Worrell replaces Dawson which fress Dawson up to play wing where he is a lot more damaging.

If you look at our structure - It doesn't work like that.

In 2022 - we played 7 defenders rotating through the 6 starting spots.

2 small defenders - Parnell/Brown & Jones
2 Lock down talls - Murray Butts
1 3rd tall - Doedee or Worrell.
2 - rebounding defenders - smith/dawson/hinge

Unfortunately - Worrell isn't a HBF/Winger like Smith/Dawson/Hinge. He is a 3rd tall.

I don't think Doedee had a good year in 2022, he looked to be injured and often was playing against KPD's which didn't end well. Whilst I'm not a big fan of Butts and to a lesser Murray, unfortunately they are all we have as KPD's. The club has not done a good job in drafting and recruitment in this area.

He never played against KPD's. Every game he played - he either 2 of Butts/Murray/Frampton assigned to the opposition 2nd forward.

If we play only one intercepter I think Worrell is the better long term prospect and I wouldn't be overpaying for Doedee on a long term deal. I also think we could play Worrell on the wing along with Dawson if we had too many talls down back. Some height and damaging long term kicks on the wings would be interesting to see.

Worrell is perfect for the 3rd tall. IMO - his development over the preseason goes a long way to deciding which one of Murray and Doedee should play.

If the opposition have 2 genuine tall forwards, we need to play both Butts & Murray. If they only have 1, we can get by resting one of our key defenders.

I would be going with the Geelong model of a taller defence with Butts, Murray, Worrell & Doedee as part of our back 7, except where the opposition have only 1 key forward.

IMO - Geelong have that better balance. They carry 3 tall defenders - SDK - 204cm, Kolo 193cm, Henry 192cm who are all defenders first. Stewart is the key piece because at 190cm he can defend big or small and is the key driver for them off half back.

For comparisons sake - Butts/Murray = SDK/Kolo. The issue is that Doedee isn't good enough offensively to be the Stewart in this equation. He also isn't big enough to defend talls.

If we are to carry all 4 (butts/murray/Doedee/Worrell) we would need to structure up where Doedee becomes the lock down small defender and Worrell is the intercept 3rd tall so that we can have a more offensive player alongside Smith in the defensive 50.

Update based on training reports

B Parnell - Butts - Doedee
HB Worrell - Murray - Smith
C Dawson - Berry - Soligo
HF Rankine - Walker - Schoenberg
F McAdam - Fogarty - Thilthorpe
R O'Brien - Pedlar - Rachele

I Laird - Keays - Milera - Hinge
S Taylor

IN: Keays, Milera
OUT: Taylor (to sub), Cook

With reports of Milera playing defense I'm happy to bring him into my best 22 in that role. I'd prefer him over Jones, while Hamill would be close to selection

Cook has been a bit of a disappointment so far, so I should probably swap him for Keays playing half forward

Taylor relegated to the sub role

In that team ... excited to see the progression of:
  1. Rankine
  2. Fogarty
  3. Rachele
  4. Pedlar
  5. Soligo
  6. Thilthorpe
  7. Worrell
  8. Berry
  9. Parnell
  10. Milera
Should be a significant change to how we play.

ROB- Berry - Schoenberg -
Keays - Hinge - Murray - Hamill
I like it, but Parnell for Jones, Hinge on to the wing and Soligo on the bench for midfield rotations. Also reckon Murray starts and Worrell bench.

Have you told Sloane he’s not playing? ;)

Nice list... but I would slot Schoenberg into around 8th.

Changing my expected team due to injury interruptions and training reports … this isn’t what I would do but what I think will happen

Can’t see Worrell playing after 2 hamstring injuries in pre season so far , it’s a shame but hope he comes in early in season

Can’t see McAdam or Taylor playing given pre season reports re fitness and / or injuries

Sloane …. I just hope they don’t rush to play him round 1 , give him 12 months then play him forward and see how he goes

The coaches and players love McHenry - he’s playing even though I wouldn’t pick him myself

Rankine is very fit so they might play him wing and get his class around the ball and free him up a bit and it allows them to pick their boy McHenry

Forwards - Fog TT Rachele

Half forwards - Soligo Tex McHenry

Centres - Hinge Laird Rankine

Half backs - Smith Murray Dawson

Backs - Parnell Butts Doedee

1R ROB Berry Keays

IC Schoenberg Pedlar Michaelanny Milera
Sub Jones

Centre square mid minutes
***Laird
***Berry
**Keays
**Schoenberg
**Soligo
*Rachele
*Rankine

If I’m picking team myself Mchenry isn’t in it and I’d start Rankine forward and Dawson wing ( also going into centre square at times ) Michaelanny starts at half back … Jones or Murphy ( don’t laugh) in for McHenry and the other sub

Think it will look like this

B: Doedee Butts Smith
HB: Dawson Murray Milera

C: Soligo Keays Hinge
R: RoB Laird Berry

HF: Rankine Fog Pedlar
F: Thilt Walker Rachele

I: Hamill Jones McHenry Shoenberg
Sub: Sholl

Don't rate Shoenberg at all, disposal + fitness not up to it. We're short a good mid prospect. Don't mind Keays midfield if he can recapture early season form, anything else then he should be moved to HF, too many turnovers. Dawson should rotate on a wing as much as possible. Worrell comes in when fit.

I hope we settle our line up early, every week we chopped and changed last year. Leave Hinge on a wing rather than rotate Hately/MCrouch on there.
