The biggest dilemma facing Brisbane this season will be how they go about their ruck set-up. It seems to me that Martin plays better when he's given the job as the number one ruck. Will be interesting to see how he goes now with a full season alongside Leuenberger. With Leuenberger in the side it means that Martin can push forward more often and become another target inside 50.

I think this is what some people forget when they look at our forward stocks. It'll be very handy to have one of Martin and Leuy pushing forward at times to present another option to free u[p Freeman and Close and also hopefully to exploit some matchups up forward. When Leuy is fit and healthy he can take a nice grab and is usually pretty accurate. If Martin is in as good a form as he was last season we'll have the freedom to send Leuy up forward without worry.

Both tend to perform better when they are the sole rucks. Round 23 probably gives us the best idea of how they will work together and in that game when he wasn't rucking Martin was given a free running role and was not stuck up forward. Given the combination worked very well in that game I would expect that to continue.

I'm less interested in how the individual/s perform and more interested in how the team goes. Maybe Leuey/Martin won't play at their absolute best but if we can really wear opposition ruckmen down, that has to be a positive going late into games.

And its pretty clear that to win games we need virtually the entire team on its game. We don't have any real match winners at present. As long as they all do their bit we will be in with a chance in more games than last year.

The thing is, Martin's actual ruck work is far from spectacular. It's what he does around the ground and in the contest with his athleticism and size that is unique. If he gets a role where he can run around and make a nuisance of himself, I'm confident he'll perform strongly, whether he's rucking or not. Leuenberger probably needs a fair bit of time in the ruck to exert an influence on the game.

Both of them need to work hard on their forward play though. If we can have a third reasonably dangerous 195cm+ player in the forward line (the other two ideally being Close and Staker imo) then it's a massive bonus. That's as well as McStay, Mayes and resting midfielders spending some time up forward. Add in our plethora of smalls and our forward line could be better than expected this season.

Yeah his stoppage ruck work is sublime he doesn't have to jump over his opponents but it's more a strength battle. It's his centre bounces were he has trouble and it is the only glaring weakness he has from his ruck work. As soon as the ball hits the ground I'd think he would beat his direct opponent 7.5 times out of 10.

I reckon its about 75%!

I am of the mindset that it will be better and quite surprising. One thing that we all know is that with strong delivery from midfielders, we'll always have more marks/goals in the forward 50. I think our forwards are accurite in front of goals, and with added experience and age/muscle, we'll impact the scoreboard a lot better. Maybe not to the extent of a premiership quality team, but certainly impact it nonetheless.

LF: A. Christensen CHF: M. Close RF: S. Mayes
LP: J. Green FF: B. Staker/J. Freeman RP: S. Martin/Luey

I'd feel pretty confident going into season 2015 with that lineup and feel it will have the ability do do a lot better than we're expecting.

One thing we know for sure is that we have many options that we can try across the ground, midfielders and tall runners, not to mention small as well. We won't be as predictable as times gone by and that is nothing but a positive

Unless he's in the goal square, I'm not sure of Martin's value as a forward. Leuey is a better kick for goal ...

In any case, I think it's an awesome problem that we have.

Also - isn't 0.5 of a win a draw?

For what it's worth I see Martins' value as a forward to be a big body taking a big defender and crashing packs to help the younger guys out.
