Player Watch Rory Sloane - Retired

Football is his job, so he keeps playing until the club sacks him.
Please dont blame Sloane, I blame the AFC all the way here.

He has a young family to support and life after football in terms of earning capacity in the media is challenging, let alone in a two team town.

Sloane would play till his 40s if he could. :drunk:

I’m constantly amazed at how incredible naive some are around here..

“I’m happy for him to get another year as long as he plays predominantly in the SANFL”..

We heard the exact same thing said about Mookay.. for three fxxkn years in a row!!!.. and for three years in a row he was named in the 22 for his shit 17 posessions a week whilst a young player wallowed in the SANFL..

If this unflushable turf gets to hang around for another year.. HE’LL BE PLAYING IN THE AFL 22.

Stop delusionally thinking he wont.

We have Taylor (last year and this year before his injury), Bond, Dowling all looking decent in the SANFL that will need to be played next year..

We will probably pick up a mid or two in the draft..

Thats 5 blokes that will have their development hindered because Sloane is, and wants to continue to be, a fxxkn list clogger.

Move him the fxxk on.

Yeah if that's a straight quote all those calling Rory a champion of the club can gtfo

I’m not sure where the ‘clubman’ thing came from. Rory’s proven he’s about only himself, which is perfectly fine. Made him a shit captain when genuine leadership on behalf of players was required, but as a footy player, he doesn’t have to look after anyone but himself.

I've respected your posting over a long period of time, but some of the stuff you've come up with lately astounds me. How could Sloane or any other footballer, senior or other, tell another footballer to get the f out of the midfield if the coach told him to play there? This is on a par with your assertion that Jones early form was a result of senior footballers giving him self-serving instructions and confusing him. Where is the evidence for either of these claims?

The first claim is a scenario that can happen. You think the runner is heading into the centre square to drag Rory out?

Rory will shrug off any coaching criticism by saying he felt it was necessary

The Jones claim has already been addressed.

If you think either of these scenarios dont happen or haven't happened then I won't change your mind.

I've seen enough club football in many grades and levels to know it's a thing.

Rowe won’t be far away in joining ranks. “Just give him his 500 hungie and be done with it, he’s a champ of this club”.

Rowie only says that type of stuff when hes talking to Sloane directly/ But when he is just talking about Sloane with Tim, hes of the same view as the majority on here that he shouldn't be playing on, only the other week he said Sloane is running on his knees...

It's a really bad look. I'll admit I've often thought some of the criticism of Sloane was over the top but I'm starting to come around to the narrative that this guy is only in it for himself and doesn't give a s**t about what's best for the club.

On the Tradies Podcast with Mitch Cleary they said Sloane was gone to the Saints until we offered a fifth year (they wouldn’t budge on four)

Suuuurely not. How tone deaf can someone be.

I honestly had the hope he wouldn't be like this and could read the room after correctly giving up the captaincy to Dawson.

He didn’t give up the captaincy, he had his hand up for it until he was told he wasn’t getting it. Giving up the captaincy requires actually removing yourself from the available options. He didn’t do that.

That's one thing that makes me think we've told Rory we're not re-signing him, or at least waiting until the season is over.

He's still being very vocal about wanting a deal next year in a way Tex wasn't this year once he knew his deal was definitely happening. So maybe hoping he puts some pressure on the club, let everyone know I still want to play, if I don't it's the club's fault and hope the barrage of public opinion sways the decision to give him a deal.

To be fair to Rory, he’s just answering questions posed. Tex wasn’t much better last year, backgrounded his mates to ask the question of the club. Remember the leak regarding Melbourne being interested in offering up 2 years? I think with Rory it’s his abysmal form plus Tex was a living certainty to get a deal, so he didn’t have to get the public narrative going.

The club looks at the list a bit closer than it's credited here. One key factor is if players in the SANFL are in form or projecting.

Is Brown a chance? How are Taylor, Berry, and Hately progressing? Will Crouch get picked up as a FA? Will Sloane sign on as the 25th best player, taking Crouches SANFL spot?

Most critical is if we are getting players onto the list, is Stephens a chance? Is there someone else, Williams, Berry, Flanders, Hollands? Will they come with a promise of game time? (Yes).

It's like a game of dominoes. Once the pieces fall (re-sign or request a trade), the contract falls in order of priority.

If Sloane signs on, it means we have missed someone. If we are waiting, it is because we are waiting on other things.

Most people's problem with keeping Sloane as depth is there's not a lot of trust in the current coaching group they'll actually utilise him as depth.

Nicks has been very upfront about wanting X amount of experience in the side at all times, and missing out on someone like Redman, that looks like an area we may miss out on adding to this off-season.

I think the club got the older players on board for the rebuild by telling them that if they were best 22, they'd play. Getting them onboard was important and they basically held up the team 2020 (second half) and 2021.

I think we'll sign him as I don't have faith in a gun midfielder trade in, but I'm definitely hoping this is his last year as best 22. I think he'll play out this year though as the kids aren't lasting the distance. Him and Keays who I'm completely cold on.

TBH there's a few, I don't think we can replace them all this off season.

Thats the nicest way to write "SoftCocks", that Ive ever seen written.

Ideally you'd have Keays playing in Murphy's role next year, which is why I don't think you need to be signing Murphy for multiple years. Then hopefully move one Pedlar or Rachele (or both) in a whole lot more next year in place of Keays.

So add that to the Brad Crouch trade and that's twice St Kilda have proven themselves to be a better managed club than Adelaide. They did hire Ross and Silvagni though so I don't know if that cancels it out.

I thought it at the start of the year, and I haven't changed my mind, in fact, evidence over the 19 rounds backs it up.

Sloane would make a perfect permanent sub. Experienced voice on the bench through the first half, then he plays the second when it's a touch slower and has versatility. Easier on his body so he can maintain a higher level.
No need to have youngsters waste a week with a couple of quarters only, or players we should have pushing for selection.
Then leading to a nice retirement at the end of the year, maybe a year as SANFL captain to replace Wright.

Are Sloane, Tex and Roo still business partners in the Alma? How can someone who is the director of list management be in partnership with players? Especially when nearing the end of their careers and tough calls need to be made.

And anyone thinking Sloane doesn’t get another year is dreaming.

A woman I used to work with told me a funny story about Tex when they encountered him at a pub (pretty sure it was the Alma). She and her friends were sitting at a table which apparently was Tex's designated/favourite table and when they refused to move he made some comment about the weight of one of her friends. I don't know if it's true but this lady doesn't follow football or even know much about the Crows so I suspect it might be - either way, it was pretty funny
