roo2macca's 2011 Phantom Draft

Remove this Banner Ad

This is my third phantom draft after completing the previous two years with very positive feedback. Admittedly, this draft was a lot harder to construct as it is essentially a lottery after pick 15 or so. So here is this year's effort...

First Round
#1 GWS: Jonathan Patton (Eastern Ranges) Height: 197cm Weight: 95kg D.O.B: 20/05/93
The #1 pick will either be Patton or Conglio. I have them going for Patton because players like him only come around once every blue moon. A physically imposing key forward with very strong hands overhead and on the lead in addition to being a lovely long kick of the ball. The beauty about Patton is that, unlike Watts in 2008, he should be physically developed enough to play regular senior footy in 2012 which is what GWS need.

#2 GWS: Stephen Coniglio (Swan Districts) Height: 182cm Weight: 76kg D.O.B: 15/12/93
A very close second behind Patton; Coniglio is the complete midfielder, similar to that of David Swallow. He is a big disposal-winner, uses it effectively, solid tackler, is quick and can snare some goals to go along with all of that.

#3 GWS: Chad Wingard (Sturt) Height: 181cm Weight: 73kg D.O.B: 29/07/93
A few phantoms have him sliding to Port Adelaide, but I still believe he is top 3 quality as he is a very exciting player to watch, and has been all year. He is a versatile goal kicking midfielder who can play forward as well, great agility and an elite left-foot kick. Played a considerable amount of senior footy for the Double Blues this year and greatly impressed, so he should slot straight into the GWS line-up as an outsider midfielder who can float forward.
#4 GWS: Will Hoskin-Elliot (Western Jets) Height: 182cm Weight: 73kg D.O.B: 02/09/93
The next best prospect in line, WHE is quality outside class, but that doesn’t mean he is a soft player, he certainly isn’t. Has the potential to become an incredibly damaging wingman as he possesses blistering pace, clean skills and good skills. Can also burst up forward where he can cause further damage. The Giants do not have a game-breaking midfielder, and WHE fits that bill perfectly. One of my favourites of this draft pool and will be an excitement machine for years to come.

#5 GWS: Billy Longer (Northern Knights) Height: 202cm Weight: 95kg D.O.B: 12/05/93
As far as I’m concerned, the Giants lack quality young ruckman, and Longer is the best ruckman in this year’s pool. A genuine tap ruckman, Longer has also impressed with his second efforts. Can also been thrown forward where he can take a strong mark and kick a goal. In a shallow draft for ruckman, Longer stands out.

#6 Port Adelaide: Dom Tyson (Oakleigh Chargers) Height: 186cm Weight: 82kg D.O.B: 06/06/93
Port are in desperate need of class midfielders, and young Dom is just that. Had an absolute ripping championships where he was named in the centre for the AA team. He also has size to go along with his elite skill set, which is what recruiters would drool over. Not the quickest player in the draft, but he is definitely a footballer rather than an athlete.
#7 GWS: Matthew Buntine (Dandenong Stingrays) Height: 188cm Weight: 83kg D.O.B: 19/10/93
He could easily go in the top five as he is pure quality. He is exactly the type of player that the Giants need, someone who can play in defence and through the midfield. Has exquisite skills, can read the play very well and is capable of both providing rebound from defence and is even effective at tagging roles from time to time. A ready-made player who should be able to line-up in round 1 next year.

#8 Brisbane: Liam Sumner (Sandringham Dragons) Height: 182cm Weight: 70kg D.O.B: 16/08/93
Probably the next player in the draft, Sumner is a potentially elite outside midfielder. He certainly has the attributes of one. Hehas real pace and x-factor along with terrific vision and the ability to spin out of tackles and make a real impact with only a handful of disposals. Hasn’t shown anything as an inside midfielder but is the best pure outside midfielder of this draft.

#9 GWS: Todd Elton (Dandenong Stingrays) Height: 197cm Weight: 87kg D.O.B: 29/04/93
Elton had a very quiet championships, not helped by injury however, but the talent and potential is certainly still there and pick #9 is probably about right for him. He is a mobile ruck/key forward who possesses strong hands and has decent skills for a player of his size. He and Patton up forward could very well develop into a formidable duo in the future, a mouth-watering prospect for Chocco.

