21 years old with games under his belt, he should be easily on the edge of regular time.
He is only age 20. Anyway he is a KPF who will be entering just his second year. I agree he is an exciting young prospect, however, I would have Close, Staker, McStay and McGuane ahead of him for a spot when all fully fit and firing. Give the young bloke time to develop in the reserves. He still has a lot of weaknesses.

Hey mate, don't mean to intrude here, but just curious why you haven't included Jackson Paine in that list?
Did he struggle in the NEAFL last year?

Played mostly forward in the NEAFL. He had weeks where he'd bag five goals and others where he'd struggle to score. Played a few games in defence I believe as well.

Seriously struggled in the seniors. Subbed off twice due to lack of impact and faced guys like Dustin Fletcher, Lachie Hansen and Jack Hombsch who were too strong for him.

I don't see him competing so much with Freeman for a sport. I see his role as more of a 3rd tall forward.

Thanks guys.

Showed plenty of promise early for us, shame to see he's struggling to go on with it.

No clear winner in this trade yet, though Paine just in front based on Karnezis not getting a single game. :D

Paine was never quite right physically last year, but by all reports he has emerged as a fantastic runner this pre-season and could be a bit of a dark horse for selection early. And with most of our taller forwards having question marks over there heads it could be anyone lining up in the first round.

He's apparently been running with the first group this preseason and that group is ridiculously fit. Fitness-wise, that puts him ahead of blokes like Beams, Hanley, Rockliff, Redden and Rich.

If he's able to keep that company you can assume he's currently aerobically fitter that he's ever been.

So assuming he's been told to get fitter, it would appear he's earmarked for a more mobile role. Maybe a shot at the Patfull role?

There's a queue for it though, so he'll need to fight.

Great news for the kid, it sounds like he's giving him self every chance to make it.

I wish him luck.

My team - Round 1

B:
Darcy Gardiner, Daniel Merrett, Ryan Harwood
HB: Jed Adcock, Justin Clarke, Daniel Rich
C: James Aish, Dayne Beams, Pearce Hanley
HF: Sam Mayes, Daniel McStay, Dayne Zorko
F: Josh Green, Michael Close, Stefan Martin
R: Matthew Leuenberger, Tom Rockliff, Jack Redden
I/C: Mitch Robinson, Lewis Taylor, Allen Christensen
Sub: Rohan Bewick

Em: (from) Brent Staker, Tom Cutler, Luke McGuane, Marco Paparone, Jonathan Freeman

Just about perfect line up, but I'd replace Merrett with Matt Maguire

I'd rather replace Harwood with Goose and see how that goes, understandably that leaves us having a fairly tall backline although I think it maybe more beneficial in the long run.
Obviously it's subject to modifications against specific teams.

who will tag Nathan Freeman in round 1? Rockliff or Zorko? but seriously your midfield looks incredible.you will have to have an incredibly incompetent forward and back line to lose given the clearance numbers and class using the ball versus Pendles and the 7 dwarfs.

Are you trying to say we'll have a great midfield but because of our shit forward and defence we'll lose to Pendlebury and his awesomely better team?

Maybe, but Pendlebury, Swan and Sidebottom are an elite trio and proven big game performers. It will be a big game and we will need to play well, seasons of late we've been very slow starters early in the season. I think it'll be a pretty close result.

What I meant was your midfield is way better than ours and I can only see Collingwood winning if lions miss a lot of chances up forward or Collingwood are incredibly accurate, which they never are.
last time the lions went into the season with this much hype we got flogged in round 1 by the Western Bulldogs. This game could go either way and could be a big loss for either team imo.

But what would you do if you were trying to field a team full of thinning red-heads?
I've got a couple of mates who could held make up the numbers.

Yeah, I think our backline is generally solid, unless a Cloke or an Elliot pulls a blinder out and kicks 5 or 6. It happens sometimes. Patfull is a loss of smarts more than anything else, so defence may be dumber but more athletic.

You'd expect the midfield will be better 6 weeks into the season when they've played together a bit more, so a settled opposition midfield -- even a settled mediocre one like a Carlton -- might do well against them early in the season.

But the pies midfield is in pretty much the same position -- new blokes in new roles and better when they've had time to gel.

The lion's key forwards are a big question mark -- all kids and journeymen at the minute. Don't think we could rely on any significant scoring pressure there -- but they'd need to be able to compete enough to not giveaway clear turnovers. Pretty sure we're going to be piecing together scores all year from midfielders and flankers grabbing 2s and 3s.
