Pardon the intrusion, but what is the history or the cause of the apparent ill-feeling/ bad blood between NM/ Ess supporters, or is it a BF thing?
For us it is historical. Regardless of the upper class protestant versus the lower class catholic thing, Essendon repeatedly blocked North's entry into the VFL. Then in 1921 Essendon agreed to merge with North as they were without a ground. To speed things up all Norths players were urged to join Essendon. When they did Essendon reneged on the deal and kept the players. Then when we eventually were admitted into the VFL one condition was that we had to give up our recruiting grounds to them. So in short, they are a pack of campaigners.

Goes right back
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/North_Melbourne_Football_Club#Formative_years

A reason we were not initially included in the VFL
Essendon felt threatened by the proximity of North Melbourne

Then they screwed us
Despite being rejected from the VFL in both 1896 and 1907, North persisted in trying to gain admission into the League. On 30 June 1921, North told its players it would disband and try to gain entry to the VFL by the ‘back-door’. Essendon League Football Club had lost its playing ground at East Melbourne and had decided to acquire the North Melbourne Recreation Reserve as a new playing ground. North accepted their proposal in the idea that the clubs would amalgamate. All of North’s players were urged to join the Essendon League Club to help facilitate the amalgamation. The amalgamation was foiled when some members of the Essendon Committee launched a successful legal challenge. As a result the Essendon League Club moved instead to the Essendon Oval, replacing the ground's original occupants, Essendon Association.
North was now without a playing team and the Essendon Association Club was now without a ground, so as a matter of convenience the two clubs amalgamated so they could compete in the 1922 season. As it had after the merger with West Melbourne, North once again managed to avert its destruction.

One of the only things that goes further back than our hate of Essendon is our will to survive.

Thanks, did not know that.
I've always been told that we, Cat fans, are somewhat in debt to NM for exactly the opposite reasons. NM was instrumental in allowing or getting Geelong back in after they were out of action, ? War related.

And you re-pay us with The Hand of God moment and a 100+ points finals flogging? Ungrateful pricks!

We were preventing you from suffering the appalling defeat that we suffered the week after. Sometimes better to think "what if?" , rather than actually be there and suffer first hand. That WCE team was effectively a state team, and they were going to smash whoever they got. We were the lucky ones??

Yep, that is correct. And apart from the '94 prelim:mad:, there's always been a mutual respect and a cordial relationship between North and Geelong.

The 94 Prelim was played in excellent spirit, and was one of the all time great finals, and we got payback from NM , specially Carey, in 1997. And again in 98. And we "gave you" Doug Wade??

Gave? It was his decision to come when he could have stayed at Geelong.
He is quoted as saying that his time at North were the best years he had in footy.

And it was 96 when North spanked Geelong in the finals.

The year we finished 2nd to Saints on % only, got to play NM on a Sun pm, got smashed, had to go to Ade, just got pipped after a disallowed Colbert mark.
I was sure it was 97, but I 'm often wrong these days.
NM also smashed us in Ablett's last game, IIRC, ? 98.
I was not serious about Wade, just a sore point that he actually left.

The 94vprelim wasn't pesonal, we were just pissed off with the umpiring.

Most fair minded supporters respect thecway GFC go about their business on and off the field. Off field, geelong understand what footy is about, unlike a Collingwood. Onfield they have a development process unrivalled.

Don't forget, you've done ok out of North:cool:. Mooney, McGrath, Sholl, Tudor. We got Colby, Scott, Baker. Oh and not forgetting Iohn Mossop and Tim Bourke:oops:

John Worsfold really needs to do something about the way his players look, it's bordering on disgraceful at the moment.

Ash Smith, Chris Masten.... I mean fairdinkum, aren't they embarrassed?

You are both right. Nort smacked Geelong in 96 (Ablett's last game) on the way to the flag. 97 was a 7 and 2 upset on the back of a Carey special after he came back from a shoulder. Both games in the wet.

96 was a nice sunny day. Fruity kicked 7. It was payback for 94 for sure.

Not always

At the end of the Round 10 match between Geelong and North Melbourne at Kardinia Park, North Melbourne coach, 5'4"in (163 cm) Alan Killigrew was king-hit in the players race by an officially unidentified Geelong player. A brief brawl ensued, with Killigrew emerging with his face covered in blood. The VFL initiates an inquiry into the matter, involving the examination of 20 different witnesses. On 20 July the VFL announces that no charges will be laid against Geelong's 6'2"in (188 cm) Geoff Rosenow.

Well picked up HtB. IIRC,our coach was ''disabled'' and Rosenow was a Geelong cop. Could be wrong!

A young and inexperienced North had steamed home against the reigning premiers at Kardinia Park (round 10, 1964), kicking 5-7 in the final quarter, only to fall short by just 2 points. Coach Alan "Killa" Killigrew, a renowned mental case, was going spare in the players race when Geelong player Geoff Rosenow decked him. Albert Mantello and Allen Aylett then tore in to Rosenow and a brawl ensued with Rosenow getting belted. The police got involved and Killigrew, Mantello, Aylett and Rosenow (a serving copper) all found themselves up on assault charges. The matter was "resolved", as was the custom in that day, with the charges being dropped for Mantello and Aylett. Killegrew copped a 6 month bond for assault, and Rosenow saved his job by getting a 6 month good behavior bond for "having used insulting words".

Today this would be a saga that would take months to resolve and wind up with player and club fines in the hundreds of thousands of dollars.