#10 GWS: Taylor Adams (Geelong Falcons) Height: 181cm Weight: 80kg D.O.B: 20/09/93
A potential future captain, Adams has terrific leadership credentials and a classy inside midfielder to go along with it. Is generally a very good kick of the ball, has quick hands in traffic and is a very strong tackler. Definitely has the capability of becoming the next Jimmy Bartel, so this would be a terrific pick for the Giants.
#11 GWS: Toby Greene (Oakleigh Chargers) Height: 180cm Weight: 78kg D.O.B: 15/09/93
One of the best inside midfielders in the draft, Greene is a high accumulator of the ball who has very solid endurance, excels at the clearances and the type of player who will always give you 100%. Another class addition to the young Giants midfield.

#12 Brisbane: Adam Tomlinson (Oakleigh Chargers) Height: 192cm Weight: 86kg D.O.B: 10/08/93
A versatile KP who can be groomed to play forward or back, Tomlinson is a genuine talent who should be a very good fit for the Lions. He is a strong mark overhead which is an asset of a key forward but has also been capable of shutting down dangerous opposition forwards in defence. In addition, he can even play stints in the midfield when needed. With a very good attitude to go along with that, Tomlinson could very well turn out to be an excellent pick-up.
#13 GWS: Mitchell Grigg (Norwood) Height: 183cm Weight: 81kg D.O.B: 02/01/93
Despite poor testing, I think Grigg is still a class act and is still a first round pick. As we’ve seen, he has a very penetrating left foot kick who has very good decision making skills and endurance. I probably have him higher than most phantoms as he has slipped in the rankings due to poor testing, but I think he is a real “footballer” and has the potential to become a vital cog in the Giants midfield.

#14 GWS: Fraser McInnes (Perth) Height: 197cm Weight: 91kg D.O.B: 19/07/93
One of the, if not the best KPD in this draft, McInnes is someone who could play a considerable amount of senior footy next year. He is physically ready to go, he is a very strong mark overhead and great speed. It’s always important to have depth in every area, and McInnes can add to the Giants’ young KPD stocks.
#15 Richmond: Elliot Kavanagh (Western Jets) Height: 187cm Weight: 78kg D.O.B: 19/05/93
A lot of people may not have seen Kavanagh’s ability as he suffered injury throughout much of the year but he is the best available mid at this pick. Has all the tools to become an elite midfielder with speed, clean skills, great clearance work, solid accumulator and a great ability to read the play. He could easily go higher than this.

#16 Fremantle: Shane Kersten (South Fremantle) Height: 191cm Weight: 92kg D.O.B: 15/03/93
Missed out on the champs due to injury, but is still a good prospect. An undersized key forward but he is a really strong mark on the lead, has good goal sense, well balanced, and has a superb 50 metre+ kick that is also very accurate. Due to his size, he will probably end up either being a leading full-forward in the Fevola mould or a third tall, but a young and strong marking forward is what the Dockers are lacking at the moment, and due to recent cases of home-sickness, they would probably go for the local boy.

#17 Western Bulldogs: Brandon Ellis (Calder Cannons) Height: 181cm Weight: 81kg D.O.B: 03/08/98
After an outstanding year for the Cannons in the TAC Cup and championships, Ellis is first-round material. Despite his stocky build, he tested well in the sprints, he provides great rebound from defence as well as being capable of shutting down dangerous opponents. He’s also very courageous with his attack on the ball and with his ferocious tackling. He is also capable of playing stints in the midfield, and, IMO, is the best available player for the Dogs.
#18 North Melbourne: Sam Docherty (Gippsland Power) Height: 185cm Weight: 83kg D.O.B: 17/10/93
Docherty was not in the initial Vic Country side but was selected in the fourth match against Western Australia where he greatly impressed. He is primarily a half-back flanker who has explosive dashing speed which makes him a very dangerous player coming off of half-back. His kicking is also exceptional, and was the designated kick-in because of this as it can find targets and is very composed under pressure. A lot to like about him and #18 is around the mark for him.

#19 Essendon: Daniel Markworth (Calder Cannons) Height: 189cm Weight: 76kg D.O.B: 03/04/92
An over age player who is relatively new to Aussie Rules but the talent and ability is certainly there to warrant a first round selection. He is a tall midfielder with a neat kick, a great burst of speed and clean skills. He is this draft’s answer to Nathan Fyfe which, as we know, is pure class.
#20 Fremantle: Devon Smith (Geelong Falcons) Height: 175cm Weight: 73kg D.O.B: 10/05/93
If Smith was 5cm taller, he would almost be a top 10 pick, but his height will probably restrict him from that. Regardless, he is a small midfielder who has a great burst of speed and elite endurance that will enable him to rack up big numbers and kick a few up forward, where his strong tackling is also an asset. A Boomer Harvey clone who I think is capable of carving out a very strong AFL career.

