Please Please... Djerkurra and Veszpremi have no place in our starting line up. They are going to need at at least a few games in the seconds to prove themselves! IMO Reid, Hargrave and Moles would be ahead of them

Sherman will be running off half back to replace Harbrow's line breaking role and I would expect Gia to take on the captaincy role in the midfield - it will be about time we get some composure back in there i.e. Boyd needs to get back to what he does best which is extracting the ball and being accountable for his opponent.

I think Jones would be awesome on the wing this year, has good pace about him and provides that easy target out of defense which we clearly stuggled with last season.

Re: Round 1 2011 Team

we really are having withdrawal, but for what is worth

Wood, Lake Morris
Hargraves, Williams, Gilbee
Griffen, Boyd, Sherman
Murphy, Grant, Higgins
Jones, Hall, Gia

Hudson, Cooney, Ward

i/c: Roughead, Cross, Picken SUB: Djekurra
Emergencies: Addison, Reid, Moles, Hooper, Liberatore, Wallis, Vespremi, Hahn, Cordy, (Hill, Minson - if not traded)

List of 33 to choose from

others: Bouman, Howard, Tutt, Prado, Thorne

Observation: List looks really strong, an elite established defence, a deep midfield with loads of up an comers and loads of young talent pushing for selection up forward.

Key weakness: injuries could really expose us in the key defensive posts. Really should have grabbed faulks ahead of Fremantle. Hopefully Bouman can show some improvement.

Re: Round 1 2011 Team

Wood Lake Morris
Gilbee Williams Murphy
Sherman Cross Griffen
Vezspremi Jones Djerkurra
Grant Hall Giansiracusa
Hudson Cross Cooney
Picken Higgins Roughead Ward

Emergencies: Addison Reid Wallis

Moles Howard Tutt Liberatore Hooper
Cordy Minson Hargrave Panos Boumann Tiller

May as well start all three of the new players. Sherman is an instant starter, and I'd give the other two a run too. Or at least I'd give them the preseason and the NAB cup in the side to let them earn it. Djerkurra in particular has been brought to the club as he brings something to the club we're sorely lacking in - forward pressure.

No Hargrave or Minson, they function as our covers. There will be times we'll rest Roughead or Hudson and play Minson instead. 2011 is going to be gruelling for ruckmen as the new rules kick in, Hudson is in his twilight, and Roughead is only learning.

I struggle to see Jones holding his place, especially considering Roughead could ruck 30% and spend the rest of the time in the forward line, but I rate him and I don't think we lose anything by giving him first crack. I'd expect Addison, Reid, and Wallis in particular to be pushing for places. We could easily go in with one less tall, or play Hargrave for defensive cover instead of Jones. I can't really remember the last time we played three tall forwards.

One plus is that Jones works hard off the ball. Grant can be lazy as shit or switched on, you only need to see how hard he worked at stages against Sydney and St Kilda. Jones, Grant, and Djerkurra could really scare some defenses.

All in all, I see our 22 as better than this year. Two areas of constant annoyance for me in 2010 were defensive pressure in the forward line and run and pace from the back half. I hate to say it but Johnson (and Akermanis) were liabilities as was Hahn. Our forward line looks quicker, more mobile, and more capable defensively. It's a marked improvement IMO. If Vezspremi and Higgins can step up and provide us with other avenues to goal, we're a better side again.

Sherman is a slight improvement on Eagleton. Missing Harbrow will hurt seeing he was a lone counterattacking hand at times, but it's nothing we can't cover. Wood, Gilbee, and Murphy can all create and attack, and maybe Sherman will get a run down there, Ward could be played off a half back flank, or maybe we'll recruit the Poulpos (sp?) guy from Norwood who'll turn into a ready made Harbrow replacement.

I think we need to give them a go first up, other wise what was the point of trading for them. All three address a need, so why not give them a go and see what they can do. I agree with Reid though, i'm a massive fan, but he's fighting for a position with the like of Cross and Boyd. We can't have too many inside mids with average pace in the side!

Sherman and Veszpremi will be definate starters in round 1. Traded players are usually given that opportunity. I cant see Djerkurra starting, but will have a lot of nab cup time. Mainly due to his inexperience.

