In my opinion, half the drafts called strong aren’t. Eg 2008 was a “strong draft” whereas the two either side of it were meant to be weak. However, 2007 has produced two Brownlow medallists, 2009 has produced two as well, while 2008 has produced zero.
The difference is that 2008 went deep, we were taking rookie draft picks that were as good or better than almost all of our draft picks in 2007.
So what does strong draft mean? That the top 20 are all rolled gold, or that pick 100 is as good as pick 40 is in any other year? If it’s the latter, we shouldn’t be anymore concerned about trading top picks than any other year.