#21 Sydney: Tom Mitchell (Claremont) Height: 181cm Weight: 79kg D.O.B: 31/05/93 (F/S)
The Swans should be stoked that they have snared Mitchell under the Father-Son rule when he would have easily been a top 10 pick. He is an outstanding inside midfielder. His attack on the ball is first-rate; he is superb in contested situations and also possesses great awareness and clean skills, both by hand and by foot. He is someone who will be ready to play AFL from round 1 and will be Jude Bolton’s eventual replacement.

#22 Carlton: Jackson Paine (Sandringham Dragons) Height: 193cm Weight: 87kg D.O.B: 21/06/93
The Blues could do with more insurance up forward, especially considering Mitchell’s fair share of shoulder injuries and the fact that Casboult is still a rookie and an unknown. Additionally, the other KPP’s they drafted last year are defenders (Watson and McCarthy). Paine is a key forward who has very strong hands, both overhead and on the lead who is also a capable midfielder due to his strong work rate and solid field kicking.

#23 West Coast: Jordan Lockyer (West Perth) Height: 190cm Weight: 85kg D.O.B: 15/06/93
Lockyer is a versatile and undersized KPP who can perform well at both ends with his extremely fierce and attack on the footy. He also has a big set of hands and does a very good job defensively.

#24 Gold Coast: Brad McKenzie (Sturt) Height: 188cm Weight: 75kg D.O.B: 29/05/93
McKenzie was one of SA’s best players throughout the championships. Like his namesake on the Gold Coast, he has a cannon of a left foot that can travel 60 metres with no problems. He has a great set of skills, a good reading of the play and he also has very good inside work. Will be part of midfield rotations as he can play on the flank and in the midfield.

#25 St Kilda: Myles Bolger (South Fremantle) Height: 199cm Weight: 80kg D.O.B: 25/03/93
With depleted ruck stocks, the Saints will probably snap up Bolger with this pick as he is one of the best ruckman in this draft pool. He struggled with injuries this year but is every chance to develop into a top line ruckman. He moves very well around the ground is also an exceptional tap ruckman.

#26 Richmond: Alex Forster (Norwood) Height: 189cm Weight: 75kg D.O.B: 14/07/93
Forster is a highly-skilled player who has played across half-back with stints in the midfield. He is a very good decision maker who consistently makes the right choices both by hand and by foot as well as displaying good run and carry with excellent vision. As mentioned, he has primarily played across half-back but I can see him becoming a tall midfielder in the future and could also be a part of rotations with Deledio and Houli.

Priority Selections
#27 Adelaide: Hayden Crozier (Eastern Ranges) Height: 184cm Weight: 68kg D.O.B: 24/12/93
A special talent and a highlight reel, Crozier is someone who can spark his side whether it would be a sensational specky like the one he took against WA or a brilliant goal. Still, he is young, raw and needs to be more consistent but as we know, Dale Thomas had the same problem and is now an elite midfielder who still provides the X-factor for his team. I can see Crozier eventually becoming this player with the right development. His clean left foot and spark is definitely something the Crows lack, and should pick him up if he’s available.

#28 West Coast: Murray Newman (Swan Districts) Height: 177cm Weight: 65kg D.O.B: 18/11/93
Newman is a small midfielder/forward who has a fair bit of development left as his weight indicates, but he is a very dangerous player. He has pace, very good vision, the ability to find space and usually has very good ball use.
#29 Fremantle: Sam Frost (Sandringham Dragons) Height: 193cm Weight: 85kg D.O.B: 28/08/93
Frost is a very athletic KPP who can excel at both ends at the ground, but I like him better a CHB given his ability that he has incredible dash for someone of his size. With good development, he can become McPharlin’s eventual replacement in defence and could also fill Freo’s need for a KPD.

Compensation Selection
#30 Brisbane: Andrew Boseley (Geelong Falcons) Height: 194cm Weight: 80kg D.O.B: 04/09/92
A tall, lanky defender who has great speed and agility for a player of his size, Boseley is a very good shutdown defender, who is overage, but reads the play very well. He shut down Patton with success this year demonstrating his fantastic shutting down and defensive abilities. Still has a fair bit of development left but has Fletcher-like capabilities.

Second Round
#31 Essendon: Shane Nelson (West Perth) Height: 178cm Weight: 70kg D.O.B: 11/05/93
A highly skilled, small all-round midfielder in the Leigh Montagna mould, Nelson is a highly-skilled ball winner with outstanding endurance and speed. He excels at winning the hard ball as an inside midfielder but he can also succeed as an outside midfielder. I’m aware of what Hird stated which is that they are targeting ruckman, but I believe that their first priorities should be class in the midfield.