I think Gia will be playing half forward this year, with the addition of Veszpremi/Djerkurra. We all saw how well he played in the midfield at the start of this year, and if given that opportunity permanently, will have a much better year. He is one of, if not our best finisher, and will excell at getting the ball I50.

Higgins to be FP all year. He doesnt seem to have the tank for midfield, and he has pretty good kicking skills. A good shot at goal too. Get his confidence up close to goals, and if it improves a lot, push him up the ground more, gradually of course.

Roughead will play all year I hope. He has the ability to play forward, as well as ruck, which will help him a lot with the new sub rule. Seemed to have a bit of the yips in front of goal this year, but im sure now with the experience, that will improve.

My god our team looks good on paper :thumbsu:

Absolutely agree on your Higgins comments. He is a natural forward, and is yet to convince me he has the tank to go further up the field. Great lead, good hands and a straight kick. Perfect forward pocket player.

A bit of a shame to Pidgeon hole a player with such exquisite skills as such, but I think it may be the case.

Higgins was sick most of the year wasn't he? Thought reports of him over preseason last year had him ready to move into midfield then he got sick/did ankle on the Etihad surface.

A free run at it this year and I'd expect him to be part of the midfield rotations.

I remember walking away from the intra-club match last year thinking he was going to win the Brownlow playing in the guts all season. Absolutely tore the game apart. Not sure if he went downhill after that or everyone else came up to scratch, he may have just been fitter than everyone else at that stage of the preseason.

Re: Round 1 2011 Team

As it stands this is mere speculation.

The team for round 1 or indeed the best 22 for 2011 will be determined by the pre-season efforts and ongoing fitness as well as the final available list.

Surely almost everyone on the list will be entitled to consider themselves a chance when fit.

What if Boumann, or some other unlikely candidate, tears it apart in the pre-season, would he be entitled to get a game in round 1.

Remember in 2008 Josh Hill was nowhere, but got a game round 1 because of his performance in the pre-season games.

For 2011 I would be hoping that Ward is right to go and take his rightful spot as a top midfielder. I would also be looking for Higgins to have an impact, but he needs to get right and be part of the rotation as well.

We'll just have to wait and see. Best/most effective games I've seen him play have all been deep in the forward line. Happy to be mistaken though...

more flankers that supposedly push into the midfield for a few minutes per game...awesome

Our lack of pace and run & carry killed us this year and we have tried to rectify that problem. You guys were in a similiar boat last year and chased hard for Lovett & Peake... Going on how badily that turned out for you we shouldn't have bothered.

Re: Round 1 2011 Team

Jamason Daniels will have a super pre-season and be named as an emergency in round one, before breaking into the side early in the year. His pace will be more than handy.

Are you serious? Will be surprised if he's on the list next year, played most of the year at Williamstown seconds.

Re: Round 1 2011 Team

Bud of mine helps cover the dogs for afl.com and went to plenty of doggies pre-season sessions last year....higgins was flying. Not far behind Boyd and cross for endurance. His illness screwed his season. I'm happy for everyone to underestimate him going into next season. He's a genuine A grader who will rotate thru midfield and half forwar along with cooney, Gia, Sherman etc....

Love Reid too. Hope he sees some action next year.

Wallis to start at half back. Serious pressure on gilbee and shaggy for spots next year which is exactly what we need...

Wood lake Morris
Murphy Williams wallis
griffen Boyd Sherman
higgins jones Gia
vez hall grant
Hudson cooney picken

roughie cross ward

How does Veszpremi get a walk up start. He played 1 game for Sydney. he has plenty of work to do to get a start. Hargrave and Addison must be in front of him until we see how they get through pre-season.

I do like the addition of Sherman.

After the poor season that Hargrave put in this year and his terrible kicking to players manned up, plus his sometimes foolish free kicks, I would hope that we have a better option in the team.

Sorry, I feel he is exactly the type of player that will not get us to the ultimate prize.

gee howard has jumped a lot of places there on the back of what ?
Think he only got in the best players once at Willi last year.

I would be pleased to see him make his debut this year let alone be a starting emergency.

Also consider Eades thoughts on the Sub.....
I think we will go into alot of games with only one ruckman this year and have Williams run in the ruck like he did towards the end of this season. Will and Roughy may both find themselves down at willi.
