Did Hogan in the midfield turn the game for us though? We still lost. I remember a patch of play in the game where Gold Coast had missed all their opportunities and we kicked 2-3 goals from few inside 50s. It's not like Hogan into the midfield was purely a move based on today's game. He has been floating around there in the JLT cup too. I just think it's pointless for a team who struggles to score as it is, to finally recruit a big name gun forward only to play him in the midfield. There are other things we could've done, such as Walters or Cerra in there.

Walters, Fyfe ,Mundy and Lobb were all in at the bounce down at various times and we still got out worked. It just wasn't our day. Tough game to watch. Brayshaw , Cerra and the young guys all struggled. Flying up there has been a tough gig for a lot of teams. Hogan was struggling to get a touch forward, throwing him into the mid at least got him a few touches. He was way under done.

Every time I read a Tayl0r post I literally have to re-read it about nine times... and it still barely makes sense. And I have a degree in English.

It's really non-committal commentary, that basically amounts to nothing, but is written in these footy buzz terms. There's no celebration nor is there digging into Fremantle. It's just really hard to ****ing read and pontificating horseshit.

Footy is a simple game. It isn't that scientific. But it's like you're waiting for an AFL club to read your posts and hire you.

Lyon's fallback position is always the same...load the back line at the first sign of trouble.

It's 6/6/6 at the centre bounce, then 2/8/8 after that.

Win the centre clearance and we look great, win the ball in the back line and we have 2 short people to kick to in the forward half.

Correct. It sometimes makes sense against the top teams, but against Gold Coast? That just shows a lack of intent, and hamstrings the players - especially the forwards.

It only makes sense as an option when things aren’t working. I reckon Carlton are getting it right now, so too Brisbane. Go for it, then if it isn’t working or the opposition get a couple of quick ones, go back to that. Slow the game down and control the tempo. We didn’t give it a chance to work, went defensive when the scores were basically level, and as you say, against a young rebuilding team. Very negative coaching.

Ross Lyon we hate you, you select a guy who has a mental breakdown last week, we got him as our new Pavlich, then you proceed to run him in the midfield, dardy kicks 5 last week and we see him many a time running off the backline, I don’t know if you like messing with our fans or you’re just not all there, take Rosich with you, you’re done

We can’t fluctate of kicking 130 pts, brings Hogan in and only kick 58. That’s druven by Ross. First quarter was pathetic. Didn’t change the plan after that.
Why is Cerra across half back?

It all started from the midfield being soundly beaten. Our fortunes this year are going to be tied to how well guys like Tucker and Brayshaw can compete and support Fyfe and Mundy. I was ok with Hogan coming in and trying to assert some dominance around the stoppages, but the lack of forward structure when we did win the ball was inexcusable. All week we heard about this newfound luxury of having multiple talls but there was scant evidence of that today.

The criticisms of Lyon/the team today are perfectly valid, I'm simply trying to point out that it's ridiculous to blame Ross for this loss but give him no credit for the way we played last week.

So, in your thinking, how much was down to the coaches and how much was down to the players, this week vs last?

It's very difficult to narrow it down given there are so many intersecting factors involved. Ross and the coaching staff are responsible for creating and instilling the gamplan, picking and motivating the team etc, but the players need to put the effort in and execute under pressure on the day.

Ultimately though if you have to reduce it down, Ross is the man that takes responsibility for how the team performs. It's his job on the line after all. So with that in mind, he deserves a lot of criticism today, as he deserved praise last week.

Overall, I don't think he's really answered any of the questions we had of him at the start of the season. The performance last week has been overshadowed now by another insipid showing away from home. If this is the season where we're judging the rebuild and his capacity to continue coaching us, we're at a stalemate, but it's only 2 rounds in. Not that I have much faith that we'll be able to produce consistently good football under Lyon, but I'm hoping to be proved wrong.

It would just burn your skin off if I were paid for writing about footy in my spare time huh

I'm quite shocked that everyone thinks playing Hogan in the midfield is a good idea when we only scored 58 points in a game of Footy. We didn't recruit him as a midfielder.
He is what he is and hes not a bad midfielder so why not give him a run? Got him into the game. It did suck though seeing Walters as the target at center half foward.

Our midfield is copping a lot of criticism and there are a few grim predictions about their prospects this year.

I fail to see how this midfield isn’t going to be competitive most weeks;

Fyfe
Mundy
Hill
Langdon
Blakely
Brayshaw
Cerra
Tucker
Conca

Or am I too biased? I mean WC won a premiership with a midfield not much better than these guys and today we were up against Swallow, Miller, Bowes, McPherson and Fiorini ffs! Why did we get beaten in there? Not enough effort or out coached? I think I know what the answer is.

As much as that loss annoyed me we need to move on and focus on next week, I feel we can bounce back. But for the long term future i don't have faith in Ross being the one to get us where we need to be.

Hogan to the middle was the best move he made all game. Played well there too.

But Ross wouldn't want too many more performances like that. We play like that the next 2 weeks and I reckon that's curtains.

Nah West Coasts midfield is a lot better than ours.

They have 3-4 guys that’d be our second best mid and another one or two that would be above average in our side.

I think you're a bit biased, our midfield is bog ordinary bar Fyfe and Mundy. If one of them has a down day (as Mundy did today) we really struggle. Hill and Langdon are good but they are wingers, where we are losing it is in the clinches and Brayshaw/Tucker/Conca are not what you'd call even B grade midfielders. Blakely coming back might help but we played him on HBF before he got injured anyway.

Surely you’d agree that we shouldn’t have been pantsed by Swallow, McPherson, Miles and Bowes though. Not too many A graders there, nor B graders.
