Mansell played pretty well in both practise matches.

Cumberland was pretty disappointing in his limited time he played.

Bolton, Cotchin and Martin aren’t providing defensive pressure. Having MRJ, Mansell and Graham is going to go a long way to slowing Saad and Docherty.

Martin, Bolton, Lynch will be enough in the artillery for scoring.

Our biggest difficulty will be slowing Cripps.

With the amount of high quality mids we have running through there, I'm not opposed to having Graham sit on Cripps. I know we don't tag but in round 1 last year he absolutely monstered us in the last quarter.

I may well be in the minority here, but I like the balance of this side. The so called 'questionable' players picked in Pickett, Graham, Short and Mansell, are in the team because of their different qualities / abilities they bring to the collective 23 man squad.
Pickett & Graham are both hard, tough as nails competitors, who don't shirk contests, lay heavy tackles and are endurance two way runners, Short is also an endurance two way runner with very good kicking skills when given time and space and when on song is regularly in the highest metres gained across the ground for the team and Mansell, give the kid a break, he is in the team to to play a specific role, which I would presume is to apply hard, physical pressure (chasing and tackling) to stop the Carlton runners off their half back line namely Saad and Docherty from setting up potential scoring chains further down the ground and or force a turnover because of applied pressure.
Rather than cast stones from glass towers, let's just see how things pan out, after all it is only Round 1 there is plenty of depth in this squad and other players pushing for spots in the 23 each week, will get opportunities as the season progresses.Short named on wing is good to see. Interesting emergency. Ross, Dow, Ryan Clarke. Players who had good practice matches.
So we've added Grimes Tarranto JH, old faithful Jack 'Pressure' Graham. And Mansell.
Miller kept his spot. Good. Ditto MRJ.
Short on a wing. Good. See how a different player goes there.
TT and JH In. Should win us the game.

A fit Dusty is the Cumberland medium tall. Cumberland is a good mark and long kick. I'm not convinced at dusty. I think we'll see Noah soon one way or the other

Dimma has to have a couple of wtf selection. Mansell is it. I thought his days at RFC were finished. Be great if he succeeds.
See how Short goes On the wing. Is Pickett going to midfield? Good.
Looks like good preseason form players got emergency spots.

Perhaps Cumberland has been carrying an injury. Didn't train last Thursday, had some time off prior to that as well. Didn't train yesterday when plenty of the others did (from a 20 min. training video). Of course Mansell is in for his pressure as Carlton win when their half backs get going, so in that respect I don't mind the selection. It won't last long you would think but good luck to him.

Let's hope that Cumberland gets to play through the midfield in the VFL, as being a permanent forward with Dusty, Bolton, Cotchin and Taranto rotating through there it doesn't leave much room. Jack Graham's spot is probably the one he would be going for pending no injuries, so he will need to get further up the ground. He was drafted as a mid/half forward so no reason that he should be confined to the deep forward role. He has the energy and aggression to play midfield or even up to the wing. It's a long season, he will have plenty of time.

Mansell didn't play in the practice match against the Dees.

They will get plenty of early cheap goals from frees and 50s like they have the past few years.

Let’s count the free kicks given to Curnow, JSOS and McKay versus Lynch, Jack and Dusty.

I’m predicting 7 x frees and 4-goals from it for the Blooooz versus 2 x frees and 1-goal for our blokes.

I'm a bit concerned with our tall defenders to be honest. Was happy to see Miller in there but I assumed that meant Ryan would be selected as the third tall/backup ruck. Makes me think they will play Grimes on either McKay or Curnow. I think we need to play Grimes as a medium tall, he's getting a bit older and think we need to allow him just to play a more natural role.

Put your cum out :(

fat bastard yes sir GIF

This same old selection shit at the start of the season like we’ve had many years before .
Playing blokes on reputation rather than form including those with injuries , it happens every ****ing year .
Graham , MRJ and even Jack are very lucky to be getting a game .
Whilst Dow seems the unlucky one again .

jarrod clarke should be in on form , was our best player both nibs

Not really.

Hopper isn’t a defensive stopper. He’s a quality decision maker with ball in hand. Can bash and crash. But mostly outside.

Most likely defensive stopper would be Pickett.
Hopper is not mostly outside. He is one of the best-contested ball winners and one-touch clearance players in the AFL. In 2021 he ranked fourth for stoppage clearances and ninth for total clearances in the league. While in 2019, he was sixth for total stoppage clearances and eighth for total contested possessions.

He is more than capable of beating Cripps head to head, not as a defensive stopper.

That would be the 1st Quarter statistics, what is your prediction for the entire game?
