Everybody will have Magner on the field.

If you don't I feel so sorry for you.

Many will, but some will have put their GWS rookies on the field for sub security reasons. You can raise question marks over whether Shiel, McDonald and Coniglio for example could've put up good scores, but at least you know they weren't subs and you don't have to guess who gets named Rd 1. With Magner, there was also an injury concern.

I have Magner on the field so I'm not complaining, but it wasn't exactly a lock and load situation.

For me it was lock & load. Same with Curnow last year.

Why don't people trust mature rookie guns coming off a good preseason?

It's a no brainer imo.

Magner got injured during the pre-season.

He also wasn't elevated until after the first lockout, iirc.

Magner on my bench :(

4 premiums in the midfield. It was a logical choice to start Coniglio and McDonald ahead of Magner and Shiel because of injury concerns. It was very silly to start Magner on the field actually. Last week he still seemed 50-50 for Rd1 and if he would play he'd be a likely chance at a green vest.

Not really silly to start Magner if you had an emergency mid covering him. I made Coniglio my mid emergency as I knew he was playing so if Magner didn't play I'd get Coniglio's score.

What if Magner wasn't even elevated?

The benefit of hindsight, as they say.

I can understand the merits behind that idea, but Magner was a big sub risk in my eyes one week ago if named. Didn't want to take that chance. But hindsight is a lovely thing I guess

Well I could have still traded him up until the Friday night lockout. He was named to start as a follower on Thursday though so I stuck with him.

He was named starting rover well before lockout.

Sub risk isn't an excuse.

I meant before the GWS game. You had a whole host of rookie-priced mids named, Magner was still having an injury concern and he wasn't even elevated yet. Can you blame someone for being cautious?

Lee Spurr is a mature age player and talked about for elevation, but this week Ross Lyon decided to elevate Clancee Pearce instead. If that had happened with Magner, then we'd have to scramble around for someone else. If you had a GWS rookie or two, well there's less you'd have to worry about.

Like I said, I have Magner, and he's on the field, but it wasn't a lock it in Eddie situation.

Of course I'm aware you could tinker with your team up until Friday.

Deary me, I considered you one of the smartest blokes on here...

Coniglio/Shiel/Magner/McDonald were all the stand-out rookie priced players. Regardless of some Round 1 doubts (Shiel/Magner) they seemed to be the 4 that will give you the best return in 6/7 weeks time. With 4 rookie spots up for grabs in my midfield, I selected them in my squad of 30 regardless of what would happen in Rd1. One week ago we simply didn't know about what Magner would be doing in Round 1, he could be racking it up, sitting on the bench with a vest or sitting in the grandstand, last two options by far appeared the most likely. With the 3 midfield Giant rookies locked into their positions for me last Saturday, I would be effectively forced to lock Magner into his postion as well. And at that stage he was a big sub risk, Shiel had big doubts for a red vest aswell, so hence I started Coniglio and McDonald over Shiel and Magner.

Magner = the new Barlow! think my 6th midfield is set for the year lol.

Rockliff captain is going alright so far, worried at 1/4 time, but he has looked dangerous in the forward line, need him to play more in the centre though.

Really, really hope my choice to go Heppell over Hanley/Adcock pays off, because that was my final decision before lockout .

Even before the GWS game he was a lock for me personally.

If you followed the Zebras you would know why ;)

Elaborate? ;)

But anyway, I think everyone agrees that if Magner was named, he was going to do relatively well (sub involvement notwithstanding). And I think if you didn't have Magner at all (whether on the bench or on the field) that you were taking a big risk - mature age midfielder with great scores in the pre-season, and then named Round 1 - you have to have him.

Pretty much Magner was the only thing stopping our VFL team from sucking even with all the Saints players in there. On the bottom of the pack every time and a very hard worker. Looked good in yellow and blue :p

I just think you need to take that risk every year looking for that Barlow type player.

Last year I went with Curnow and this year I went with Magner.

It's just something I think has been proven to work. The maturity really helps them find the footy.

Well I don't disagree. But sometimes the coaches don't see it that way and don't elevate them. Remember last year when we were hanging on Nick Lower being elevated by Harvs?

I do agree - mature age, midfielder, outstanding pre-season - you are a fool to not have him.

Everyone half decent has got magner. I'm not disputing that. I'm wondering how you started him on the field withs the GWS partial lockout it was a HUGE risk to start him on the field.

Lucky Rockliff has kicked 3 goals 2, cant see that happening every week. Spending alot of time forward lucky its against a bottom 3 side in the dees.

Golby not doing well.

My 6 midifleders could be set with Maggy on the field. I dont expect this every game, you dont kick 2 goals in the opening qtr every week and they are playing brisbane who i see as the 4th worst side.
