Walker
R - Matthew Kreuzer, Ed Curnow, Patrick Cripps
I - Tom Bell, Sam Docherty, Nick Holman / Dennis Armfield
S - Jason Tutt

Murphy - Out for the remaining 2 matches.
Menzel - Minor AC joint, no use in risking him now.
Jaksch - Out for the remaining 2 matches.
Ellard - Fresh as a sub, but again, there is no point in persisting with him.

Kreuzer should be fine for next week.
If Armfield does not return this week, then bring back Holman.

I'm happy for Yaz to play to make doubly sure he wants to leave or we want to move him on. Seeing him having a laugh with Betsy today made me a bit more optimistic that he might want to stay.

Ellard - Fresh as a sub, but again, there is no point in persisting with him.

I LOVE BLAINE! So much promise in that game against saints last year. I have real hope in this kid

Great win - instilled a bit of missing pride into this Blues fan.

Round 22:

OUTS: Murph (inj), Jamo (inj), Ellard (omit)
INS: Walsh/Holman, Casboult, Yarran

Give Walsh or Holman another crack, rest Jamo and Murph for the rest of 2015 - no point risking them. Ellard needs to go, also - would rather see Armfield, Holman or Walsh.

Bring Yaz back for the last two games to see if he wants to play for us - worst case he plays terrible and seals his fate. Best case he plays well, helps us compete and he decides to stay. Other option being he plays okay and raises his value a bit for the Hawks/Tigs to take him for fair value.

Yaz is gone. Eddie is trying to get him to Adelaide and Adelaide can have him.

I'm putting my faith in Barker to play the guys who give 2 shits, unchanged line-up for mine (injuries permitting).

Think Tutt deserves to stay on the park after yesterday's game. His run and pace were really important, particularly when he put the afterburners on to get to a contest and help a teammate out. I think there was a few instances where it looked like one of our blokes was going to be left with a 2 on 1 trying to get a loose ball and Tutt came out of nowhere to get a crucial hand in there, tackle or came away with the ball.

His disposal is still a problem. I think he runs himself into trouble a little bit by getting there so quick that he becomes a bail-out option but isn't in a good spot. Ends up needing to kick around the corner or along the boundary and has trouble hitting a target. Kind of a double-edged sword with Tutt.

Could be. In yesterday's game there were a couple of occasions where he missed a target by foot when he really should have hit them. The pressure was on, but not that much. Not sure if I would rather it be a composure issue or a skills one lol

was at this game last year. As a canberra based fan its always one i go to. Murphy was a late out in the warm up last year and it killed us.
Another quality post from Canberra :thumbsu::D

Whenever he gets the ball the eyes go real wide, and he looks like he's about to poop himself.

Also seems to cause issues with picking up ground balls or receiving handballs.

Can't see anyone worth giving his spot to at this point of the season though, so let him play it out. Next year would like to see him replaced by a genuine small forward (ala Jack Lonie from St Kilda, slotted straight in and did OK).
