Who do you think is the roughest all time player in the AFL?
I've got to say Danny Southern. He looks scary and he is mighty rough. *cough*deanwallis*cough*

Carl Ditterich has to be up there. Ted Whitten wasn't bad by all accounts. Leigh Mathews was close to the biggest thug of the last 20 years. Robert Muir was probably the scariest because he could really lose it and do anything.
Jim O'Dea would be the biggest ****.

Some mean mothers in that lot, MarkT. Jack Dyer by all accounts could be added to the list. Dermie and Dipper formed a pretty rugged tag team (especially with Gary Ayres as their backup). Ronnie Andrews was a mean bastard (the only guy that put the willies into Lethal) and Gary Ablett wasn't afraid of throwing his weight around.

McGhie, the sharpies' footballer was a mean bloke. Balme was an out and out psycho. Some other 70s players I thought of-Ray Biffin, Mal Brown, Norm Bussell, Sid Jackson.

John Worsfold also threw alot of people around like a rag doll! No disrespect to Milane, but they were equal.
This is my favourite Woosha story......
Playing against Geelong, see's his pal and team mate suma get dumped behind play so he takes Budha Hocking to the absolute cleaners. At half time.....Bluey Mckenna comes up to Woosha and says....Jesus Woosh, why did you cain Hocking? Woosha smiled and said....I saw Suma getting cained and I thought...I oughta cain someone just to show these mongrels that we mean business. Hocking didnt play the next week!

Worsfold wasn't in Millane's class. Watch the Daicos goal in 1990 and the lead up. Worsfold tried to give it all to Pants but he was sent packing over towards the ground.

Budda Hocking was as soft as they come.

Surprised no one's mentioned Tony Lockett yet.

"Plugger" could throw an elbow here and there, certainly.

Leigh Matthews was a rough player, as was Brereton, and Rhys-Jones had the tendency to boil over a bit too, from what I recall...

Question-- among the players playing now, who's the toughest and the dirtiest of the lot? And do they compare with the players of the past as aforementioned?

That should spice things up on this thread a bit...

Cheers,
William

I dont agree Rohan. Woosha was as tough as nails! I wouldnt say that he was better than Milane, I wouldnt say Milane was better than Woosha. They were both tough customers and hard at the ball.
I dont agree with what you say about Budda either, he wasnt soft. He played more within the rules than the other two did. Doesnt mean that if the ball was near him he wouldnt do ANYTHING to get it.

Matthews was filth.

Balme was obviously a mental case.

ATM? Dustin Fletcher is a dirty prick IMO. Elbows, kicks, stray punches in packs etc.

Hmmmm I dunno. Id have to say that Dustin Fletcher is preety bad. Look at how many times he's been reported in this year alone!

I remember seeing Worsfold king hit Mick Mcguane at Vic Park a few years back... Mcguane was standing there watching the play and WHAM..out cold from a smack to the back of the head...It happened on ther wing 20 metres in front of us

...Yup....You were REALLY a tough guy Worsfold......

Just watch the Grand Finals to see how soft Budda was. First sign of injury and pain he would go off to the bench.

Worsfold never put Darren on his backside. The bumb he laid on him in 1990, with a broken thumb, just shows how much tougher Millane was than Worsfold.

Same builds but Darren had that pit bull look in his eyes that even scared Lockett.

Robert Harvey, the ultimate ball player might disagree.

My friend...theres one little fact your missing from your story. You cant remember the abuse Woosha was copping from Mcguane before that? Mcguane was asking for it IMHO. You shouldnt say something and then expect not to cop it.
On another point....Mcguane and Woosha havent been the best of mates have they? The 1994 final when we got up by 2 points comes into memory.
