4 lives picks (perhaps only 3 if Mitch accepts) ... who should we pick?

What are our needs? Tall defender? Outside mid? With experience or rookie (by definition)? Willi rookie? Rampe? Little?

So far we are obviously also considering Barlow and Hughes. Is anyone else on the radar? Rumors? Inside knowledge? What do we know?

It's been discussed a lot in the draft thread. But we need and young tall defender we can develop and or we need a mature age tall defender.

So Barlow is probably a very serious candidate for us. From what I have seen of the young talls that missed being drafted Gordon looked ok and there was one or two others.

We usually Rookie a Willi player and I heard that Cam Lockwood is training with us.

But other than the key tall defenders as a priority we may also look at outside mids and small forwards. There is a boy at Ballarat who I'd like to see us look at, Derick Micallef. Very capable small forward with good pace. I suspect Nth or someone with higher picks than us will get him first though.

Hope you guys dont mind me intruding on your discussion but i thought you might like to know that i have an insight word on one of the boys I know who is training with your team this week. His name is riley heddles, 19yo and played the last 2-3 years at the dandy stingrays :). From what i've seen and heard, he's a smart, talented player. I know him personally and you'll be satisfied to know that he's got a good head on his shoulders, if given the situation to be rookie listed, he will thrieve to make the most of the opportunity!
I like the doggies and enjoy watching you play with success. Goodluck to you next season and hopefully goodluck to rilz if your bunch decide to give him a shot :thumbsu:

Nothing I've seen on Barlow and Hughes excites me. Unlikely to be more than fringe players. Not a fan of re-drafting Hahn either.

Rookie picks have a way of turning up unexpected or unknown names (not many knew about our interest in Brodie Moles this time last year). So I'm happy to wait for a few surprises next Tuesday.

The two types of player we need are:

1. Potential KPD - 19 to 21-y-o who has started to develop but still has improvement in them, maybe a VFL listed player (eg Faulks 12 months ago!) Ideally 193cm-197cm.

2. Midfielder with genuine pace and good delivery by foot. (Those with pace are more likely to find enough time to use their delivery to good effect, unlike Boyd, Cross, etc who often aren't quick enough to find time and space to get balanced.)

Since teh Doggies usually take a Williamstown player as a rookie, I've got a couple of names that would be worth checking out;

Cameron Lockwood- Fairly tough player who was fairly good when he played this season. 22 also so plenty of time in his career.

Dane Rampe- Fairly solid mid and flanker. Decent footskillers but sometimes butchers it. Nothing that training can't fix.

Ben Casley- Worth a shot. He was the Western Jets captain this year and played well for Williamstown when he played for them. Of course, one of the games was a complete and utter flogging where he kicked four on debut so maybe it was the quality of the opposition that made him look good.

Thanks for the insight, but can you give us some more info? What position does he play? What are his main attributes? etc...

Riley Heddles

D.O.B: 15/01/1991
Height: 177cm
Weight: 81kg
Position: Forward/Back/Midfield

A versatile footballer, Riley can play in any posiiton with his defensive pressure on the opposition being a key attribute. A team member for the Dandenong Stingrays (TAC) in both 2009 as well as playing as a 19 year old this current season. Although he suffered nerve damage in his arm during last season missing most of the year, Riley managed a few late games in the year and is hoping for a consistent 2010 with more possessions and an increased work-rate. Riley has increased his body strength providing an 'X Factor' with his super pace and extreme pressure on the opposition.

Hey guys, just a quick aside, whom have we picked up in the rookie draft previously that's turned out at the very least serviceable for us. Just want to get a gauge on our strike rate.
Dale Morris & Matthew Boyd are more than serviceable, Harbrow got us a first rounder in compensation and Picken is one of the first picked every week.
Moles & Hooper last year have been elevated so our strike rate isn't too bad.

The Western Bulldogs have also been in contact with Aaron Mullet. Interviewed his boss etc. He played in the Vic Metro U18's side this year from Eastern Ranges. Half back Flanker with clean foot skills. Went to draft camp but hasn't got picked up as yet. Had strong interest from Nth Melbourne/Freo/Gold Coast prior to the draft.

A Bulldogs player called Mullet :D

The only way we could outdo ourselves would be to draft Kevin Moccasin and Roger VB Tinnie.

Not surprising, Dalrymple loves these types.

Max Otten, Oakleigh Chargers (Vic), 193cm, 86kg, 10/11/92[/B][/B]
Key defender who was controversially cut from the Vic Metro team early in the under-18 championships after Vic Country's Lucas Cook had kicked a few goals on him. Responded by going back to the TAC Cup and kicking a bag. Shows the same application that his brother Andy has shown at the Crows.

Could be worth a punt?

Any interest in Michael Talia, brother to Daniel Talia who was recruited to the Crows last year.

Plays as a TAll defender/CAlder Cannons/Assumption college boy.

Grandfather is a bulldogs premiership player. He doesn't have the talent of his brother, but from what I have heard he is very hard working. Also died in the wool bulldogs supporter - not that this should be a final consideration.

Id be expecting Cam Lockwood to be our 2nd last pick in the rookie draft and go under the williamstown deal with them covering most of his wage, Mitch Hahn to be re drafter with out last selection as back up.

I always like the idea of going a small back/midfield type as you will find most of the up in the air talls are taken late in the draft. Have a look at guys like Boyd being picked up late in the rookie draft.
