When was the last time we beat a top four team away from home? Hardly a meltdown just realisation.
It's a work in progress. This team isn't settled.

Don't get me wrong, at the moment I'm far from optimistic. But teams have won flags from worse spots than we are currently in.

I'd say we haven't beaten a genuine flag contender since away since07 without checking. But I'm sure there are plenty of great teams that used to struggle beating the top teams interstate.

Firstly I do not know the stats re stoppages to last season so if as you say we are far worse at stoppages maybe you can produce those numbers. Make sure you only provide the numbers against the 5 teams we have played.

Secondly I attribute the opposition almost all times why sides lose stoppages. Just as all sides are hunting Hawthorn we are being hunted also as we just played in the GF.

There are way to many people who just think we have the best tap ruckman so we should win all the stoppages.
It does not work like that as we don't have times when the opponents are not there and our mids are not A+ players.

Are the directives different to last year? Do you actually know?
Are the ruckman knocking it where they say they will knock it? Are the mids getting there? Is someone doing the blocking as per instruction? Is the defensive mid doing his job? There is just so more to it than NN winning knock and we take ball away.
I wouldn't think Dean Cox would be void of knowledge in this are would you?
NN, Shuey and Pridfis are still there from last year, if it had all been changed under Coxy that directive would have come from Simmo and any smart coach would of returned it back wouldn't you think or at least in game change it.
We lose stoppages because we are predictable. Coaches of course have to address this also but I doubt they are teaching them the wrong things.

Well ..... NO ...I don't know for a fact that the directives are the same. Sorry I am not in the inner sanctum.

Maybe you could enlighten me and reassure me that "alls good" with our clearance / stoppage work.

Is Cox devoid of knowledge not at all, however whats transpiring in the clearances this season is a major concern to me.

I was worried when Cox was assigned the stoppage / clearance coaching role after Pyke moved on to bigger and better things.
You see I happen to rate it as the second most important role after the Head Coach and to have given that important role to a novice was, for me, perplexing.
Cox has been a coach for one season and I thought it was an unrealistic expectation to assume that a novice could handle such an important role with limited coaching experience. I have seen nothing to date this season that allays my concerns.

And yes I have some numbers for you of the teams that we have met thus far in the season that we played only once last year.
That being BRI , RIC and SYD. Clearances 2015: WC 128 Opposition 99. Clearances 2016: WC 114 Opposition 116.
I would have thought that is a red flag.

I do acknowledge that I haven't included the FRE and HAW stats as we played them 2 and 3 times last season respectively.
The FRE comparison is skewed significantly in our favour in 2016 when Sandilands went down and don't portray a true reflection.
As for HAW you don't want to read those stats as we are their Bitches big time.

I have read a few of your other post and I do agree with you that our midfield is piss poor and very average, alas at last we do find some common ground ;), further more as ChampsRevesby has pointed out on numerous occasions its so far2king frustrating that we find ourselves in the same position as we have been in for way too many season past. Our mid ( albeit are better than they once were ) they still are substandard compared against the top four or five sides.

The latter part of the Worsfold / Woodhouse recruiting and drafting legacy is still biting us on the arse.

I could go on more but thats enough at this point in time........am I seriously pissed off at the inept and dismal display that we put on today ?
That would be a YES.

I was at the game and it wasn't bad effort .

Our game plan feel down because we allowed swans midfield to bully us

We tried but it wasn't our day and 24 scoring shots to 12 or something like that tells us that we were not good enough

Structurally our Josh Kennedy is too far up the ground and darling is left to do too much .....we butchered the ball too much

Ok my quick semi melt ....the swans fans are the dumbest I've ever heard in my life ....they don't know a rule barely and sitting listening to them is funny as they are clueless to the rules, terminology and basically they footy dumb. And a bunch of w***ers for booing Jetta ...they sooked all last season over Adam Goodes and now look who is doing it. Funny that.

Jordan Bannister is the worst umpire ever ....period

On a positive we kept pace with them for almost 3/4 of the game. If this game was at subi we win by same margin

Nic Nat is improving so that's a positive. The forward line needs tweaking ...to be honest we need less small forwards ...i,wouldn't mind seeing Fraser McInnes and Lycett play ...drop hill or Cripps or Jetta ...

Hill, lecras Cripps Jetta is too many of similar ilk ......we need hutch back in

At 3-2 with with having played Hawks and swans away we have had a tough draw so it will open a bit in the next ten rounds. Lastly the SCG food is the most expensive and transport leaving the game is the worst in the country. Er what transport ?

You are right. I am a little more pessimistic because I don't think our cattle has the fundamental qualities to match it with the best when it counts. Happy to be wrong, but our record isn't great.

Some glaring issues atm but I'm crossing my fingers simmo can identify and address. If not.... trouble.

Clearances not much difference from last year.

Average 37.8 clearances this year putting us 11th.

Averaged 39.9 last year putting us 6th.

We have struggled with clearances for a while even with gun rucks. It's something several coaches have not been able fix.

Ponder this.

For significant periods of the game we were better than the swans and had the momentum. We had a few lapses in work rate to let them in, after that they kept up the pressure and work rate - many of our players turned up their toes. We competed but didn't work and didn't take opportunities with ruthless aggression.

We lost above the shoulders and it smelt like the GF with many of the same contributors.

Guys who give consistent effort and repeat contests are not rewarded, Hutchings should have played as he is the type of player who can contribute in close.

Lecras is in woeful form at present.

Cripps is unremarkable

Mackenzie looks anorexic and was easily outbodied by Issac Heeney, total embarrassment.

Darling is a third tall ffs.

Wellingham was very good.

Recruiters need to target players with specific mental toughness and speed for the midfield.

Jetta getting pushed around by swans players without any intervention from west coast players DISGUSTING.

We were in the lead part way through the 3rd quarter against a top 4 team at a ground we rarely play at and have not won at since last century.

Isn't that competing? It's not like we were blown out of the water until we gave up hope in the fourth when it was too much to come back from.

If we lead or hung with them for 3 quarters it would imply that at the the critical juncture we were beaten by effort, capitulation if I may, now that is mental mediocrity because I would hazard a guess that physically very little separates afl teams, other than youth, which too is debatable when taken in the context of mills, heeney, papley....
All of whom had better games than most of our midfield.

In the big games, certain players go missing.Lecras should be traded next year, hes past it,Cripps is soft and cant compete in the air,so what if he does a few tackles,Hill is good in the easy going but doesn't stand up in big games and I know a lot of people wont agree but in the big games Priddis is becoming a liability; He gives his all but is too easily tagged out. This immediately puts the club behind the eight ball.Yo and Shuey need to be given the respondsibility to lead, not hide behind Priddis.Couldnt we start Priddis in the forward line?? he tackles and his evasive skills have improved.Darling needs to run through the middle,Lycett,Lycett,Lycett...where were you when we needed you?If...and I say if; this bloke keeps improving and bringing that physicality to the table,he will be the bloke to lead us forward.I know the whole side failed but seriously a handful of blokes NEVER stand up except in easier games. Its easier to guard space at Domain but away you need blokes that can play contested footy, that can beat a player one on one.A fit Tunbridge [ if ever ] would be very handy right now.Cole looks a good sort,Lamb is putting his name forward. We have a goog FF and good FB and two great ruckmen. We nearly have it together but need to make a few hard decisions

I hated this game.

How do you determine the quality and skill of a team when it is based purely on luck. You can't do anything about it, but the game was wet and slimey thru that 2nd qtr and gave us terrible viewing, not as WCE fans but as AFL fans.

The better team definayely won I feel, even after it dried up, Sydney played a better game of footy.
