This also tells me there has been no direction from above

The player
The Media Team
The Coaching Group?
The Executive

In most high profile leagues clubs make decisions months ahead. Lets stop pretending the players choose the captain and understand there are times 'the club' steps in

Any smart organisation would know the special circumstances Sloane found himself in - I mean they've had 9 months - they would/should have discussed this in November at a minimum.

That the media organisation have NOT instructed players on a suitable response tells me
1. The club will continue with Sloane
2. The club is not smart
I see what you mean about the messaging. The way it's dragged on and everything said by players in interviews suggests to me that Sloane will be retained as captain. Despite all this, I still cling to a shred of hope that Dawson (or maybe someone else) will be made captain. Matty Nicks must know he's running out of time.

Didn't 7 news say a decision would be early in the new year?

Not peep since, what gives?
I think the 7 news story was clickbait made up nonsense and not based on anything concrete the club had said. If anything the 7 story would make the club more intransigent in proving the 7 story wrong and keeping Sloane on as captain. Maybe that was Theo's intention especially if he is Sloane's mate.

Seems the consensus is that Dawson should be made next captain, which I agree. Here’s food for thought: Dawson made captain in 2023 vs in 2024, how much is it really going to change our future?
2023 is the year we really need to make progress and having a new, fit, playing great football captain should be requisite for the start of our climb.

Sloane's form was in decline before the knee, he's now got to come back from that, is ageing and probably won't play start of season or every game and certainly not in the middle (we effing hope!). Sloane is past leading on field by doing great acts. Dawson can and does.

Failure by the AFC to act sooner than later will not help our cause. At an absolute minimum it should be joint captains. John Who, get on board!

I’m pretty confident Dawson will be captain this year in 2023

Back up from ?

I’d go Keays , Doedee and possibly Fogarty ( as a guy that hasn’t had it easy but has worked hard to push his way into a player , also a commanding presence )

Other options to support Laird and Berry

"It’s been an absolute privilege to lead the Adelaide Football Club for four seasons, a club that means so much to me and my family," Sloane said.

"The captaincy has been an unbelievably rewarding role, I feel lucky to have been given the opportunity and I’m a better person for the experience.

"Now that I’ve reached the latter stages of my career, the time has come for me to hand over the reins, focus on regaining full fitness and contributing on field. However, I’ll be there to support the next captain in any way I can and I have no doubt the incoming captain will lead our club with purpose and passion."

“To Captain an AFL Club is one of the greatest honours and it is not something I have ever taken for granted,” Sloane said.

“It has been an absolute privilege to lead this side for the past four years.

“At 33 years of age, coming back from serious injury and in the twilight of my career, I felt that this is the optimal time to hand over the position and support the next Captain of our Club.

“I have experienced great football highs and lows throughout my career and I look forward to seeing the next person take the opportunity as Captain and make it their own“

There you go Rory, it's not too difficult when it's the best thing for the club

Is this fake news? If not it sounds like he was pushed.

the issue is that Sloane believes he's a walk up start because his leadership and experience demand it. It's ingrained into our senior players that playing poorly and not deserving a spot on performance is irrelevant.

Just trying to give Sloane a couple of templates to work with for his handover presser.

They are actually doctored pressers from former captains who did the right thing BY THEIR CLUB and have stood down, Ziebell's and Pendle's. Also Heppell has publicly said he's quite ok with passing the baton if the club thinks it's best.

Sloane I feel looks after himself first, club second, too full of his own importance.

My worry with Sloane staying captain is if his form isn't up to playing best 22 then we sacrifice playing our best 22, and possibly wins, because we won't drop the captain.

OUTS: Sloane (inj)

Gonna have a lot of injuries this year

People getting confused that it’s real.
When clearly it’s not.

that was weird, but I wasn't sure exactly what old mate was referring to. I thought he was having a crack at the poster for having the opinion and us for engaging in the discussion. If he was just laughing at the do,ts that thought it was real, that makes sense too.
