Review Round 1, 2024 vs West Coast

This WILL become an issue in the future just like concussion has, especially as record high temperatures and unseasonal humidity continue to creep into autumn.

Adelaide's heat is way more humid than it used to be and February Dragon has resettled into March.

Didn’t get to the game as I had some I had to do , just finished the replay .
I thought we were reasonably impressive, some ball movement really good , mostly good field kicking . Ken’s goal kicking was terrible though , really should’ve won by a fair bit more although the Eagles did have some occasional good passages of play and they were fairly intense which we were too , a few players on the edge but I don’t see too many changes .
Good to see Soldo fit in well , Ratogalea was quite good too and BZT so looking like the recruiting might prove to be good .
Meady was quite good , the was quite a bit of leading from the forwards , who dined out really they just couldn’t make it pay with the goal kicking.
Loved Butters run , and JHF who is one that is a good set shot .
Dixon was good early , Drew was excellent, Rozee a typical industrious game , Houston , Allir , Burton , there was plenty of winners .
Overall a bit like a final trial but we did well and not much on the injury front .
Give it a 7.5

Sunburned.
For those not yet aware- the St John's volunteers hand out free sunscreen to spectators at Adelaide Oval games. For those in the eastern stand they have a room in the corridor that lies just to the side of the Port merchandise stall about 30 metres north of the McIntosh bar. A big container of sunscreen placed on a table.

And a call out to eastern stand beer can bars for giving out free cups of water. Would be good if they gave out free ice as well but one step at a time.

Reckon there will be around 20k of people calling in for heatstroke sickies tomorrow.
I remember getting a one day sick leave claim for sunburn rejected in the 90s because it was self inflicted.

Assume attending a footy game staring west as the sun tracked across your face would get similar sympathy.

On the theme of #marginalgains:

Last year, Port scored 109 points from 59 inside 50s and conceded 69 points from 48 inside 50s.

This year, Port scored 120 points from 57 inside 50s but conceded 70 points from just 40 inside 50s.

The reduction in inside 50s is good. So our team defence has improved. However, we're still weak against those slingshot teams. Our defence should have held them to 58 points.

I'm giving them a pass because it was ****ing hot and I wouldn't want to defend hard in those conditions.

Yeah except that atmosphere is now the norm at our games. There's zero anticipation or excitement for the season, go back 6, 7 years ago and there's be a lot more crowd noise and buzz even against west Coast or someone s**t because people were looking forward with excitement to the season.

Our match day is so stale. Today was dead quiet, my kids could hear the players yelling from the scoreboard pocket from up in the Western stand. There's absolutely nothing to look forward to, playing the same game plan against the shittest team for round 1 in the heat was about as exciting as paint drying for most there it seemed.

The pre-match vibe in the first few years at Adelaide Oval was absolutely jumping. You’d make a point of getting in there early just to drink it in. Honestly now, it resembles a morgue. There appears to be very little excitement or palpable tension about the game ahead. Unfortunately, that’s the year we’ve got ahead of us. Hard to get excited for any home and away contest other than the showdown, because ultimately we all know that it means nothing until we prove ourselves in finals.

Yeah that was ****ing hot. Top of the riverbank stand was like a sauna. No airflow at all and just sweating like crazy. At least I wasn't in the sun though i guess.

Was just a typical Port home game against a poor opponent really. Won by 50, should have won by 30 more if not for some horrific kicking at goal. One day, we'll kick 31.9 or something and really punish an opponent. Maybe. Maybe not in my time left on earth.

Our mids really dominated. Rozee was best on, just blistering, direct football. JHF carried on front last year, probably gets a brownlow vote here too. Butters was good, but not at his best. Soldo made a world of difference. Good tapwork, good around the ground and I love that he's a goalscoring threat up forward.

Rat and Zerk did a great job on Allen and Darling. Zerk had a couple of poor moments with the ball but thought defensively he was sound. He definitely appeared to be pushing further up the ground than what he did for Essendon as well. Rat was solid as a rock. Allowed AA to float around a bit more. Really hope these three stay fit all year.

Drew was really good, loved Farrells two long bombs, Houston picked up where he left off last year. Dixon had a monster start to the game but didnt appear much after hurting his arm. Thought Marshall played well except for his attempts at goal. Finlayson just needs to go back to the SANFL and relearn how to kick a football.

Really liked Meads cameo's in the midfield. Hopefully he continues to improve with some more faith in him. Mcentee, well, the well may have run dry there. Just didnt do anything at all.

Hey! Anyone can lie on the beach under a shaded umbrella or take the poach for a walk in a leafy park on those types of days no worries.
But! Sitting in the sun for hours on end on a hard surface plastic.
Really….?
I would say about three quarters of the ground was permanently in the sun and by the way it was 34 degrees when I left in my car from War Memorial Drive. It was bloody hot!! (& add that dollop of humidity as well)

I mean the pre match hasnt changed in 10 seasons now. They definitely need to change it up, its stale.

Wonder if that boundary umpire will get a game next week
I think it was the bald headed boundary umpire that got so behind the play and as a local he’s been boundary umpiring for years at AO - basically from the start at AO. Perhaps not anymore? However why didn’t field umpire # 31 help out his colleague - scarred of some demarcation issues?

If I had a bald head and was umpiring in 30+ degree full sun I would wear a cap and a very decent pair of polarising sunglasses to help me focus on my job. It's just feckin common sense isn't it?

WTF is this not a requirement for the AFL? Not just for health and safety reasons but for decent officiating?

(I know this isn't likely to be an issue for that obvious missed OOB issue on the western side in today's game but as a general comment).

That made me laugh. First one called back. Second one even skinnier - play on.

Guess they were fecked in the heat too.

One of the centre bounces was so bad Soldo was going to catch it and give it back, the ump called play on and West Coast cleared and I think scored from it.

Imagine if SPP does that this year

I want to see what happens if SPP gives Rowell the 360 degree tackle with a body slam that was called holding the ball for the crows.

As you alluded at the end, a couple of those slingshot moves we just gave it to them because we were so far in front and figured we would get the goal back.

A very few years ago I think Jim Stynes was reported for wearing a cap on a blistering hot day in Melbourne. A big fuss was made by the VFL or it could have been the AFL regarding Jim doing the sensible thing. It was not a “professional look” was their excuse.
Fester I agree with every thing you say.