#32 Geelong: Nic Haynes (Dandenong Stingrays) Height: 191cm Weight: 70kg D.O.B: 18/05/92
Haynes is an overage slightly built wingman with a heap of talent. He has a nice turn of pace, is a strong mark and can pinch hit up forward when needed. He still has some development left but is a highly talented prospect who is very capable of going in the first round.

#33 Hawthorn: Sam Kerridge (Bendigo Pioneers) Height: 188cm Weight: 84kg D.O.B: 26/04/93
Kerridge surprisingly didn’t get any games for Vic Country but his stocks have risen after a very solid year as the Pioneers captain in the TAC Cup and a very promising league game for the Bombers. He is a very powerful midfielder who racks up big numbers, has a great burst of speed and is a very strong clearance player. A good size and is also a goal-kicking midfielder. He would go higher than this if he got a few games in the championships.

#34 Geelong: Michael Talia (Calder Cannons) Height: 193cm Weight: 87kg D.O.B: 11/02/93
Talia is a very good key defender who is a very strong contested mark, top endurance and a solid work rate. With Scarlett on his last legs, Talia is the best available and #33 is probably around the mark. The main knock on him is his field kicking which is very hit and miss, a lot like his older brother.

#35 St Kilda: Julian Dobosz (North Hobart) Height: 193cm Weight: 85kg D.O.B: 17/11/92
An overage KPF who is relatively new to the game but had a very strong championships which will see him be selected anywhere between 20-40 IMO. He is very talented who possesses great speed and an incredible reading of the play which causes him to beat his opponent most of the time. The Saints need to prepare for playing without Roo, and Dobosz is an incredible talent who is very capable of becoming a very dangerous player.

#36 Melbourne: Josh Waldhuter (Central Districts) Height: 184cm Weight: 83kg D.O.B: 15/03/93
As inside as they come, Waldhuter has been well-noted for his kamikaze style of play. He is terrier-like with his tackling and also follows up with multiple efforts. He doesn’t rack up big numbers but he makes up for it with the mentioned qualities. He is also a very good kick and has decent speed for an inside midfielder. Is physically ready to go and can provide some inside grunt to complement Moloney.

#37 St Kilda: Sebastian Ross (North Ballarat Rebels) Height: 187cm Weight: 82kg D.O.B: 07/05/93
Ross is a lively midfielder/forward who has a very high work rate and standout left foot that consistently hits its target, even when under pressure. Can play both inside and outside, but is just as good playing across half-forward where his delivery and silkiness is top notch.

#38 Hawthorn: Marley Williams (Claremont) Height: 181cm Weight: 85kg D.O.B: 22/07/93
Williams has a lot of exciting traits about him. He is slippery, agile, a good size and that left foot of his is a lethal weapon that can launch the footy from 55-60 metres from a standing start with no difficulties. He also has very good goal sense and also has a touch of magic about him such as that standout one-handed grab against SA. Will chiefly play across half-forward in his early career stages as he needs to develop a bigger tank to play a permanent midfield role.
#39 Western Bulldogs: Henry Schade (North Hobart) Height: 194cm Weight: 81kg D.O.B: 08/10/93
An athletic key defender, Schade is a good reader of the play with a tidy left foot. He has a good leap, and is agile with nice pace. Slightly raw but he is very capable of developing into the Dogs next FB.

#40 North Melbourne: Thomas Sheridan (Calder Cannons) Height: 185cm Weight: 76kg D.O.B: 28/10/93
Sheridan is a solid well-rounded midfielder who bases his play off of his elite endurance and aerobic capacity. He can also be well-suited to the wing, up forward or even down back. No real desperate needs for North, so they will pick the best available here, and Sheridan is just that.

#41 Adelaide: Alex Woodward (Sandringham Dragons) Height: 179cm Weight: 79kg D.O.B: 11/06/93
A small inside midfielder who represented Vic Metro in the championships, Woodward is very in-close with very clean hands and is a very strong tackler. Whilst he doesn’t have great pace, he is very agile as well as being a big clearance winner. I would say he fits the Crows’ needs to a tee as they are lacking in players on the small side who can win clearances and a strong tackler whose tackles actually stick.

#42 St Kilda: Michael Bussey (Eastern Ranges) Height: 196cm Weight: 81kg D.O.B: 05/07/93
Bussey is listed as a tall forward, but I think he can play anywhere. As a matter of fact, he is probably better suited in defence due to his very good reading of the play which is why I think the Saints will target him here if he is the best available. He has good pace and is a strong mark overhead, but hasn’t performed to expectations this year which is why he will slide a tad, but the ability and potential is certainly there.

