hey lions
just a curious blue, wanting to know how robbo is tracking and fitting in at new club. Hope he goes well for you guys and has a great year.

He's fitting in extremely well, training really well also. It seems like getting out of the focus of the media in Melbourne has really helped him. Check out his Roster Watch thread for more information.

From all reports has fitted in nicely. Got his diet and training habits right and is in really good nick. Ive always rated robbo for his hard work and brutal attack. Cant wait to see him run out there round 1.

Not a big fan of Lester replacing patfull. Would rather a bonafide 3rd defender than a midfielder going their.
wouldn't think Lester has the tank to do the job, or the intercept marking ability.

IMO, l would rather Cutler get the job.
My concern on Lester is whether his disposal is good enough under pressure.

I would like to see Cutler back there too, but more as the running half back with good disposal than that floating intercepting back.

IIRC Lester was recruited as an athletic key defender with potential to develop into an on baller. I would prefer to see another mature body in the back six rather than a kid with potential. Giving Lester ten weeks to settle into the third tall spot appears sensible, particularly as he seems to be developing the tank required to play out a full game. I too am a bit worried about his disposal (though statistics indicate his disposal efficiency isn't that bad). I am hoping his improved fitness will allow him to get the separation necessary to better use the ball. He has all the tools to be a slightly lesser version of Joel (including premature bolding if recent training photos are any indication).

I posted something similar in the pre season thread but I actually rate Lester and there's no reason why he can't be as good as Patfull, if not better. He's got the right tools just needs the experience. I wonder if that means Gardiner will be pushed out.

If we are pushing Gardiner out for Lester, then that is ridiculous by the lions. However, l doubt they would leave him out, very quickly becoming an integral part of our defence.

Leppa likes a tall defence. Might see Merrett, Clarke, Maguire, Gardiner, Lester and McStay all play down there.

If Lester gets first crack then I imagine it will be a similar structure to last year with Merrett or Maguire, Clarke, Gardiner and Lester, plus two small defs in Adcock and one of Rich, Harwood or even Claye?

If Lester is going to play the intercepting marker he's going to have to start standing up straight. One of the shortest looking tall guys I've ever seen! Also while his disposal hasn't been super over the years looking at stats alone is going to be deceiving given he has played the role of a young developing inside mid over the past few years which is never going to be the haven of high disposal %.

I've got no issue giving him first crack at the role in front of Cutler. He's had a few years longer in the system and would more likely be further developed in his understanding and adherence to defensive structures.

Based on recent reports and what I have witnessed at training, round one is looking to be

Lester Maguire Gardiner
Adcock Merrett C.Beams
Mayes D.Beams Rich
Zorko Martin Robinson
Green Staker McGuane

Leuey Rockliff Redden

McStay Aish Taylor Christensen
