We didn't play well but bears played out of their skin. At one stage late in the second quarter their disposal efficiency was close to 90%.
They are the masters of sensing an easy kill at home. So many downhill skiers among their side that run forward of the ball. We did nothing at all to try and change it up.

A little taste of what is in store for us down the track.

Our backline, Balta, Broad, Vlas, Young and Rioli were good to very good.

Our mids were either out of sorts or pedestrian or both.

Our forward line is the worst in the league. Jack is so easily beaten these days because there is no easy ball, not a slight on Jack, but he can't fight the fight any more, and the rest are VFL level, young or just battling. Lynch would obviously make a big difference, but he'll be 31 next season.

We have almost no young mids in the VFL. Dow will go like RCD it seems, and besides Dow we have Sonsie who is struggling. How is that possible, what have our recruiters been doing. One, maybe two actual mids in our VFL side, the rest are flankers. In fact we haven't produced one since Dusty, the rest have been imports. That's a long time, Bolton but he's a forward/mid.

We got a reality check last night, granted we were probably due one and we most likely won't be that bad again. If we made the finals, what chance have we got of going up another level necessary in finals.

Actually liked the umpiring .. let it flow and gave players a chance to dispose of it .. not whistle crazy!

yeah-nah

bet KMAC didn’t like the “non umpiring‘when he was smacked on the jaw right in front of the maggot and wasnt paid a free….yet McCarthy will likely be cited and given 1 week

just umpire according to the rules…

Do we need any young Mids right now?
Since we have now Taranto and Hopper we aren’t really going to have much more room to play another mid over the next 5 years apart from maybe 2 more and one depth option Sonsie is one and will essentially replace Cotch and Prestia has a few more years so time enough to get another draftee plus we have Ross who could easily transition back to the midfield as spots become available

Bigger concern is the forward line

Yeah what happened to protecting the head? As well as the Kmac incident Baker copped 2 blows to the head then the umps paid a free against him for holding the ball!

This happy smiley demeanour has spread like a cancer .

Here we are getting flogged and we have Ryan and Cumberland playing and joking around like immature schoolkids while on the bench.😡

Such a flog is Hipwood
The guy has literally done * all his entire career and isn’t even the Lions 2nd best tall forward but he acts like he’s a 4 time Coleman winner and has 6 flags
thats the AFL these days, anyone can talk smack without having the credits in the bank. Like the Barometer when he got in Dusty's face (cant remember when it was) but still, the only smack talk I remember doing was pointing to the score board and that's it!!!

Before the game started was told that some players were taking cold n flu tablets on the plane. Wouldnt have stopped the lion's rampage but it does explain two things, teams are flat after the bye, and add to this some with the flu and that becomes a double whammy. We looked beyond flat, lethargic.
I had a feeling before the game that Dusty wasn’t the only one sick with the flu. Our worst performances usually come with a flu/gastro rumour pre-game

I really just want to see us start developing the kids.
It feels like we have been holding onto this fleeting notion that we can put together this dream run to finals. It was a fun little period but we were always going to struggle to hold off teams based on the amount of entries we allow week to week.

I know Mini is essentially in the middle of a dress rehearsal but I honestly feel like the best thing for this team is to start embedding the next wave in with the likes of Taranto, Hopper, Short, Baker, Bolton, Balta, Clarke, Ralphsmith, Cumberland etc.

I want to see Banks, Sonsie, Dow, Coulthard, Bauer/Bradtke, Nyuon, Brown etc all given an opportunity in the remaining games. Not all at once but give a few a stretch of three or four at a time.

We need to see what we have. It's actually becoming pressing now.
Let’s see who puts their hand up in todays VFL game at 11

Coulthard is more than likely to be in our bests….he’s picked up our structures quickly…clever player

Banks & brown - both have been playing well recently and either one should get a gig in seniors soon

I’m hoping 1 of Bauer/Bradtke/Nyoun play well today to get a gig

Said this this morning. Their game plan doesn’t hold up in finals because they sweat on unforced errors. They then run heater back the other way. They get a skilful side they will get cut up. When we were able to hit multiple targets we ran the ball untouched end to end

Random collection of thoughts post game:
Ryan's starting to worry me, I don't reckon he's a forward at all. His overhead marking technique is terrible, just sticks his arms straight up and hopes the ball will magically stick. Only looks comfortable taking chest marks. Not good.
Miller is a back up ruckman/defender, good insurance player to have but probably shouldn't be starting 22.
Jack just threw his body into marking constests and barely attempted a mark. Was getting double/triple teamed. Problem was there was no one around him crumbing which made is efforts pointless.
Across the ground our players either lagged behind their opponent or got sucked in to a contest leaving there opponent as an unopposed easy exit from the contest. Was bottom 4 stuff.
Thought Rioli battled hard, KMac was serviceable, Ross did his characteristic good:bad balancing act. Grimes was invisible, Nank stank.
Broad, Floss, Balta and Young went their hardest.
Hopper was fumbly early but started to find his feet, tough ask first up after a lay off. Taranto was annihilated by Dunkley, can only assume he had the flu, was a mile off. Cotch the same, barely sighted.
Bolton may or may not have played, yet to confirm. Stop short of the downhill skier tag here but gee whiz he goes missing when we're struggling.

Thing I’ve been most disappointed all year , not the W/L , our outright refusal to play young players , one debutant all year , lions had 3 teenagers we had None and got beat by 14G ,,, either club doesn’t rate any of our youngsters or they overate the experienced , either way there’s a problem Houston

When a team plays that well , you’ve let them thru lack of pressure , it’s a total breakdown, they were one step ahead from
5min in

I'd forgive the first one as he was kind of ducking when collected but they pay them more often than not to other teams, the second one came from behind and the umpire still called it as ducking. How do you duck what you can't see coming?

samsons a ruck
nank coming back into the side cruelled his mojo

Won and lost in the midfield in the first half
They had absolute dominance especially in terms of contested ball

Taranto copped a heavy tag and Hopper worked his way into the game with a fair bit of time off but Bolton was completely missing and Cotch only had a few cameo appearances

Would of been nice to have Prestia and Dusty to help mix up those midfield stoppages but both are over 30 as well and won’t be around for the long term

Really need Sonsie or even Dow to step up in the vfl so they can add to our midfield mix at afl level
We never tag we so stupid Neale kills us every time sick of it.... just like Sidebottom let them run around & destroy us, it's always the same players.