#43 Sydney: Brody Mihocek (Burnie) Height: 191cm Weight: 86kg D.O.B: 04/02/93
He was probably Tasmania’s best player in the championships as his selection as the AA U18 CHB indicates. He is a versatile utility with decent skills, a strong mark, and has the ability to play on both talls and smalls. May slide a little due to average testing at the combine but he is still a very solid athlete who would slot into the Swans backline nicely.

#44 Carlton: Clay Smith (Gippsland Power) Height: 180cm Weight: 82kg D.O.B: 11/05/93
Smith is a real competitor with great endurance, hard tackling, and a good clearance player. His main knock is his style of kicking which will probably see him slide done a touch, but he fits the bill of an inside midfielder perfectly.

#45 Port Adelaide: Cameron Ellis-Yolmen (Woodville-West Torrens) Height: 191cm Weight: 88kg D.O.B: 28/01/93
A tall midfielder who only played one game in the championships, but he was dominant in the SANFL U18’s where he averaged 30 touches and 5 clearances a game. He is a very good size, is strong overhead, a strong tackler and would almost be ready to play due to his physical state. With the likes of Kerridge, Woodward and Smith gone, Ellis-Yolmen is probably the best inside mid left in the draft.

#46 Adelaide: Bradley Hill (West Perth) Height: 178cm Weight: 66kg??? D.O.B: 09/07/93
Hill’s stocks have considerably risen after exceptional results in the combine. He recorded a phenomenal 16.1 in the beep test and won the 3km trial ahead of Hoskin-Elliot meaning that he has elite endurance as well as a great burst of pace! He plays similar to his brother and his skills are also very good, not as good as Stephen’s whose are exceptional, but are still solid nonetheless. He is definitely a project pick who will take a couple of years to fully develop as he is more of an athlete at this stage, but if he committed enough and with his talent and ability, he can certainly make it at the next level. I was unsure on his weight as the WA team sheet had him at 60kg but the combine had him at 72kg, so I estimated the half-way point of that.

#47 Brisbane: Tom Downie (North Ballarat Rebels) Height: 205cm Weight: 95kg D.O.B: 04/07/93
A towering ruckman from a basketball background, Downie is no doubt a project player who will take time but the talent is certainly there! He greatly impressed in the two matches he played this year with his tap work and strong marking around the ground. Downie is probably the best project ruckman available after Bolger. The recruitment of Hudson suggests that they are in desperate need for ruckman on the senior list, and they will probably grab another one in the rookie draft.

#48 Geelong: Tom Curran (Oakleigh Chargers) Height: 195cm Weight: 86kg D.O.B: 18/09/93
Staggered that the Hawks didn’t pick him as an F/S pick, he could’ve been a real bargain, but he’ll get drafted around this mark. He is a strongly built KPP with good hands and the capabilities at playing at either end of the ground, but has been better suited as a key forward.

Third Round
#49 Western Bulldogs: Elliot Yeo (East Fremantle) Height: 188cm Weight: 73kg D.O.B: 01/10/93
Yeo tested very well in the combine on the back of his pace and run and carry. He’s a solid all-round midfielder with a very nice kick, and produced some very strong performances in the Colts which should see him drafted around here.

#50 Collingwood: Zyrus (Waylen) Manson (Claremont) Height: 195cm Weight: 84kg D.O.B: 24/04/93
With great risk comes great reward, and this could apply with the selection of Manson. He is a very risky selection but it could come off as he is an elite talent. I have him much lower than most phantoms and that’s because of his risk. A lot of clubs would be scared of the go-home factor as seen by Troy Taylor and Isaiah Stevens but they can also come off as seen by Liam Jurrah. He has an amazing vertical leap with great goal sense and has the ability to control games very quickly. A club like Collingwood who are in a solid position for most areas and with their first pick coming here, they may as well take the punt.

#51 Port Adelaide: Lee Spurr (Central Districts) Height: 183cm Weight: 80kg D.O.B: 27/07/87
Can’t believe he isn’t already on AFL list as he is absolute quality. He has had a few fantastic seasons with Centrals with his main qualities being his versatility to play back, middle and forward, his strength overhead and his high work rate. I really think he can add some class to Port and should consider him with this pick.

#52 Melbourne: Jackson Merrett (Geelong Falcons) Height: 187cm Weight: 70kg D.O.B: 27/02/93
A versatile midfielder, Merrett has a nice turn of pace with a very neat skill set. He plays the outside role very well, and can also play inside if needed. He is also noted for his outstanding leadership qualities which could see him in a leadership group if he develops into a quality AFL player. He needs to bulk up a bit, but is very draftable and could easily go higher than this.

