Unless you've got someone like Sandilands, the days of whacking a ruckman in the goalsquare and getting him to stick his hands up and mark the ball are gone. I'd have though the fact he get goals from marks on the lead is a good thing.
And marks are only one part of the equation. It is also about creating secondary opportunities for your crumbers.

TFB, you might remember from that player sponsors night that a KPI the club measured was contests won, drawn and lost. The impression that I got was that, while winning the contest is the ultimate aim, splitting the contest with your opponent is not a bad thing. A key forward can do their job by creating a contest which leads to a scoring shot or a forward 50 stoppage. The cardinal sin is letting your opponent win the footy which exposes your side to a rebounding opportunity.

Inside 50 marking is also comparatively rare these days. Last year, only 5 players averaged 3+ marks inside 50 per game and no-one averaged more than 4. It seems to me that the modern game requires a contest from forwards, first and foremost.

Further to that, the difficulty with ruckmen like Leuenberger in the forwardline is that it's harder for them to get to contests at all. For every centimetre above 200 you're likely to give up a disproportionate amount of agility, and typically someone who's played most of their career in the ruck won't have the same natural forward instincts.

With adcock no longer captain I am almost inclined to have cutler or c.beams in ahead of him
The inexperience watch thread makes me shy away from this idea. And with the loss of Patfullllllllll I'd say we will need the experience down there for a little while yet.

Although I would love to see Cutler play a lot more

Certainly early last year Adcock didnt seem clean with the ball, either pick up or disposal, but he did improve through the year. Dont know if he was carrying some niggles early (thumb or finger maybe).

I just feel like leppa is really pushing the youth through. To be honest I would be surprised if staker or McGuane get games ahead of close or freeman. Let's be honest none of staker, adcock, Maguire, merret etc will be part of our next premiership team

No but as seen in the inexperience watch (and Melbourne, GWS and co) you cant just go all youth. You have to transition them into the team with experienced bodies (and heads) around them. Those guys may or may not be part of our next premiership, but none of the young guys will be either if we don't develop them correctly

Good point don't wanna end up like melbourne

Worth remembering that Adcock is only 29. He doesn't turn 30 until November. Hardly over the hill in age and, from what I've seen over the past few years, I don't think he's struggling with the physical demands of the game.

I think his form would need to drop for him to lose his place in the side. If he plays to the same level as the last couple of years, I think he'll retain a spot.

Disagree about Staker, might be old chronologically but not a lot of miles on the clock. Missed a few years he could go a few years more. If he can get to 2017 he can be part of a premiership side.

He will be what 33-34? He hasn't exactly shown hes capable of Alistair Lynch style longevity

Billy with age you will realise that 33-34 is not that old. Staker is a very good athlete, he could make it. Lynch went to 36-37?

To be fair though, in the realm of AFL footballers, 33/34 is getting pretty old.
Getting old for guys who have career continuity, but Staker has had a lot of time off. Harvey is 38 this year, Fletcher 39 or 40, there is not physical reason you cant go that long (if fit), a lot of guys retire because they mentally cant face the challenge anymore/have other things to do in life. Stakes is an excellent athlete and if he has a good year, injury free, could go on for a while. Pav is 34 this year, Lynch went on for a long time and was similar in that he missed a middle part of his career.

Hanley's likely absence for the first month or so of footy creates an opportunity for one of the fringe players. As a wing/onball type, guys like Paparone, CBeams, Lester or Bewick come into the mix.
I think Bewick might get the first chance if he's not already in the team. His game against the Western Bulldogs was pretty good in a similar role.

I could see Mayes getting bumped up into that role as well, with a position opening up whereever Leppa was looking to start him.

B: Maguire Merrett Adcock
HB: Gardiner Clarke Rich
C: Hanley D.Beams Aish
HF: Paparone Staker Zorko
F: Mayes Close Green
R: Leuenberger Rockliff Redden
Interchange: Martin Christensen Robinson
Sub: Taylor
Emergencies: Bewick C.Beams Harwood
With Hanley out injured for the first month of the season, I would move Bewick into the 22 line up.
