Well done murph.

I continually can't help but think how his career could have turned out so much better at a different club or if we just weren't such a rabble at times.

The guy has serious skills and has kicked a number of big time goals for us, like the match winning bannana against freo last year. In a better team he would have been a consistent match winner imo and be regarded higher in the industry and remembered more fondly by supporters.

We were forced to play him as an inside mid for too much of his career, and he probably never was a natural captain but he was the best we had...and so he was unfairly maligned as we were a basket case during his captaincy but it wasn't really his fault...kudos to him.
He will be happy with his career when he has a premiership medal around his neck

Our tall forwards should be just as big an advantage if they bring intensity of effort

With any luck
They will also be as tall as last week.

He was quite good against Grundy tho ..a couple of weeks back

Compare the pair:

37 hit outs, 20 disposals at 80%, 16 contested, 6 tackles, 2 marks, 1 goal assist, 2 score involvements, 2 intercepts, 4 turnovers.

13 hit outs, 13 disposals at 54%, 12 contested, 5 tackles, 2 marks, 0 goal assists, 3 score involvements, 2 intercepts, 4 turnovers.

You can work out who is who.

Even when Flip does some good stuff, it’s at the expense of letting the other ruckman do whatever the **** he wants.

It’s amplified when you’ve got a ruck who can get around the ground and have meaningful ball-in-hand contributions.

From memory he’s done ok against Nic Nat (once?) before, because his ability to cover the ground for an extended period of time is limited, as well as one or two less-mobile pure tap ruckmen, but that’s mainly based on his ability to jump high and get his hand to the ball first.

English carved him up last night, no mercy. I know some don’t rate it, but 204 champion data/super Coach points is ******* ridiculously big statistical on-field output. That could be a top-5 or 10 score for the year.

Phillips is not accountable outside the ruck contest, unfortunately. SOAP said it best here a few days ago, Phillips plays a flashy game with a few moments, but his opponent is BOG, lol.

Pittonet was well beaten by Marshall, but has either broken even or won the remainder of his contests.

Absolutely agree. could have easily been part of a premiership team. put his body on the line and got crunched a few times. He is a carlton champion. It would be amazing if we could jag a flag with him in the team.

Really wish murph, simmo and eddie were even just 2 years younger.

All 3 are carlton champions and it would give them the chance to have some real success with us.

You just never know what happens this year. It’s a strange year but a premiership is a premiership.

Watching the replay, Walsh's decisions to clear the area WAS the best option...often under immense pressure with no clear carlton target nearby to give a handball or short kick.

He should be praised for his efforts to run deep into defence to help out as a winger and potentially save a few goals just by being there.
..
This is obviously his role at the moment as a defensive winger, I’ve barely spotted him inside our forward 50 since the reboot.
I’m liking the way he’s being used in this shortened version of the game.

Do you guys reckon big Matty Kennedy will keep his inside mid role? I know last season he played forward with the lack of depth. I couldn't tell if he had a bigger role because of Cripps being sore?
Looked really good though.

I thought he would play mostly forward too, but don't think it had much to do with Crippa's soreness as he (from memory) started in the guts at the opening ball up before the injury...

Might depend on how we go...start him in the mid, if we are looking too slow can give Martin more midfield time and Kennedy can play more forward...

I agree with you re: Phillips normally, and certainly I got frustrated with his opponent being so influential so often...round 1 (v Nankervis) and 2 (v Lycett) last year as an example...

But stats can be deceiving...you could do a similar stats comparison of Pitto v English last week (albeit not as great a differential)...

I watched him v Grundy and was surprised by Grundy's stats as he didn't seem to be that effective on the night...and Phillips did some nice things himself...

Might be just Grundy's lofty standards, and he didn't play a bad game, but Essendon were rightfully happy I reckon with Phillips job on him that night, particularly considering the disparity in talent between the two...

Yeah if anything I've seen newnes, our other winger, push forward more and kick a few goals and hit some i50 passes.

While walsh is our more defensive winger.

Seems to be working pretty well.

Agree...the difference between Newnes in our forward half v Newnes in our back half is massive...looks so much more comfortable forward of the ball than in the back half...seems to panic a bit in the back 50, but thinks his way through it in the forward 50 whether its kicking a goal or hitting a pass...need to keep him forward of centre as often as possible...

I thought it may work having Newnes back, but have change my mind since.

He doesn't cover the ground quick enough, gets pushed out of the contest too easily and the connection between having the ball in possession and disposing it, is somewhat dangerously slow.

Playing wing though will drag you into the backline regularly. He's a trier but that alone isn't quite good enough.

He did some tough things last week, put his body in and kept a chain going on several occasions.... and THAT GOAL!!

Earned another week IMO

Nothing to do with not being worthy of this game, but more about me being uneasy with Newnes in the backline.

He enters the forward line with authority but looks very nervous back.

truth be told I'd rather our trip to the ground tomorrow over ports..........we really should take hold of any advantage we get - this is a big one for mine.......the idea of the port players' alarm clocks going off at 4am gives me farm wuzzies..........

I do agree with this.
To a point I can understand the animosity toward Newnes from some contributors on this forum - namely because he has had a few clangers which have directly resulted in goals to the opposition. He is a bit jittery under pressure and seems to lose his footing at the worst possible times.
I do think he has a place in the team - provided he plays forward of centre.
As you correctly state, the wingmen are often required to drop back and help the defence so a role purely on the wing is problematic.
He has surprising goal sense and has set up many shots at goal with pinpoint inside 50 entries.
Perhaps a HFF is the best for him?