#53 Hawthorn: Luke Breust (Rookie Upgrade)

#54 Melbourne: Jimmy Webster (Glenorchy) Height: 187cm Weight: 72kg D.O.B: 28/06/93
Didn’t have the year I expected he would’ve but is still very draftable nonetheless. He is a fleet-footed wingman, who is also competent across half-back and half-forward, with a nice penetrating left foot that hits its targets more often than not.

#55 Richmond: Brett O’Hanlon (Dandenong Stingrays) Height: 189cm Weight: 82kg D.O.B: 17/07/93
With their lack of forward flankers, the Tigers would love to land O’Hanlon at this pick. He is one of the strongest marks in this draft, who marks consistently on the lead, overhead and marks at the highest point. Just never seems to drop them. He also has a penetrating left foot kick that can travel 55m, and there is a lot to like.

#56 GWS: Matthew Jacquier (Woodville-West Torrens) Height: 187cm Weight: 78kg D.O.B: 29/03/93
Missed selection from GWS last year but they can just as well take him with this pick. He didn’t feature in the championships but his SANFL U18’s form was superb as he kicked 37 goals in 14 games (averaging 2.6 a game) which is a great return from a leading medium forward. He has good game sense, a strong set of hands and the capabilities of playing as a leading forward or the occasional crumber.

#57 Western Bulldogs: Jack Crisp (Murray Bushrangers) Height: 189cm Weight: 81kg D.O.B: 02/10/93
A solid medium utility whose major features are his tackling, defensive pressure, strong marking, good skills as well as having a nice decent kick on him. He is more damaging as a medium forward but is just as capable of performing well as a Tyson Goldsack-like defender.

#58 Fremantle: Simon Tunbridge (GWS Giants)
As we know, he walked out of GWS due to homesickness, so if he was to be drafted, it would be by a WA club. It’s hard to say where he would’ve been drafted this year if GWS didn’t pre-list him, but because he did, he obviously has potential, which he certainly does. He is a strong-marking forward with a nice kick on him and is a very good size as well. Freo are in need of more strong-marking forwards and, along with Kersten, could form an unyielding pair.

#59 Essendon: Ben Brown (Glenorchy) Height: 198cm Weight: 90kg D.O.B: 20/11/92
If it wasn’t for a knee injury, Brown would already be on an AFL list. He is very much a project player but he has a lot of potential, and if a club is looking for a KPP who can play ruck, then there should be no reason to not take a punt on Brown.)[/B]

#60 St Kilda: Josh Tynan (Gippsland Power) Height: 185cm Weight: 76kg D.O.B: 06/11/93
A very fine and composed half-back flanker, Tynan showed a lot of promise and potential in the championships averaging 15.6 disposals a game playing primarily across half-back. He has impressive speed who is strong overhead and loves a contest. Tynan can also play on talls and smalls and is probably the best available player at this pick.

#61 Sydney: Sam Gordon (Geelong Falcons) Height: 197cm Weight: 87kg D.O.B: 31/03/93
There is a lot to like about Gordon. He is a strong-marking key forward who has a raking left foot kick on him. His field kicking is very good but his set shot is very inconsistent, very similar to Sam Reid in a lot of ways.

#62 Carlton: Dylan Buckley (Northern Knights) Height: 179cm Weight: 70kg D.O.B: 16/03/93 (F/S)
Struggled with injuries this year which is why he didn’t perform to the level he is capable of. Still, he has a highly talented midfielder with good skills, nice pace and the ability to run and carry. Hopefully he can rebound and become the player that he is capable of.

#63 West Coast: Ashton Hams (Rookie Upgrade)

#64 Adelaide: Jordan Murdoch (Glenelg) Height: 190cm Weight: 80kg D.O.B: 13/03/92
Will be too short to play as a KPF but has the tools to excel across HF. He is very fast and evasive for a 190cm player, and also impressed with his breakaway, closing on opponents and effective disposal. A lot to like here and should be drafted.

#65 Collingwood: Tom Sundberg (Collingwood VFL) Height: 183cm Weight: 84kg D.O.B: 22/12/88
Was one of the best young players in the VFL this year, Sundberg is a utility who has sensational disposal. Never seems to miss a target. With Collingwood well-placed, there is a possibility that they will go for a mature-aged player and Sundberg is a quality one at that.

