Rolling All Australian Team 2020

Legit think any of Port, Brisbane and Geelong would beat that team.
Butler has been great for periods of this season. Ryan as the only legitimate small forward is just silly.
Just make an AA midfield team and then do another AA team. Can’t just keep parking genuine midfielders on the half forward line and call it a team

Very disappointed to see how the selections have played out, always thought the AA team would be rewarding of players of all positions, where wingers can put on the wing and forward pockets put in the pockets, in comparison to the Brownlow, which is more of a midfielders award. Martin, Dangerfield and Bontempelli should not have been in that forward line, maybe Martin at absolute most. Guthrie and Macrae on the wings over the likes of Menegola and McCluggage as well... and to top it all off they've given the captaincy to Dangerfield over Boak (who is going to finish top 5 most likely in the Brownlow and his team won the minor premiership. Lost all hope in trying to do predictions for this team.

Every year, I've been been questioning why only 4 or 5 forwards are rewarded with AA selection compared to 6 or 7 defenders
But this year has broken all the records. They've selected just 3 forwards!

Congratulations to Jack Gunston on making the squad for the 5th time (and being snubbed on 4 of those occasions)

Guthrie spent 17% game time on a wing and Macrae spent 4%. They couldn’t even find a spot on the bench for Menegola.

Gawn deserved his spot. He's been a beast all year despite his injury.

I'm more puzzled by Byrne Jones and Moore. Surely Ridley and Maynard have had better seasons. Byrne Jones especially has been quite mediocre...

I agree that Maynard has probably had a better season but to call DBJ mediocre is just ignorant.

This All-Australian team just goes to prove how irrelevant the accolade is. Means absolutely NOTHING!

Hands down the WORST one I have ever seen!

A selection panel made mostly of media personalities, selecting players based on their status in the game. It is all about resumes and reputations along with possession numbers.

You cannot seriously think Martin was deserving of an AA spot over some of those who missed out. The guy didn't click until halfway through the season. He, Dangerfield and Bontempelli all in the forward line over genuine forwards such as Cameron and Butler is absolutely pathetic. Whether they had a good year or not, they shouldn't be named in positions over those who ACTUALLY play in that position.

What honestly goes on in the selectors heads? 'Let's just put in as many midfielders as we can'.

Also for May and Weitering to have missed out after playing as traditional defenders arguably not losing a single one-on-one contest over the likes of Moore who got in simply due to seeing more of the ball (no surprise given Collingwood are stat-padders nearly every year, on top with disposals). Didn't he get moved once or twice up forward during the year because he was getting destroyed by his forward opponents?

Byrne-Jones over Maynard and Ridley is also absurd.

No actual wingmen either?!

This team is mostly a bunch of marketable faces. All part of a money-making scheme.

The AA's mean zilch anymore unless they are made either a public vote or something else better.

Guthrie spent 17% game time on a wing and Macrae spent 4%. They couldn’t even find a spot on the bench for Menegola.

I personally would have picked Menegola over Guthrie but the latter has still had a pretty good year. Albeit not as a winger but I don’t think that has stopped them before

Don't see how Neale has been more 'valuable' to his team than Boak or Hawkins this year. Hell even Petracca had more influence than Neale in turning games. Pretty big joke of a night, gotta say

What exactly are you basing this on? He's our best player in a side that was equal the top of the ladder. Was probably our best player in at least 10 of our games. Sounds pretty valuable to me.

The stupid thing about the midfield obsession is it fails to recognise how the game is weighted to make them look good on the stats sheet.

If you are in your team's best 3 or 4 midfielders, win or lose you are pretty much guaranteed 15- 20 touches a game simply by virtue of playing on ball and being a frequent link option- you are going to get those touches and those opportunities to look good on camera because opponents generally aren't that worried about stopping touches if the clearance and scoring differentials are going their way. Sure there are exceptions, but if you are not the most heavily tagged player in your team, you're going to get some cheapies, and to be an AA mid you should really be an obvious game breaking player who has dominated the entire year.

Standing out as a consistent, high quality small forward, or a lock down defender is much harder- the ball will only come near you a limited number of times each game, you almost always get it in a contested situation with a direct opponent, and the difference between a good game and a shocker is generally how well you execute your skills under pressure with little margin for error- using Butler/Papley/Ryan as examples, if they **** up 5 or 6 difficult touches then that's it, they've had a bad game. The guys who consistently deliver good games each week in that position deserve recognition because it is very hard to do.

Automatically naming 10+ midfielders in an AA team because they get lots of touches makes about as much sense as naming the 10 leading goal scorers in the AA team. Its a skewed measure of what makes a good player.

Revised team:

B: Haynes, Andrews, Ryan
HB: Vlastuin, Moore, Daniel
C: Menegola, Steele, Macrae
FO: Nic Nat, Neale, Boak
HF: Ryan, Dixon, Danger
F: Butler, Hawkins, Papley
INT: Petracca, Adams, Dusty, Sheppard

OUT: Gawn, Bont, Guthrie, Byrne-Jones
IN: Menegola, Vlastuin, Butler, Papley
