Sunburned.Crowd?
This WILL become an issue in the future just like concussion has, especially as record high temperatures and unseasonal humidity continue to creep into autumn.
The family of an athlete who died from heat stroke sued organisers for millions. Lawsuits in Australia are ‘almost inevitable’
Sports that don’t protect their players from extreme heat could be sued for failing in their duty of care, in cases Australian sports lawyers are expecting to see in the near future.www.smh.com.au
Reckon there will be around 20k of people calling in for heatstroke sickies tomorrow.Adelaide's heat is way more humid than it used to be and February Dragon has resettled into March.
For those not yet aware- the St John's volunteers hand out free sunscreen to spectators at Adelaide Oval games. For those in the eastern stand they have a room in the corridor that lies just to the side of the Port merchandise stall about 30 metres north of the McIntosh bar. A big container of sunscreen placed on a table.Sunburned.
I remember getting a one day sick leave claim for sunburn rejected in the 90s because it was self inflicted.Reckon there will be around 20k of people calling in for heatstroke sickies tomorrow.
Yeah except that atmosphere is now the norm at our games. There's zero anticipation or excitement for the season, go back 6, 7 years ago and there's be a lot more crowd noise and buzz even against west Coast or someone s**t because people were looking forward with excitement to the season.
Our match day is so stale. Today was dead quiet, my kids could hear the players yelling from the scoreboard pocket from up in the Western stand. There's absolutely nothing to look forward to, playing the same game plan against the shittest team for round 1 in the heat was about as exciting as paint drying for most there it seemed.
I would say about three quarters of the ground was permanently in the sun and by the way it was 34 degrees when I left in my car from War Memorial Drive. It was bloody hot!! (& add that dollop of humidity as well)Hey! Anyone can lie on the beach under a shaded umbrella or take the poach for a walk in a leafy park on those types of days no worries.
But! Sitting in the sun for hours on end on a hard surface plastic.
Really….?
why is this taking them like 5 years to work out?Williams in, Jones out. Not a footballers arseh*le.
The pre-match vibe in the first few years at Adelaide Oval was absolutely jumping. You’d make a point of getting in there early just to drink it in. Honestly now, it resembles a morgue. There appears to be very little excitement or palpable tension about the game ahead. Unfortunately, that’s the year we’ve got ahead of us. Hard to get excited for any home and away contest other than the showdown, because ultimately we all know that it means nothing until we prove ourselves in finals.
I think it was the bald headed boundary umpire that got so behind the play and as a local he’s been boundary umpiring for years at AO - basically from the start at AO. Perhaps not anymore? However why didn’t field umpire # 31 help out his colleague - scarred of some demarcation issues?Wonder if that boundary umpire will get a game next week
If I had a bald head and was umpiring in 30+ degree full sun I would wear a cap and a very decent pair of polarising sunglasses to help me focus on my job. It's just feckin common sense isn't it?I think it was the bald headed boundary umpire that got so behind the play and as a local he’s been boundary umpiring for years at AO - basically from the start at AO. How were the shallow throw-ins too.Wonder if that boundary umpire will get a game next week
Imagine if SPP does that this yearSo someone said, but even so McGovern swung an elbow at him and not a word from the umpire.
I love Schulz but he has is seriously struggling with concussion from what i have heard. Not sure if the relationship is that great.Get Jay Schulz in as goal kicking coach ASAP
That made me laugh. First one called back. Second one even skinnier - play on. We're talking mini league stuff here. How were the shallow throw-ins too.

Guess they were fecked in the heat too.

On the theme of #marginalgains:
Last year, Port scored 109 points from 59 inside 50s and conceded 69 points from 48 inside 50s.
This year, Port scored 120 points from 57 inside 50s but conceded 70 points from just 40 inside 50s.
The reduction in inside 50s is good. So our team defence has improved. However, we're still weak against those slingshot teams. Our defence should have held them to 58 points.
I'm giving them a pass because it was ******* hot and I wouldn't want to defend hard in those conditions.

A very few years ago I think Jim Stynes was reported for wearing a cap on a blistering hot day in Melbourne. A big fuss was made by the VFL or it could have been the AFL regarding Jim doing the sensible thing. It was not a “professional look” was their excuse. If I had a bald head and was umpiring in 30+ degree full sun I would wear a cap and a very decent pair of polarising sunglasses to help me focus on my job. WTF is this not a requirement for the AFL? Not just for health and safety reasons but for decent officiating?
(I know this isn't likely to be an issue for that obvious missed OOB issue on the western side in today's game but as a general comment).