#66 Geelong: Steven Verrier (South Fremantle) Height: 188cm Weight: 82kg D.O.B: 24/06/93
Verrier is one of those players that will end up playing in a variety of positions whether it would be through the midfield, across half-back or across half-forward. He has great dash, clean skills and high-class decision making assisted by his high footy I.Q.

Fourth Round
#67 Collingwood: Jarrod Witts (NSW Scholarship Holder)

#68 St Kilda: Kyal Horsley (Subiaco) Height: 182cm Weight: 88kg D.O.B: 02/09/87
Another mature-aged player, Horsley is a stocky midfielder who had a superb year in the WAFL. He finished runner-up in the Sandover Medal and has impressed with his ball-winning ability (averaged around 24 touches a game), nice left foot kick and also the ability to play up forward or down back. He would also be able to play from round one and add even more class to the Saints midfield.

#69 Brisbane: Mitchell Golby (Rookie Upgrade)

#70 Western Bulldogs: Luke Dahlhaus (Rookie Upgrade)

#71 Fremantle: Aseri Raikiwasa (Port Adelaide Magpies) Height: 191cm Weight: 91kkg D.O.B: 18/04/93
Probably more of a rookie selection but I’ll include him because I really rate the guy. He seems undersized for a KPD, but he has the strength to play at FB, however, I can see him playing across HB at AFL level as he is also very athletic. He has a great size about him and has further developed his game by having fellow Fijian, Alipate Carlile, as his mentor. He is still very raw and, as I said, is probably better suited to a rookie selection, but I included him as I think he could be worth a shot with one of the last picks of the ND.

#72 Fremantle: Jack Newnes (Northern Knights) Height: 184cm Weight: 74kg D.O.B: 24/02/93
A medium utility, Newnes has very clean skills and hardly misses a target. He is a good decision maker and has a high footy I.Q but needs to win more contested ball, even if he is more of an outside player. Nonetheless, he is still very unlucky to miss the cut and, in reality, should go late in the ND.[/B]

#73 Western Bulldogs: Matthew Panos (Rookie Upgrade)

#74 North Melbourne: Luke Delaney (Rookie Upgrade)

#75 Essendon: Stewart Crameri

#76 St Kilda:

#77 Hawthorn: Luke Breust (Rookie Upgrade)

#78 Geelong: Lewis Hender (Glenelg) Height: 187cm Weight: 89kg D.O.B: 13/09/93
Hender represented SA in the championships last year and had an impact but he didn’t have near the same impact this year. Still, he played some senior footy for the Bays this year and showed some of his potential. He is a powerfully built forward who will play the third tall at AFL level.

Fifth Round
#79 GWS: Setanta O'hAilpin (Carlton)

#80 Gold Coast: Alik Magin (Rookie Upgrade)

#87 Port Adelaide: Leon Davis (Collingwood) Height: 177cm Weight: 80kg D.O.B:17/06/81
As we know, Port are targeting him and this will most likely be a PSD pick.

#82 Adelaide: Aiden Riley (Rookie Upgrade)

#83 Fremantle: Nick Lower (Rookie Upgrade)

#84 North Melbourne: Cameron Pedersen (Rookie Upgrade)

#85 Sydney: Nathan Gordon (Rookie Upgrade)[/I]

#86 Geelong: Jed Bews (Geelong Falcons) Height: 186cm Weight: 78kg D.O.B: 14/12/93 (F/S)
Geelong elected to take him with the last live pick of the draft; Bews is a reliable and athletic medium defender who is versatile, has solid skills and is a good decision maker.

Sixth Round

#87 GWS: Daniel Joseph (Glenorchy) Height: 184cm Weight: 74kg D.O.B: 01/10/93

Joseph had a reasonable championships as a midfielder who possesses decent skills with solid footy smarts. He got an invite to the state screening and will most likely be a rookie selection but I’ll throw his name up as I think he has a fair bit to offer as a midfielder.

#88 Gold Coast: Alex Sexton (Local Talent Selection)

#89 Adelaide: Matthew Wright (Rookie Upgrade)

Seventh Round
#90 GWS: Tom Lee (Claremont)

#91: Gold Coast: Jackson Allen (Local Talent Selection)

Eighth Round
#92 GWS: Josh Bootsma (South Fremantle)

#93 GWS: Pass

#94 GWS: Pass

#95 GWS: Pass

Unlucky
Joel Hamling (Claremont) Height: 194cm Weight: 78kg D.O.B: 09/04/93
Hamling’s stocks seemed to have risen over the past week and Kevin Sheahan even rates him as a top 30 prospect. I guess the main knock on him is that he is still very skinny and would need some time in the gym to beef up before he can play KPP at AFL level, but he is a first round rookie pick at the worst. He is very agile, clean below the knees, has good pace, great composure and is someone that can fill a need at any end of the ground and even through the middle.

