Rodney Hogg is a bitter old fart who was never any good as a cricketer, yet he is given a forum on SEN, where all he does is slag Ricky Ponting, Michael Clarke and Chris Gale.

Let's establish some things. Ponting, Gale and Clarke each have more cricketing ability in their small fingernail than Rodney Hogg had on his best day. Hogg is jealous and bitter, because all these guys are or could be captains. Hogg thinks he should have captained Australia, but he didn't because- HE SUCKED!

He is a D-grade cricketer bagging A-grade cricketers. SEN are tools also for giving him any airtime. Why not get a cricket "expert", not some boring old **** who has axes to grind.

He should just report on the game, and keep his personal opinions of cricketers to himself. If he was a star, he could criticise those on his level, but it is a joke that a bottom-feeder like him can knock Ricky Ponting, who can make more runs than Hogg could in his dreams.

Didn't actually listen to Rodney Hogg, and i don't know what he said, but saying that you cant be critical of a cricketer, because they are better than you, is silly. Just because i'm not as good a batsmen as mike hussey, doesn't mean i can't be critical of him.

Problem with Hoggy his comments are always emotion filled, flys off the handle far too often and speaks well before thinking. He needs to realise Ponting, yes he's made many mistakes as captain but he's not captaining a star studded team.

As a slight aside, Rodney Hogg's CricInfo Profile is quite humourous :p:

Rodney Hogg's CricInfo Profile said:
Blond, blue-eyed, aggressive and menacingly fast, Rodney Hogg announced himself with 41 wickets for World Series-depleted Australia against England in 1978-79. The way he regularly beat Geoff Boycott for pace thrilled Australia at a lean time. Injury and a rebel tour to South Africa interrupted, and cricket life was never quite so bounteous again. Nevertheless, Hogg was generally in Australia's first rank. A quirky character, he once had his wife erase the videotape of a soft dismissal while batting in a Test, saying he did not want his son to see him as a coward. Later, he fulfilled a long-held ambition to open a greengrocery.

time for change if they want the ashes back they need to axe hussey and bring back hughes drop watson down the order. axe haddin and bring in paine hes the future haddin has 2 - 3 yrs max. ponting could hand over captiancy to clarke and play out his time pressure free. on the star studded team what does that say of waugh who only ever captained a star studded team OVER RATED id say

People are entitled to their opinions and Hoggy's is often quite inflammatory, but often his thinking isn't too far off the mark.

In this case, I disagree with Ponting being removed as captain at the moment. Im not sure Clarke is ready for it and there isn't really a large amount of options either way.

Rodney Hogg's a legend. His book 'The Whole Hogg' is one of the best & funniest cricket books I've ever read. Love the way he's always brutally honest and just says what he thinks. Despite what the OP says, he was a very good fast bowler in his day and according to his book he was within one vote of getting the Australian captaincy ahead of Allan Border back in 1984.

As a former Australian test player he's entitled to voice his opinion about the current test team, moreso than all the two bit hack cricket journos going around. I don't always agree with his opinions but at least they are usually a bit different and never dull.

His criticism of Ponting's captaincy is pretty valid too and he's not the only person to say it. A number of other former Australian players have been critical of his captaincy at times.

He certainly has some unusual ideas when listening to him on SEN. Funny thing is, he tries to give you his tip, which ends up being wrong. He suggested that for the 1st Test at the Gabba, if we could get $5 for a draw, we should jump all over it. Lol that the test was over in 3 days.

What about if we say he was a decent fast bowler who provides a bit of light-hearted humour in a cricket coverage nowadays. He says some good stuff and some silly stuff. I actually reckon sometimes he is spot on.

He's no more a knob than you or I.

Rodney Hogg is funny bugger. I think he is the perfect 'expert' for SEN. He provides a bit of insight into the game and some ideas on team selections. Some of his ideas are left field, but this adds to his character. Do we want someone to come on and say 'the captain is doing a good job, the coach is doing a good job, the selectors are doing a good job, everything is fine'?

He always bags the NSWmen and there automatic test selection and backs the Vics in. gotta love a bloke like that.

What is his username on bigfooty?

In relation to his suggestion Ponting should chuck-in the Captaincy... His alternate was Katich.

Sadly, that damages his credibility a bit...

Katich would be OK i think with the younger team, his captaincy in the IPL was pretty good... but really I don't think Punter should be watching his back to much.

how can you be so sure? I played in a ACA masters game with him earlier this year, and he was still pretty quick and hit good areas. But yeah he was a bit of a knob.

I heard some story about him a few years ago playing in the Adelaide Hills league, that some young bloke came out to bat and Hogg told him to put a helmet on. The young bloke told him where to go and Hogg put him on a stretcher.

Don't know how legit the story is, but it's hardwicket and those guys wouldn't be used to facing anything over 120k's.

Wouldn't surprise me if it's true. There's actually a chapter in his book about all the blokes he hit in the head. Unlike most politically correct fast bowlers these days, he openly admits that he used to love sconing batsmen.

There's a story in that chapter about some bloke in league cricket (not sure if it's the same one) that came out to bat without a helmet. He hit him in the head and told him to put a helmet on, he refused and so he hit him in the head again, again he refused to put a helmet on and so he hit him in the head for a third time. After that he decided he'd better put a helmet on.

Hard to know if all his stories are completely true or just exaggerated bullshit but they make for a great read all the same.

Yeah, he's the sort of bloke that likes to throw out left field opinions and also provides a bit of a humorous take on the game. Some of his opinions have merit and he actually knows a bit about the game but you shouldn't take him entirely seriously either. He's kind of in the same mould as Kerry O'Keefe and Damien Fleming.

A few extracts from his book, gives you an idea about his self effacing sense of humour.

As an "expert commentator" of the game he's an absolute joke, he only gets a gig on these radio shows cos they know he'll try to be controversial or just go berserk about something.

At least he's colourful in his views, i'll give him that, more interesting than a lot of the boring others out there, even if he's always wrong!

Not true, he was a very good quick bowler.

However, it staggers me just how little he knows about cricket for a guy who played as much 1st class cricket as he did.

Then again, it was SEN who employed him, and they seem to like that sort of thing.

If you think Hoggy wasn't any good as a cricket, you obviously never faced him.
