Toast Round 1 = Collingwood 136-45 Port Adelaide

I can only go on what I see week from week.

Last week I questioned why we had sacrificed our future for the present, why Schultz & Mccreary, why our gameplan or lack there of, why are we so slow, etc, etc. This week, no questions, everything makes sense.

What has changed? A bad loss then a good win. I'm thinking the right question is why the difference? To what extent was this the ground, the conditions, the opposition or us.

The usual inhouse attacks, "down with the naysayers this week", don't reveal anything. It is as ridiculous to argue this week is the norm, last week an aberration as it is to argue last week told us all we need to know. The best argument I can come up with for the difference is attitude, our backs were up this week. That, mixed with some untimely issues, is the best excuse I have for last year that explains our doubling down in terms of trades for this year.

Deep down I am not convinced. I see a team that is thereabouts. Potentially a finalist but not likely a grand finalist. I think we are still riding the back of the belief the 2023 team was the clear best team of the year, rather than the team for whom so many things came right throughout the year and on the day.

Call me a naysayer, call me a glass half empty, call me not a true supporter. If my faith won grand finals we'd have another half dozen in my lifetime. I'm hoping another half dozen matches will prove how true my nicname is.

I’d say making any sort of judgement on this year’s prospects based on a sample size of two is folly.

One small gripe - the scoreboard at the G last night was very slow to update scores (it felt like minutes) and sometimes got it wrong. When Membrey kicked his fourth, the scoreboard congratulated him on his third goal.

Also, the scores on the big screens are in a new graphic format - goals in big font and behinds in much smaller font - and at least one of the older fans near me (ahem) couldn’t read the behinds.

Another also, the scoreboard shows the time lapsed in quarters, but no longer the time of day.

Like I said a small gripe - but they’ve had six months to get this right and it’s gone backwards.

That and the screaming din through the speakers - announcing players by yelling like an auctioneer on the verge of a huge commission

Pressure & tackling was the difference between last week & this week.

We applied none in the game against the Giants.

He was everywhere last night. Absolute jet and what a user of the footy we have off HB....😍
Opposition supporters were trying to convince themselves we overpaid with a future 1st round pick and a couple of very replaceable (including a VFL player) for a reigning 2x AA.

They are now bleeding with the realisation this guy is an absolute jet.

but no longer the time of day
Noticed that too.
Also, not sure what the "misses" are in scores associated with each player?
Not a scoreboard thing, but one plus I noticed, the player who is subbed off has his number dulled so we now know instead of guessing.
PS: I know you can't see those numbers ;)

The misses were the first thing listed too!
Misses. Behinds. Goals. I think.

Write them a strongly worded letter.

I don’t know that it was specifically that. He does seem to accept that when Checkers or McStay are going for it his job is to get that second position. He’s a very unselfish player so he seems to go find space where others aren’t even when it’s unlikely the ball will get there. But as it turns out it gives him opportunities on the pocket or secondary kicks.

At some point in Q2 they switched Aliir from Checkers to Membrey but then guess what, Checkers and McStay started to get ascendency. This is the real benefit of the MMM against teams without two strong tall defenders, when one of them is on a hot streak it will mess with the opposition plan.
The other aspect to this is that all three of our big forwards can roam up the ground at various times.
If one goes up the ground at any time it still leaves TWO tall forwards inside F50, whereas previously we had only one (with apologies to big Coxy).
This means that our talls are less likely to be double teamed.
Last night Membrey was upfield quite a bit, which opened up space for Checkers and Big Dan, as well as Billy.
