The Season so far
Both Clubs are well out of contention and are now playing out the season with a view to next year, and pride. GWS started the year brightly with their best win coming in round 6 against the Hawks 108 to 98 off the back of their worst loss which was to West Coast 120 to 33. At one stage 6-2 and more recently 9-6 they looked a real chance to play finals. Tough games in the last 5 rounds and a high entry level for playing finals this year have ended that hope. It ought not be forgotten that the loss of Mumford in Round 11 cost them greatly in “stand up” power on the footy field. In round 8 Mummy had 47 hit outs to Jacobs 25. In round 10 he had 51 to Martin’s 38.
Our season to date does not need summarising in more than one word – disaster.
Last Time
We were unceremoniously belted (see above). In the third quarter, our best, we kicked 4.1 to their 8.5. Our season was already over as we were coming into the match on 1 win, 6 losses. We were still missing Kreuzer and Cripps was out but Juddy, Murphy, Gibbs, Thomas, White, Armfield and Yarran (17 disposals, 5 marks, 1 goal) all played. Mummy had a picnic with 47 hitouts to Wood’s 23 and Coniglio, Treloar, Shiels, Ward and Greene feasted.
Pre-game form
We come off an encouraging win in a meaningless game against a hapless and lethargic Melbourne. Already down in the midfield with the loss to injury of Judd, Gibbs and Graham (a rare “find” in this horror season) we have now lost (surely) our captain who has been in fantastic form, certainly since the change of coaches. Our injuries have even affected “depth” players like Thomas, Army, White, Holman, Sheehan, Byrne and Warnock. And then there are the players who aren’t playing – Yarran and Henderson.
GWS are missing not only Mummy but also their captain, Davis, whose absence in large parts of the second half of the season has no doubt contributed to the loss of muscle for GWS. Shiels is another important out with 5 30 plus possession games in the first 15 rounds and since out injured. Buntine, Smith and Scully round out their losses to injury. After running Sydney close to lose 90 to 111 in round 3, last week, with finals still a remote possibility, they were completely uncompetitive to lose 44 to 133.
Expected Teams
There is no point “playing the kids”. We are already giving games to players unlikely to escape delisting (Ellard, Dick, Watson) and giving games to kids who aren’t ready will only spoil rather than enhance progress given how thin the team is. We must replace Murphy (Holman or Smith in?). If Caz is fit he should come in for Menzel, who either isn’t fit – shoulder problems – or has a touch of Hendo virus.
FB: Docherty, Jamison, Buckley
HB: Simpson, Rowe, Tuohy
C: Curnow, Cripps, Bell
HF: Boekhurst, Watson, Everitt
FF: Walker, Caz, Tutt
Ruck: Kreuzer, Carrazzo, Whiley
I/C: Ellard, Holman, Jaksch, Dick(S)
GWS
It is very hard to predict their side. Players that may have been carrying niggles might have corrective surgery now finals are out of reach. Presumably some of their team who have been playing all year are a bit cooked and could do with a refresh. News is their first round pick in last year’s draft, Pickett, has done enough in past weeks to earn selection as a small forward. Their team last week was:
FB: Tommy Bugg, Aidan Corr, Ryan Griffen
HB: Zac Williams, Joel Patfull, Heath Shaw
C: Nathan Wilson, Adam Treloar, Josh Kelly
HF: Rhys Palmer, Andrew Phillips, Cam McCarthy
FF: Will Hoskin-Elliott, Jeremy Cameron, Jonny Patton
R: Rory Lobb, Toby Greene, Lachie Whitfield
Interchange: Stephen Coniglio, Caleb Marchbank, Callan Ward, Nick Haynes
Match-ups
Kreuzer, Rowe and Caz will be too much for Phillips and Lobb. The spread and carry of the GWS midfield should be too much for Cripps, Carrots and Curnow with support from Bell, Tutt and Whiley. Any of Cameron (Jammo), Patton (Rowe) or McCarthy (Jaksch) are better than Caz (Patful) and Watson (Corr) among the tall forwards.
Prediction
You would not be informed to know my prediction. I have barely got a Carlton game right this year. I thought we would beat Brisbane and thought we would be badly beaten by Melbourne. Given our outs and lack of depth I can’t see us winning 2 weeks in a row. GWS to win by 17 points.