Justin Clarke (Booleroo, Melrose, Wilmington) Height: 196cm
A CHB from the country who has drawn comparisons to Dustin Fletcher, Clarke has been observed by talent scouts even since he was asked to play one reserves game for North Adelaide. With the loss of a few KPD’s to the new expansion clubs, I can see Adelaide taking him as a rookie as homesickness would not be an issue.

Lachie Neale (Glenelg) Height: 177cm Weight: 73kg D.O.B: 22/10/93
A small midfielder from the Bays, Neale is a strong inside mid who has a strong work rate and has footy smarts in close. Will be more of a rookie pick as he doesn’t have any eye-catching qualities but if you’re looking for a real workhorse, Neale is your man.

Ben Brown (Glenorchy) Height: 198cm Weight: 90kg D.O.B: 20/11/92
If it wasn’t for a knee injury, Brown would already be on an AFL list. He is very much a project player but he has a lot of potential, and if a club is looking for a KPP who can play ruck, then there should be no reason to not take a punt on Brown.

Jye Bolton (Collingwood) Height: 183cm Weight: 80kg D.O.B: 03/03/92
He was cut from Collingwood’s rookie list which resulted in much disappointment from Collingwood fans as, from reports, played some very good footy in the VFL. He has a lot of development left and could really add midfield depth to a team that needs it.

Danny Butcher (Gippsland Power) Height: 185cm Weight: 78kg D.O.B: ???
Butcher played some great footy late in the TAC Cup which should see him make it to a club’s rookie lost. Brother of Port’s John, he is much shorter than his older sibling and a completely different type of player. He is an outside midfielder with nice pace and a great work rate with a nice attack on the footy.

Haiden Schloithe (South Fremantle) Height: 179cm Weight: 72kg D.O.B: 16/06/93
A small-medium forward in the Mark LeCras mould, he is a dangerous forward who has good defensive pressure, a strong tackler with very good goal sense. Another who should feature in the ND but if not, he should be a first round rookie selection.

John McKenzie (South Launceston) Height: 177cm Weight: 80kg D.O.B: 03/06/93
A very tough inside midfielder, McKenzie won the Hunter Harris Medal for the best player in the second division and was also Tassie’s MVP. However, he is the type of mid who would dominate at U18’s but would struggle to make the same impact at AFL due to his size and speed. But still, he would be a solid rookie option similar to McNeil from 2009.

Ben Darrou (Sandringham Dragons) Height: 190cm Weight: 91kg D.O.B: 25/11/93
Represented Vic Metro in the champs, Darrou is a strong-bodied defender who can play on both talls and smalls. He is a strong mark, provides good run from defence and has a decent kick on him. There is a lot to like about him, and is someone to work with.

Quality write up. Make some very good points about individual players as well.
From a Port Adelaide point of view I would be punching the air if we landed Tyson. I personally rate him above Wingard and only behind Coniglio for mids but Sheeds and Choc will love Wingard so you may well be right on the money.
Great job overall.

Like these picks and the rational behind the selections. :thumbsu:

Yet I wouldn't rule out Watson and McCarthy from becoming forwards.

I would be THRILLED to get Paine, Smith and Buckley in this years draft !!!!!!!! It addresses our needs for a KPF and inside mid + we keep the Buckley name alive at the Blues. :D:thumbsu:

Very happy with Fremantle's lot in your selections, and like the sound of Raikiwasa late.

Re our selections 16 and 20;

Given Bulldogs, Roos and Bombers select between those 2 picks, do you think they are a chance to select Kersten at all? You don't have any of those teams selecting a tall forward. I think only the Bulldogs would be any sort of chance.

If that is the case, a strategy may be to take any of Ellis, Doherty or Markworth ahead of Kersten, especially if Lockyer is also still on the table as a forward option even if Bulldogs went for Kersten. While Kersten may have more of the label of specialist forward about him, by the sounds of Lockyer he could also fill that role, and has another option down back if it doesn't work out.

Looks significantly better to me if we went Ellis, Kersten (Lockyer), unless you prefer Smith over Ellis (Doherty Markworth) for us. What do you think of this strategy?

This draft is especially weak for KPP's, and with the likes of Ellis, Docherty and Markworth still available at 17, 18 and 19, I couldn't see the three mentioned clubs picking a KPP over them. Kersten is one of the main standouts and would be probably be snared by the Dogs or North with one of their picks if Freo don't pounce with #16.
